January 19 Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Goalies: Tristan Jarry, Alex Nedeljkovic and Frederik Andersen

Goalies get the nod in hockey news this week with Tristan Jarry getting sent down, Alex Nedeljkovic breaking NHL records, and the return of Frederik Andersen.

It has been a wild week for goaltender news. Today I have some notable information for you to consider when bolstering your crease for this week and beyond. Strap yourselves in, because there hasn’t been this much media attention in the blue paint since the introduction of the Sean Averey rule.

Penguins Give Up on Jarry

Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins has been sent down to the AHL for a second time this season. What's worse, is for the second time this year he cleared waivers and has been relegated to the club’s AHL affiliate; the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Jarry has played 22 games this year with 21 starts, and only has eight wins, an .886 save percentage, and a 3.31 goals against average.

An absolutely frightening statistic Jarry has is how often he lets goals in early. This year he has allowed a goal on the first shot he faced six times, four goals on the second shot, two goals on the third shot, four goals on the fourth shot, and three goals on the fifth shot of the game. Jarry has only made it to the sixth shot without allowing a goal just six times this season

If you added this up and said my math was incorrect, well I’ve got worse news for you. That’s because Jarry, on more than one occasion, let in multiple goals in the first five shots of the game..

Look, I love Jarry. I rode him the previous two seasons (as well as Alexandar Georgiev) in my main fantasy league because of his starting workload, but sadly both have been nearly unplayable this year.

I think this is the final nail in the coffin for Jarry. At least Georgiev has some hope in San Jose with the Sharks who notoriously churn out great goaltending. Maybe he can refind himself in front of a young up and comer team there, but Jarry’s days in the NHL may have come to an end.

While Jarry did recover from his first stint in the AHL earlier this year and showed signs of recovery early on, this trend did not last and it appears as though General Manager Kyle Dubas has thrown in the towel on Jarry, which means you should too. Drop him, and never look back.

Ned Breaks Some Records

Staying on the Pens, let’s discuss Alex Nedeljkovic. On Friday against the Buffalo Sabres he became the first goaltender in NHL history to record two points. He scored a goal, and got an assist! Another fun fact is he is the only netminder to have a goal in the NHL, AHL and ECHL!

While these stats may not count towards anything in your fantasy league, you have to admit it’s pretty cool. It was a big night for Ned, because on the heels of Jarry getting put on waivers, Ned got the nod and brought home a much-needed win for the Penguins.

He faced 42 shots on goal, making 40 saves and only letting in two goals giving him a .952 save percentage for the night. This was a huge confidence booster for him, and the team.

On the season Ned has 19 starts, eight wins, and has an .890 save percentage and a 3.33 goals against average.

While these numbers aren’t great, he has a chance to steal the net in Pittsburgh, and at worst will be sharing a tandem role with Joel Blomqvist, but this seems unlikely. The Penguins sent Blomqvist down while Jarry was up, so with Jarry out of the picture, that leaves Nedeljkovic as their number one.

The Penguins are also right up against the salary cap, since Dubas signed Erik Karlsson as soon as he joined the team last year. It is also unlikely that any teams are interested in taking Jarry off of their hands, as he has cleared waivers twice already with zero claims.

With that information and the Penguins being stuck into the goalie situation they currently have, if you went the “zero goalie” strat, have any tendies on injured reserve, or have a hole to fill as a streamer, I would look to pick up Nedeljkovic for workload alone. He is poised to get the majority of starts, and face a ton of shots.

That said, he is unlikely to pick up a lot of wins, and with the weak defense core in front of him, he may also give up a lot of goals, so buyer beware and weigh your options and league settings before picking him up.

Freddie is Back-ish!

Frederik Andersen of the Carolina Hurricanes was reactivated from injured reserve on January 17. He has been out of action since early November due to an ankle surgery, which according to his surgeon went really well - which is great news for the Canes.

In a cautious move, the Hurricanes did not throw Freddie out to the wolves, instead having him back up Pyotr Kochetkov in a 3-2 win against the Los Vegas Golden Knights.

It’s unclear what role Andersen will serve in the immediate future, but one would hope that Freddie returns to his previous workload and performance as an elite goaltender.

This season prior to injury in four starts Freddie had three wins, and a very impressive .941 save percentage and a 1.48 goals against average. This was amongst the top starts in the league.

To give some perspective (and perhaps warning), Andersen is quite injury prone and has a history of struggling to stay healthy. In only 16 starts last year, he did manage to put up more elite numbers. He had 13 wins, had a .932 save percentage, and 1.84 goals against average. Again, only three losses and very elite numbers, but he needs to stay healthy.

Honorable Mention goes to the Flower

Marc-Andre Fleury of the Minnesota Wild continues his “farewell tour” and has seen big pickup numbers according to FantasySP’s Waiver Wire tool. He got the start last night vs. the struggling Nashville Predators, but unfortunately it was Fleury who was struggling. He let in five.

Wild starter Filip Gustavsson is listed as “out” due to illness, and could return as their next game on Monday, but if he doesn’t or serves as a backup while recovering, the Flower could be a good sneaky pickup as he does have impressive numbers this season serving as a backup, despite last night's showing.

Flower has only 13 starts, but has a solid nine wins, .906 save percentage, and a 2.72 goals against average. Not so shabby for an old guy and future hall of famer!
