Fantasy Baseball Drop Candidates: Closers, Injuries & Slumping Bats

A closer look at recent trends to determine which fantasy assets are safe to cut — and who still deserves patience.

After just going over some more fantasy baseball waiver wire options, it's time for our second drop story of the week.

Here's the first drop story we did.

More droppable player data can be located on the waiver wire trends most dropped tab, which can be found on any fantasy baseball page here at FantasySP.

Explore the best in-season tool to manage lineup/start decisions including waiver pickups, projections, trade suggestions, trade value charts, rest of season rankings, power rankings, and tons more with Fantasy Assistant.

Trevor Megill - Milwaukee Brewers

Megill is owned in 81% of fantasy baseball leagues right now. He was close to 100% at the start of the season, and at 89% on April 11.

Megill has hit a rough patch, allowing seven runs over his past two appearances, while only getting three outs. He's allowed eight runs on eight hits and four walks over five innings in his six appearances so far. Megill has five strikeouts to his name, and has also hit a batter.

He's been a good/great fantasy asset over the past two years, combining for 51 saves over 98 appearances. Megill has done good strikeout work, and had sub 2.75 earned run averages in both those years.

Megill has started 2026 poorly, and there's talk of him losing the closer role in Milwaukee. That'd be a big blow to his fantasy outlook, even if it was only a short-term thing.

Megill is already droppable in some standard leagues, and if he loses the closer role or hits the injured list, he'll just be a deep-league asset. Don't give up fully on Megill, but be watching news about his role, as things could change quickly, and soon.

Jordan Romano - Los Angeles Angels

Romano is sitting at 67% rostered right now. He was close to 80% less than a week ago.

Romano had been a pretty good fantasy early on, but one bad outing has him trending downward. He allowed three runs in his last outing - Romano didn't record an out over the five batters he faced.

Before that, Romano had four saves over six appearances. In that stretch, he allowed no hits and just two walks, while striking out seven.

One bad outing isn't a reason to panic and drop him. Romano should bounce back soon, and he's in no real danger of losing the closer role. Keep rostering him in deeper leagues, and in standard leagues (especially if you need some saves). Now could be a time to scoop Romano up for free, or get him for cheap in a trade.

Owen Caissie - Miami Marlins

Caissie is rostered in 36% of fantasy leagues right now. He was nearing 50% back on April 5, so he's been trending mostly down since.

He started the year strong, but has fallen to a .245 average and .309 on-base percentage over 16 games and 55 plate appearances. Caissie has four doubles and two homers among his 12 hits, plus 12 RBIs, six runs scored, a stolen base, four walks and 23 strikeouts.

Caissie has one hit over the past four games, with a whopping 10 strikeouts over that stretch. It's a rough patch for Caissie, and being that he's an outfielder, a lot of fantasy owners are parting with him for someone else.

I get the move, and support it to a degree. But I'd also be watching Caissie and be ready to re-add him if his bat heats back up. In really deep leagues, keep rostering him - just bench him until he starts hitting again (and not striking out so much).

Ryan Pepiot - Tampa Bay Rays

Pepiot is rostered in 91% of leagues at the moment. He was owned in most leagues at the start of the regular season.

Pepiot hasn't pitched this season yet because of a hip injury, and he was just moved to the 60-day injured list, so he'll be out at least through near the end of May.

With him not pitching, there's no fantasy value to take advantage of. If you need to open an IR spot for someone else, then I get dropping Pepiot.

He's been a good fantasy pitcher when healthy over the past couple years, so be ready to add him back as he nears a return to the big league field. Hopefully he doesn't miss too much more time, and can stay healthy after he returns.

Giancarlo Stanton - New York Yankees

Stanton is sitting near 75% owned right now. He'd been closer to 80% most of the year.

Over 16 games and 64 plate appearances, Stanton has a .293 average and .359 OBP. He has three doubles and a homer among his 17 hits, plus eight RBIs, five runs scored, a stolen base, six walks and 18 strikeouts.

The average and OBP are good, but his overall numbers elsewhere are a bit low. His power is down to open the year, but he's made up for it by getting on base more often.

The power should come around for Stanton. I think the bigger reason for dropping him is that he mostly is the designated hitter, and might only be eligible at a utility spot as a result. Stanton also could be eligible in the outfield, and there's plenty of options there to go around, so dropping him makes some sense. Keep rostering him in deeper leagues, and really assess things before dropping him in a standard league, as I like his fantasy outlook and think brighter days are ahead.
