MLB Injury News: Early Blows for Braves, Mets, and More
We cover injury news on Spencer Schwellenbach, Francisco Lindor and more.
The MLB season is heating up, with teams reporting. Before you know it, the regular season will be here.
There were several notable injuries announced on Tuesday, and a few more will probably be reported in the days to come. Let's go over the injuries reported from today.
Fantasy baseball injury news can be found all season on FantasySP.
Braves' Starter Banged Up
Atlanta starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach was placed on the 60-day injured list. He has inflammation in his pitching elbow.
First-year Atlanta manager Walt Weiss said they believe that Schwellenbach avoided a serious injury to his UCL. He missed time last year with an injury to the same elbow, so hopefully he isn't headed to Tommy John surgery.
Schwellenbach has been a stud since getting into the big leagues in 2024. Over 38 starts, he is 15-11 with a 3.23 earned run average over 234 1/3 innings. He has 235 strikeouts along the way.
Being out 60 days is definitely a blow for the Braves' rotation. Atlanta still has Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, Reynaldo Lopez, Grant Holmes and Bryce Elder as options, plus Joey Wentz, AJ Smith-Shawver (eventually) and others.
Schwellenbach was a big part of the team's plans, so not having him around is definitely a blow to the Braves, and fantasy baseball owners. A pitcher missing a significant portion of the season is a detriment to a player's fantasy outlook, and it makes him a risky player to draft at all.
Hopefully we get more news on Schwellenbach as the season nears, as it will be tougher to trust/draft him right now. He's the 83rd player on the ADP list, going around pick 82 overall - that should drop after this news, and he might not even be a standard league option.
We'll update you more on Schwellenbach as we learn more about him.
Mets' Star Headed Toward Surgery?
Francisco Lindor is dealing with a stress reaction in his left hamate bone and he might need surgery. New York president of operations David Stearns said that he is confident that Lindor would be ready for Opening Day if he were to undergo surgery.
He played in 160 games last season, posting a .267 average and .346 on-base percentage. He had 172 total hits, including 35 doubles and 31 homers. Lindor also had 86 RBIs, 117 runs scored, 31 stolen bases, 65 walks and 131 strikeouts.
If Lindor were to miss any time, then it would open up the shortstop spot for someone. Bo Bichette would likely slide over there until Lindor was ready, then Brett Baty and Mark Vientos could handle third base, which is where Bichette is going to play if the team is at full health.
Lindor is the 19th player on the ADP list, going around pick 23 on average. I bet his ADP could drop a little bit after this news.
Hopefully it's not an injury that interrupts Lindor's season too much. We should eventually get more news on things, but it's promising that he isn't expected to miss time regardless.
A slower start could be possible if he misses a lot of spring training, but Lindor is a good enough hitter that he'd eventually find his way and deliver like he usually does.
Other Injury News
Boston placed Tanner Houck on the 60-day injured list. That's not unexpected, as he's working back from Tommy John surgery.
Arizona's Andrew Saalfrank is also on the 60-day injured list. He had shoulder surgery.
Colorado's Kris Bryant is another player who was placed on the 60-day IL. Bryant has lumbar degenerative disc disease and looks to be headed toward another injury-plagued season.
New York Mets' Reed Garrett was also placed on the 60-day IL. He also had Tommy John surgery and is going to miss most of the upcoming season.
San Francisco's Randy Rodriguez is another pitcher on the 60-day IL. He is another one who had Tommy John surgery, so he will miss extended time.
Washington's Trevor Williams was also placed on the 60-day injured list. He had a partial UCL tear in his throwing arm, so he will be missing some time this coming season.
None of those players who were placed on the 60-day injured list are on the ADP list right now. None of them were expected to be massive fantasy assets anyways.
