Monday's Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets: Drake Baldwin, Justin Verlander and More
Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers and hitters to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.
It's time to go over the first fantasy baseball waiver wire story in what is the final week of the MLB regular season.
Also be sure to check out our story on the final week of the season.
More waiver wire options can also be found on FantasySP.
Should You Add Ha-Seong Kim?
Kim has been added in 4.67% of fantasy leagues, bringing his total mark to 22%.
He's riding a nine-game hitting streak and has 13 knocks over that span. Kim has a double and two homers among those hits, along with eight RBIs, 10 runs scored, four walks and six strikeouts.
Kim has a .313 average and .370 on-base percentage in 18 games and 73 plate appearances since joining the Braves. He has three homers and a double among his 20 total knocks, along with 12 RBIs and runs scored, six walks and 12 strikeouts.
He struggled earlier in the season with the Rays, but is heating up when fantasy owners need him the most. At this point in the fantasy season, it's all about adding the hottest fantasy hitters.
Kim definitely is one of those hitters of late, but I don't see enough in his stats to add him outside deeper setups. There's plenty of fantasy shortstops to go around, so there's probably some better options available to you if you do just a little digging.
He's a fine deep-league add for the final week of the season, so that's where he should be added.
Should You Add Drake Baldwin?
Baldwin is rostered in 66% of leagues after a 6% increase today.
He has a five-game hitting streak, during which he has two homers, two doubles and one triple. Baldwin has eight RBIs, six runs scored, two walks and just one strikeout in that stretch.
In his first big league season, Baldwin has been a pretty good fantasy asset. Over 118 games and 420 plate appearances, the primary catcher has a .273 average and .340 OBP. Baldwin has 104 total hits, including 18 home runs, 15 doubles and a triple. He also has 76 RBIs, 52 runs scored, 36 walks and 62 strikeouts.
He's been hitting cleanup lately for the Braves, so that's obviously a favorable fantasy spot for a hitter. He has started in each of the team's past five games, although the team has faced five right-handed pitchers over that stretch.
Baldwin remains a pretty solid fantasy option for the final week of the season. By his own percentage, you should already know he's a really good deep-league option.
At a tough fantasy position to fine production at, Baldwin could be a great add for the final week of play. He should play just about every game, and if he stays hot at the plate, should add plenty of fantasy value to your squad.
Should You Add Justin Verlander?
Verlander is up 10.33% as he prepares for a Monday start. He's owned in 62.33% of leagues.
He will make a start against the Cardinals in one of just three Monday games. Verlander just faced them on September 6, working six scoreless innings.
He allowed three hits in that contest. Verlander struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Since then, he's allowed a run over seven innings to the Dodgers and tossed a seven-inning shutout against the Diamondbacks, so he's been trending up. He has just 13 strikeouts over his three September starts, but if he can keep limiting runs, there's still plenty of fantasy value to take advantage of.
On a short day for fantasy pitchers, Verlander is the best option among the available waiver wire guys. His matchup is solid, so I'd make him my top priority today.
That goes for deep leagues or standard leagues. Trust in the veteran to get the job done today.
Should You Add Alec Burleson?
Burleson is rostered in 59% of leagues - he was at 55% on September 20.
He's been rolling at the plate of late, and takes a six-game hitting streak into Monday's game. Burleson has 10 hits over that span, including a homer and three doubles. He has three RBIs, four runs scored, two walks and hit by pitches and three strikeouts in that span.
In 134 games and 525 plate appearances this season, Burleson has a .289 average and .343 OBP, so it's a bit shocking to see his own percentage as low as it is. He has 138 total hits, including 25 doubles, 18 homers and two triples, along with 66 RBIs, 53 runs scored, 38 walks, five stolen bases and 75 strikeouts.
Him being eligible in the outfield or at first base knocks down his fantasy value a bit, as those are both stacked positions. Still, he's delivered enough to have a bit higher own percentage.
I'd be happy to add and utilize him over the final week of the season, and that goes for all leagues.
Should You Add Michael McGreevy?
McGreevy will also make a start on Monday. He's rostered in 26.62% of leagues after a 7.29% increase.
He is facing Verlander tonight. McGreevy allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings in his only start against San Fran this season. He struck out three in that contest.
McGreevy has allowed just one run over his past two starts, which have covered 13 innings. He's allowed eight hits and three walks, while striking out nine. Those starts were against the Mariners and Reds.
This is a so-so fantasy matchup, and he hasn't been quite as good as Verlander of late. Still, on a slow day for MLB action and streaming options, McGreevy is one of the few options, so he's being added in a bunch of leagues.
I'd prefer to only start him in deeper leagues, but if you are happy with his two most recent starts, then adding and utilizing him in standard leagues isn't the craziest idea. Just don't be expecting stellar results and know you are taking a risk.
