Fantasy Baseball Drop Candidates: Should You Move on From Edwards, Harrison and More?

Here are five players whose fantasy managers should consider dropping as September gets underway.

Let's now take a look at some fantasy baseball drop candidates as September hits.

More droppable player data can be located on the waiver wire trends most dropped tab, which can be found on any fantasy baseball page here at FantasySP.

Xavier Edwards - Miami Marlins

Edwards is sitting at 94.97% rostered after just hitting the injured list. He's on the 10-day list with a sprained thumb.

There's no timetable for Edwards' return, so this is a tricky situation. He's been a pretty good asset most of the fantasy season, so it's a bummer to have to consider dropping him now.

Over 137 games and 574 plate appearances this year, Edwards owns a .282 average and .361 on-base percentage. He has 17 doubles and six triples and homers among his 141 total knocks, plus 51 RBIs, 59 runs scored, 20 stolen bases, 65 walks and 77 strikeouts.

His fantasy value doesn't come in power, but instead with a good average/OBP, plus a lower strikeout total. He should be eligible at second base and shortstop, which upped his fantasy value too.

Those lacking IR spots or needing to get production immediately from Edwards' roster spot should drop him, as we don't even have a timetable for his return. Be ready to add him back in leagues he's dropped in if he returns later in the season, but with the fantasy playoffs beginning, you need players to be active and producing right now, and Edwards is not in that boat.

Kyle Harrison - Milwaukee Brewers

Harrison is at 96.76% rostered after his last start, but will plummet after getting rocked.

Harrison lasted just 3 2/3 innings against the Cubs on Monday. He allowed nine runs on 10 hits and two walks. Harrison struck out just three batters, while giving up five home runs. He had a couple good starts before that, but was also roughed up against the Padres before that.

Harrison still sits with a 3.45 earned run average over 22 starts and 107 innings pitched this season. He's 10-4 and has 130 strikeouts, so he's been a pretty good fantasy asset.

Some inconsistency is starting to show with Harrison, who continues to excel in home starts, while struggling in road outings. Keep that in mind as you look to stream/start him in fantasy leagues down the stretch.

He's droppable in some standard leagues today though, and you need to be cautious with him going forward. Be wary of trying him in tougher matchups, especially if those are road outings for him. If he bounces back, he's worth holding, as he's shown high-end fantasy upside at points this season.

Dillon Dingler - Detroit Tigers

Dingler is sitting at 93.85% rostered at the moment. He's been even closer to 100% though, so he's slightly trending down.

He has one hit over his past four games. Dingler has a walk, no RBIs or runs scored and six strikeouts in that stretch.

Over 127 games and 535 plate appearances this year, Dingler has a .248 average and .313 OBP. He's got 82 RBIs, 65 runs scored, 32 walks and 121 strikeouts as well. Dingler has 26 homers, 24 doubles and two triples among his 120 total hits.

The catcher has been a pretty good fantasy asset, so it's a bummer that he's struggling at such a crucial time in the fantasy baseball season. Catcher is one of the hardest spots to find consistent production though, so I'm more prone to ride through some cold stretches with guys who have been top options this season.

Dingler is in that club, but if he continues to struggle at the dish, you might need to switch fantasy catchers for the final few fantasy matchups. Try to keep rostering Dingler for a bit longer if you can though.

Payton Tolle and Willson Contreras - Boston Red Sox

Tolle was at 96.9% after his last start, but is now being dropped after a lackluster performance. Contreras is owned in 91.62% of leagues after hitting the 10-day IL.

Tolle made it 5 2/3 innings, but was tagged for four runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out six batters to work out of more trouble.

He'd been pitching pretty well before that, and sits with a 3.23 ERA over 23 starts this season. Tolle is 8-6 and has 147 strikeouts over 131 innings pitched overall.

His most recent start wasn't the best, but it wasn't horrendous either. If you were treating him as a streaming pitcher in standard leagues, and need as many starts as possible, then he's droppable today, but I like what he's done this season and would prefer to keep rostering/utilizing Tolle down the stretch.

As for Contreras, he's on the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring. It's been a lingering issue for him, so the Red Sox decided to shut him down for a bit to see if that helps. He could return after those 10 days, so most are just throwing Contreras onto an IR spot for now.

He wasn't owned in all leagues anyways, so some are also dropping him. First base is a loaded fantasy spot, so it makes sense to drop Contreras if you need immediate 1B help.

Over 125 games and 517 plate appearances, Contreras has a .274 average and .384 OBP, so he's been a pretty solid fantasy hitter to deploy in 2026. He has 79 RBIs, 66 runs scored, 57 walks, three stolen bases and 131 strikeouts as well. Contreras has 119 total hits, including 26 homers, 21 doubles and three triples.

Determining whether or not to drop Contreras today depends on your fantasy roster setup. If you can stash him in an IR spot, or on your bench, then I don't mind doing that, as he's been productive when healthy. If you don't need him though, then he can be dropped for someone on the waiver wire.
