Assessing More Early MLB Trade Deadline Deals: Amed Rosario, Erick Fedde and More
Morgan assesses some MLB trades from a fantasy baseball perspective as the trade deadline nears.
We broke down a couple MLB trades from last week (Ryan McMahon and Gregory Soto trades and Josh Naylor trade) and are back to revisit some trades from over the weekend.
The FantasySP team will discuss MLB trades that happen between now and the deadline this Thursday, so keep checking back for more!

Yankees Land Another Hitter
After getting McMahon on Friday, the Yankees traded for Amed Rosario on Saturday. New York sent Clayton Beeter and Browm Martinez to the Washington Nationals in the deal.
Rosario didn't get into Sunday's game, so his 47 games and 158 plate appearances so far came with the Nationals only. He had a .270 average and .310 on-base percentage to this point of the year.
Rosario has eight doubles and five home runs among his 40 total hits, along with 18 RBIs, 19 runs scored, a stolen base, seven walks and 22 strikeouts.
He's played second base, third base, shortstop and right field this season. Rosario has also played center and left field over his nine-year career.
I was surprised to see the Yankees add two hitters in trades, because they really need pitching. It made more sense after Aaron Judge hit the injured list with a right flexor strain.
Rosario can help fill in for a few days with Judge out, and then he gives the team a versatile defender for the rest of the year. He's only rostered in 3% of fantasy leagues, so he hasn't been a big fantasy asset to this point of the year.
Rosario is in a better fantasy situation now, and could become a deep-league asset in time. He'll need to play regularly and produce at the plate for that to happen.
He's more a player to keep an eye on than a waiver wire add immediately in any leagues. Keep tabs on Rosario.
Beeter became the Nationals' No. 20 prospect after the deal went through. He's pitched 7 1/3 innings at the big league level between 2024 and 2025, but has a 9.82 ERA so far. His 3.63 ERA over 324 2/3 minor league innings is the much more appealing mark for him.
Beeter is 13-18 over 83 starts and 115 appearances in the minor leagues. He has 468 strikeouts and 184 walks, along with a .206 average against him.
He should get a chance to compete at the big league level for Washington later this season. I don't see Beeter becoming a big-time fantasy asset ever, and his dynasty value isn't good as he's 26 years old already.
Martinez is not among the Nationals' top-30 ranked prospects right now. The 18-year-old is playing in the Dominican Summer League and has a .320 average and .426 OBP over 56 games the past two years.
Martinez has eight doubles and three homers among his 55 total hits, along with 35 RBIs, 42 runs scored, 21 walks, 34 stolen bases and 33 strikeouts.
Martinez has a little dynasty value, but as an unranked prospect right now, he's got an uphill climb ahead of him. Playing for the Nationals will give him a better chance to move up the minor league ranks and maybe make the big leagues sooner. He's only worth rostering in incredibly deep dynasty leagues.
Royals Get Outfielder from Arizona
Kansas City acquired Randal Grichuk from Arizona. Andrew Hoffmann was sent from the Royals to the Diamondbacks.
Grichuk started and batted sixth in Sunday's game against the Guardians. Grichuk singled among his four at-bats. He effectively replaced Jac Caglianone, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Grichuk has a .240 average and .276 OBP over 71 games and 192 plate appearances this season now. He has a career .252 average and .299 OBP, so a little improvement could come. Grichuk is more of a depth outfielder, and could rarely start when Caglianone comes back.
He's only rostered in 1% of fantasy leagues. Grichuk could be streamed in some really deep fantasy leagues for as long as Caglianone is out, but there has to be better fantasy options out there for you.
This is more of a nothing trade from a fantasy perspective, at least with the major leaguer in the deal.
Hoffmann is a 25-year-old right-handed pitcher. He appeared in three games for the Royals this season, covering 4 2/3 innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks, while striking out five.
Hoffmann has a career 4.55 ERA in the minor leagues, but had a 2.25 mark over 40 innings this season. After mostly starting in the past, Hoffmann has worked exclusively in relief this season.
He could gain back some fantasy value if he gets back to being a starter, but he is unlikely to ever be a big fantasy asset. Hoffmann should only be rostered in extremely deep fantasy leagues. He doesn't have much dynasty value either, so this deal is basically irrelevant for fantasy baseball owners.
Braves Get Pitcher from Cardinals
Erick Fedde was sent from the Cardinals to the Braves. Future considerations were the return.
He'll get another crack at an MLB rotation after the Cardinals designated him for assignment. Fedde will replace Grant Holmes (among many other starters) who hit the 60-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
Fedde had a 3.30 ERA over 177 1/3 innings in 2024, but had a 5.22 ERA over 20 starts with St. Louis this season. He allowed 62 runs (59 earned) on 106 hits and 47 walks, while striking out just 63 batters. Opponents hit .270 against him.
Last season, Fedde had a 1.16 WHIP, so his 1.50 mark this season is a huge downgrade. He had 154 strikeouts as well, so that mark is noticeable too.
He might not turn into his 2024 self again, but at least he gets a crack at a big league rotation, instead of just being released. Atlanta needs starting rotation help desperately, and that means Fedde could get consistent starts the rest of the season, even if he's not pitching super well.
Fedde has been trending down as a fantasy asset for a while now. He was at nearly 37% owned at the end of June, but sits at just 12% right now. Fedde should get a little bump up after being moved to the Braves.
Fedde will get a start against the Royals on Tuesday. That's a favorable matchup, and maybe a change of scenery will do Fedde well. I don't expect him to be a big-time streaming option, but a few fantasy owners might give him a chance.
He's more a pitcher to keep tabs on then add immediately. It seems unlikely that Fedde would ever become more than a deep-league streaming option, but you just never know. He could become a keeper in those leagues with a few good starts for the Braves, and maybe even be a standard league streamer in the right matchups eventually.
This seems like a trade to gloss over, but with some of Fedde's big league success in the past, I at least wanted to bring it to your attention.
Hopefully there's more notable fantasy trades over the next couple days!
