Is It Time to Add Matt Shaw Off the Waiver Wire in Standard Fantasy Baseball Leagues?

Looking at a few waiver wire hitters to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.

It's time to go over another batch of fantasy baseball waiver wire options.

Today, we'll start with hitters. We won't cover anyone who appeared in yesterday's article.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Matt Shaw?

Shaw is rostered in 68.83% of fantasy leagues after a 2.59% increase today.

Shaw was demoted to the minor leagues after a slow start to his first MLB season. He raked in Triple-A and has been much better since getting called back up on May 19.

In seven games and 29 plate appearances, the 23-year-old has a .346 batting average and .414 on-base percentage. Shaw has five doubles among his nine total hits, along with two RBIs and stolen bases, five runs scored, three walks and five strikeouts.

His overall season stats are still rough to look at. Shaw has a .226 average and .330 OBP across 25 games and 97 plate appearances. He has six doubles and a homer among his 19 total hits. Shaw also has five RBIs, two stolen bases, 16 runs scored, 13 walks and 23 strikeouts.

All 25 of his appearances have been at third base. Shaw has been hitting eighth or ninth of late. Usually, that's not a favorable spot for a fantasy hitter to be, but in a stacked Cubs' lineup, Shaw can definitely still deliver some solid fantasy totals.

Shaw should be rostered in all dynasty/keeper leagues. He has his most fantasy value there.

I'd say Shaw needs to be rostered in all deeper redraft leagues as well right now. He looks a lot better in his second stint in the big leagues, and he's a starter, or near starter, in those leagues.

Standard league owners need to keep a close eye on him as well. He's trending up, and might not be available as a waiver wire asset for too much longer. Really all Shaw needs to do to prove himself is have another week of strong hitting results, or hit a power surge.

If you are interested in adding Shaw, I'd suggest doing it soon, because his value continues to rise by the day.

Should You Add Carlos Narvaez?

Narvaez is up 4.32% today and now sits at 21.85% overall.

Across 40 games and 152 plate appearances this season, Narvaez has a .297 average and .362 OBP. He has 10 doubles and five home runs among his 41 total knocks, along with 17 RBIs, a stolen base, 20 runs scored, 14 walks and 36 strikeouts.

He looked like the clear No. 2 catcher in Boston behind Connor Wong coming into the season, but Narvaez has passed him for playing time, and is one of the more productive hitters across the league.

Narvaez has an eight-game hitting streak, and that dates back to May 17. He hasn't appeared in just two games over that stretch.

He's hit either third or fourth in the Red Sox' lineup over his past three starts. That lines up with Alex Bregman being out with his injury, so this could continue for at least as long as Bregman is out.

The Boston lineup has some talent scattered throughout it, but outside the big names, it's underperformed a bit this season. Narvaez can still be a productive fantasy hitter from a spot near the heart of the order though.

At a tough fantasy position to find consistent talent, Narvaez is a name to definitely do some digging on. He's not going to keep these numbers up all season most likely, but he could remain productive enough to still be a decent fantasy asset all year.

I'd add Narvaez in a good amount of deeper leagues right now. Even if you just need a better backup catcher, I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Narvaez. At worst, you just drop him if his production eventually falls off. He could start at an additional hitting spot for now though.

Narvaez would have to continue his strong hitting ways for him to become a standard league fantasy asset. He's worth keeping an eye on at least, but I think Narvaez might top out as a deep-league asset.

Should You Add Austin Hays?

Hays was added in 3.49% of leagues at the time of publication. He's rostered in 44.73% of leagues overall now.

Hays has at least one hit in 11 of his last 12 games. He has 16 total knocks in that span, including three doubles and triples and one homer. Hays has 12 RBIs, a stolen base, seven runs scored, a walk and nine strikeouts in that span as well.

For the season, Hays is hitting .321 and he's getting on base at a .361 clip. Across 29 games and 122 plate appearances, Hays has 36 total hits, including six homers and doubles and three triples. He has 25 RBIs, two stolen bases, 22 runs scored, seven walks and 28 strikeouts.

He was red hot to start his season, and an injury led to fantasy owners bailing on him. Hays started slow in his return to the field, but is back on a heater at the plate. I think he's undervalued and underowned in fantasy leagues.

Hays being an outfielder doesn't do him any favors, and is part of the reason why he isn't owned in more leagues. Still, he's doing enough when he's on the field to roster and utilize in some more leagues.

I'd at least say Hays needs to be rostered in all deeper redraft leagues. He should be starting in those leagues right now, and while his stats are likely to drop as the season continues, he could remain a bench option in those leagues.

Hays could be utilized in standard redraft leagues right now with how he's producing at the plate. He's hitting cleanup, which obviously is a good spot for a fantasy hitter. He's probably outproducing an outfielder or two of yours right now, so unless that player has a higher upside, I wouldn't mind replacing them with Hays.

Should You Add Miguel Vargas?

Vargas is up 2.5% today and now sits at 31.11% overall.

He has five hits over his past three contests, including three doubles and a homer. Vargas has been pretty good since May 13, collecting 16 hits over 13 games and 56 plate appearances. He has five doubles and homers in that stretch, along with 11 RBIs, eight runs scored, a walk and seven strikeouts.

In 51 games and 210 plate appearances so far this season, Vargas has a .239 average and .314 OBP. He has seven home runs and 13 doubles among his 45 total knocks. Vargas also has 23 RBIs, a stolen base, 23 runs scored, 18 walks and 37 strikeouts as well.

Vargas has played first and third base this season, so there's a chance he's eligible to play at both those spots for fantasy leagues. That would add a little more fantasy value to his name.

He's batting second or third most days for the White Sox. Chicago is not a good lineup for a fantasy hitter to be in, but as you can see from Vargas' recent numbers, he's doing enough to provide some fantasy value.

Vargas is just a deep-league asset in my eyes, and that will likely remain true unless he's traded at the deadline. He'll be a name to keep tabs on when the trade deadline is approaching.

He is worth adding and utilizing in more deeper leagues though, even if it's just until his bat cools off. Don't overlook him just because he's on a bad team.
