Fantasy Baseball Drop Candidates: 5 Players Trending Down

Let's do another fantasy baseball drop article before the weekend hits.

Here's the last drop article we did - we won't cover any of those players in today's story.

Byron Buxton - Minnesota Twins

Buxton is rostered in 92.89% of fantasy baseball leagues right now. He's trending down as he deals with another injury.

Buxton is dealing with a hip injury that's bothered him on and off all season. No decision has been made on Buxton, but calling up Walker Jenkins (a big waiver wire add today) could be a sign that Buxton is headed back to the injured list.

Across 93 games and 408 plate appearances this season, Buxton has a .254 average and .319 on-base percentage. He's got 25 homers, 18 doubles and a triple among his 94 total hits, plus 46 RBIs, 65 runs scored, 30 walks, seven stolen bases and 100 strikeouts.

When healthy, Buxton can be a pretty good fantasy asset. He's injury prone though, and if he hits the 10-day IL, or is out even longer, he is droppable in fantasy baseball leagues. I'd wait to get a call on his status before dropping him in too many leagues, but be ready to make a move if he is out for a bit of time.

Noah Cameron - Kansas City Royals

Cameron is being let go in a few leagues after his most recent start. He's at 82.23% overall.

I'm not really sure why he's being dropped, as he worked six strong innings in that start. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out three batters. Cameron has a 1.29 earned run average and 4-0 record over his past seven starts, which have spanned 48 2/3 innings.

He's got a 3.98 ERA over 26 appearances (25 starts) this season. Cameron is 9-8 with 131 strikeouts over 149 1/3 innings.

Cameron has pitched very well of late, and I'd be happy to add him in any fantasy leagues for the stretch run. He's better than a streaming option right now, so only drop him between starts if his results fall off.

Jake Bauers - Milwaukee Brewers

Bauers is owned in 92.54% of leagues, which is slightly down from earlier this month.

Bauers is dealing with shin splints, and hasn't started in any of the past three games. That's a bummer, as Bauers has been the Brewers' best hitter most of the season.

Over 119 games and 476 plate appearances, the first baseman and corner outfielder has a .272 average and .382 OBP. He has 109 total hits, including 23 homers, 19 doubles and two triples. Bauers has 75 RBIs, 76 runs scored, 70 walks, nine stolen bases and 122 strikeouts.

With him missing time, Bauers is droppable in some redraft standard leagues. Be watching his status and add him back when he's back in the starting lineup. If he hits the 10-day IL eventually, he'd be droppable in a lot of standard leagues, so also keep tabs on that maybe happening.

Sean Burke - Chicago White Sox

Burke sits at 91.54% rostered - he's fallen since his last start, which was two days ago.

He lasted just three innings in that outing. Burke allowed only two runs, but gave up two hits and eight walks. He struck out three batters and left after 92 pitches. Burke allowed four runs in the two starts before that, so he's trending down right now.

Overall in 27 appearances (23 starts), Burke is 7-6 with a 3.32 ERA. He has 161 strikeouts over 149 innings pitched, so he's been a pretty good fantasy asset.

At the critical juncture of the fantasy season, Burke has struggled, so he's droppable in some fantasy leagues. He's trending toward being a standard league streaming option, and that's how I view him right now. Don't be afraid to drop him, but also be willing to stream him, especially in good matchups, given what he's done over the course of the season.

Brandon Nimmo - Texas Rangers

Nimmo is at 82.23% rostered, which is slightly down from most of this month.

He has a hit in two straight games, but those are his only hits over the past eight games. Nimmo has eight strikeouts over 37 plate appearances in that stretch.

In 128 games and over 543 plate appearances on the season, Nimmo has a .259 average and .326 OBP, plus 49 RBIs, 53 runs scored, 43 walks, six stolen bases and 116 strikeouts. He has 30 doubles, 13 homers and four triples among his 127 total knocks.

Nimmo can be streaky at the plate, and he's in a rough stretch right now. That makes him droppable, and he's someone I actually just dropped this morning, making way for me to add Jenkins. Keep tabs on Nimmo and add him back if his bat heats up eventually, but he's not one to hold through extended struggles.
