Dodgers Bullpen Battle Headlines Tuesday’s Fantasy Baseball Pitcher Pickups
Breaking down the top waiver wire pitching adds, including the evolving Dodgers closer situation and key streaming matchups.
It's time for our second round of fantasy baseball waiver wire stories of the week! We will cover pitchers first.
Check back in a bit for the story on hitters.
Fantasy baseball waiver wire options can be found all season on FantasySP!
Carmen Mlodzinski - Pittsburgh Pirates
Mlodzinski has been added in 8.01% of fantasy baseball leagues so far today. He's at 21.04% overall now.
Mlodzinski will be facing the Rangers on Monday night. That's a solid matchup on paper.
He's pitched four times, including three starts and then serving as a follower (he went six innings in that performance). Mlodzinski is 1-0 with a 1.77 earned run average over 20 1/3 innings pitched. He's allowed just four runs on 19 hits and eight walks, while striking out 20 batters.
Mlodzinski has looked good early on, and that's more why he's a good fantasy asset for tonight. I like utilizing him in most deeper leagues, but believe there's better standard league options out there.
Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia - Los Angeles Dodgers
Scott is up 12.7%, while Vesia has been added in 6.94% of leagues. Scott sits at 46.13% overall, while Vesia is at 49.43%.
Both LA relievers are on the rise after Edwin Diaz was placed on the injured list. Diaz is out until the second half of the season, and could miss roughly three months. That means the Dodgers need a new closer, and the team isn't naming one, so it's fair to see both guys on the rise.
Scott was the closer last year. In 10 appearances so far this season, Scott has four holds and a 1.04 ERA over 8 2/3 innings. He's allowed a run on five hits and no walks, while striking out eight batters.
Vesia has two saves and three holds over 10 appearances so far this season. He's allowed no runs on two hits and three walks over 8 2/3 innings, while striking out 10 batters.
Both have been pitching well, and both are deserving of getting save chances. We'll have to wait and see who emerges as the closer, or if there's even a true go-to guy. For now, I'd only add Scott or Vesia in deeper leagues, but they can be added in standard leagues as soon as they earn some saves.
Landen Roupp - San Francisco Giants
Roupp is up 5.1%, which brings his overall mark to 56.94%.
Roupp will be facing the Dodgers on Tuesday night, which is not a very favorable matchup. He's been pretty good early on, so that's why Roupp is on the rise today.
In four starts so far, Roupp is 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA over 22 2/3 innings. He's allowed eight runs (six earned) on 15 hits and seven walks. Roupp has struck out 24 batters.
I don't like his matchup on Tuesday night, otherwise he'd be a pretty good streaming option. The matchup holds him back from being a standard league option, in my eyes. I'm only comfortable trying him in deeper leagues.
Dustin May - St. Louis Cardinals
May has been picked up in 5.85% of leagues, and sits at 12.93% overall now.
May will be facing the Marlins on Tuesday evening. That's a pretty good matchup on paper.
May started the year poorly, allowing 13 runs on 17 hits and three walks over 7 1/3 innings in his first two starts. He's bounced back across the past two outings, allowing three runs on 10 hits and one walk over 12 innings. May had seven punchouts in the first two outings combined, and has eight strikeouts over the past two starts.
I like how May is trending, and his matchup tonight is solid, but I still need to see more before firing him up in standard leagues. May is another deep-league option only in my eyes for tonight.
Steven Matz - Tampa Bay Rays
Matz has been added in 3.63% of leagues, bringing his overall mark to 45.56%.
He will be facing the Reds on Tuesday evening. That's a pretty solid matchup for the Rays' veteran.
Matz allowed four runs in his first start, but just five runs in his three starts since. He's 3-0 with a 3.80 ERA over 21 1/3 innings so far. Matz has allowed nine runs on 16 hits and six walks, while striking out 21 batters.
Matz has been surprisingly good early on, and in a favorable matchup, I see why he's being added today. I like him in deeper leagues for sure, and would consider him for standard leagues, depending on my other available options.
Reynaldo Lopez - Atlanta Braves
Lopez is up 4.93% and sits at 58.91% overall.
He will take on the Nationals this evening. That's another pretty solid matchup on paper, which is aiding in Lopez's own percentage rising.
Across four starts, Lopez is 1-0, but he has a 2.18 ERA over 20 2/3 innings. He's allowed five runs (three earned) on 15 hits and eight walks, while striking out 19 batters.
He's been good early on, and has another good matchup tonight, so things look promising for Lopez. He's another very good deep-league asset, and is also worth some standard league streams tonight. I'd say he's probably the best streaming option from today's story.
