Friday's Fantasy Baseball Drop Candidates: New Yankees' Relievers, Jonathan Aranda, Isaac Paredes and More

Looking at several fantasy baseball drop candidates after the MLB Trade Deadline.

The dust has started to settle after the MLB trade deadline.

After checking in on some waiver wire options (hitters and relief pitchers), let's now go over some drop candidates. Here's the last drop story I did.

More droppable player data can be located on the waiver wire trends most dropped tab, which can be found on any fantasy baseball page here at FantasySP.

Explore the best in-season tool to manage lineup/start decisions including waiver pickups, projections, trade suggestions, trade value charts, rest of season rankings, power rankings, and tons more with Fantasy Assistant.

Should You Drop Camilo Doval and David Bednar?

Doval and Bednar are trending down after being traded to the Yankees. Doval is owned in 65% of leagues, while Bednar is at 80%.

The move was massive for the Yankees and their bullpen, but the fantasy outlook for each former closer was detrimental. Devin Williams is already in place in New York, and although he struggled early in the season, he seems like the closer for now still.

I think Bednar would be given save chances if Williams was given an off day, or started to struggle again down the stretch. Doval worked into the closer role this season, so he's likely behind Williams and Bednar and maybe Luke Weaver too - this Yankees' bullpen is stacked, by the way.

Doval is 4-2 with 15 saves, four blown saves and seven holds over 47 appearances and 46 2/3 innings. He's got a 3.09 ERA and 50 strikeouts along the way.

Bednar has a 2-5 record, 17 saves, no blown saves and three holds over 42 games and 38 innings. He's got a 2.37 ERA despite a horrific start to the season, along with 51 strikeouts.

Even those numbers favor Bednar, so my reasoning is backed up on him earning saves over Doval.

This is still a situation to watch daily, and it could turn into a fantasy owner's nightmare if the Yankees go to a committee. I think Doval needs to be dropped in all standard leagues, and that should happen in time. Bednar should be dropped in a few leagues right now, but I'd want to see who gets the next couple saves before letting him go in all standard leagues.

Neither Bednar nor Doval are worth a standard league spot if they aren't earning regular saves. They are each valuable enough to be deep-league assets, especially if holds or reliever wins are valuable in your leagues.

We'll cover closers more over the weekend, so check back for that!

Should You Drop Jonathan Aranda?

Aranda is trending down and is rostered in 78% of leagues now. He suffered a wrist injury on Thursday and is expected to miss some time.

Aranda has played in 103 games and gotten 409 plate appearances this season. He has a .316 average and .394 on-base percentage, so it's a shame he got injured. Aranda has 22 doubles and 12 homers among his 113 hits, along with 54 RBIs, 53 runs scored, 40 walks and 102 strikeouts.

If he indeed is placed on the injured list with a multi-week injury, Aranda should be dropped in all the standard leagues that don't have an IR spot available. He might not get added back in those leagues depending on how long he's out.

Depending on the state of your fantasy team, deep-league owners might also have to drop Aranda in time. If he's only out 2-3 weeks, I'd do my best to hang on to him, but if it's longer than that, or you simply need that roster spot in order to remain competitive, then dropping Aranda will be a move for many to make.

He'll be worth adding back in deeper leagues at least if he returns before the end of your season, so keep an eye on his status and react accordingly.

Should You Drop Ryan Pressly?

Pressly is owned in 34% of leagues, but that's likely to fall way off after he was designated for assignment by the Cubs.

He'll likely catch on with another team for the stretch run, but he was already rostered in too many leagues, so this transaction will finally get his own percentage to where it should be - low.

Over 44 games and 41 1/3 innings pitched this season, Presley has a 4.35 ERA. He is 2-3 with five saves, two blown saves and seven holds, along with tallying just 28 strikeouts.

He allowed a grand slam in his last appearance, and with a couple of the team's deadline moves, the Cubs decided to move on from the veteran reliever.

Pressly could benefit from a change of scenery, but he's unlikely to become a big fantasy asset the rest of the season, and maybe the rest of his career again. Drop him outside the deepest of leagues, which is where he should have been close to even before he was designated for assignment.

Should You Drop Isaac Paredes?

The Astros beefed up the left side of their infield at the trade deadline, and that's because Paredes is expected to miss the rest of the season, and several months with a hamstring injury. He's at 80% rostered after being at 96% on July 22.

If he's indeed out for the season, there's no use rostering him in any standard leagues the rest of the year. Hopefully the dynasty owners out there have an IR spot to roster him in, because he could miss the start of next season too.

Over 94 games and 409 plate appearances this year, Paredes had a .259 average and .359 OBP. He popped 19 homers, a triple and 15 doubles among his 91 total hits. Paredes also had 50 RBIs, 51 runs scored, 49 walks and 67 strikeouts.

He was a big fantasy asset and is going to be missed by the fantasy owners that rostered him. It won't be easy replacing him, and it'll take a trade to get similar production, as there's no waiver wire option who can do what Paredes did.

Maybe picking up Carlos Correa, who is expected to now play third base for Houston, is the move to make. We covered him in the hitter waiver wire story, so you can read more about him there.

Should You Drop Ryan Helsley?

Helsley was traded to the Mets at the deadline. It's a good move for his career, but he'll likely serve as a setup man to Edwin Diaz the rest of the season, so his fantasy value is sapped up.

Helsley is already down to 93%, after being near 97% a day ago. He'll be dropped in a hurry after Diaz earns the first few saves.

Helsley ended his time with the Cardinals with a 3-1 record, 21 saves and five blown saves. He covered 36 innings over 36 appearances and had a 3.00 ERA, along with 41 strikeouts.

He still can have deep-league fantasy appeal, although his strikeout numbers leave plenty to be desired. Helsley might earn the occasional save, but his fantasy value is going to drop as a setup man, and he'll likely be a deep-league asset at best.

He should be dropped in most standard leagues already, and in a week, he could be near 50%. Helsely is a name to keep in mind in case Diaz ever gets injured, but it'll be 2026 at least before Helsley should be rostered in nearly 100% of leagues again.
