Is it Time to Move on from Sandy Alcantara in Fantasy Baseball Leagues?

Looking at several fantasy baseball drop candidates in the middle of the week.

After looking at some fantasy baseball waiver wire targets for Wednesday, and then three pitching prospects who will be debuting, let's now take a peek at some drop candidates.

More droppable player data can be located on the waiver wire trends most dropped tab, which can be found on any fantasy baseball page here at FantasySP.

Should You Drop Sandy Alcantara?

Alcantara was dropped in 1.8% of fantasy leagues today, bringing his overall percentage down to 87%.

He's struggled in his return to the field. Across six starts, Alcantara has a 2-3 record, but a 8.31 earned run average. Across 26 innings, he's allowed 24 runs on 26 hits and 17 walks. Alcantara has struck out 19 batters.

Alcantara won the National League Cy Young in 2022, but finished with a 4.14 ERA across 28 starts in 2023 and then was hurt in 2024. He's got a career 3.46 ERA across eight MLB seasons.

He's not on a good team, but that's not why Alcantara isn't a good fantasy pitcher right now. He's getting rocked in just about every start. He's made appearances against the Pirates, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, Reds and Dodgers now.

Alcantara has allowed at least two runs in every start, while giving up four or more runs three times. He gave up seven runs against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

I was skeptical of Alcantara after his long layoff, but I didn't expect this level of production. He's bound to improve his numbers as the season rolls along, but he's really hard to trust in any format right now.

He could face the Dodgers again in his next start, and after what we saw on Tuesday, I wouldn't start Alcantara in a standard league for that game. He'd still be an option in deep fantasy setups, but I'd do my best to bench him.

Things lighten up a touch after that, with a possible start against the White Sox maybe after that. Right now, Alcantara is really a deep-league keeper with standard league streaming value. His big name will keep him rostered in most leagues, but he's simply not producing, and you shouldn't trust him until his numbers improve or he's got a favorable matchup ahead.

I'd do my best to hold Alcantara in standard redraft leagues, but I also understand if you need to move him to get a contributor on your team immediately. Watch Alcantara over his next couple starts if he does get dropped in your league, as he could bounce back to his elite form at any point.

Should You Drop Dylan Moore?

Moore is down 4.8% today, bringing his overall mark to 72%. He was placed on the 10-day injured list with a hip injury, so dropping him makes sense.

Moore has been a surprise breakout fantasy asset to start the season. Across 23 games and 78 plate appearances, Moore has a .286 average and .346 OBP, along with nine RBIs, five stolen bases, seven walks and 16 runs scored. He has six homers and a double among his 20 total knocks.

The versatile Moore has a career .210 average and .318 OBP, so you can see why he's been a surprise fantasy asset. His most homers in a season was just 12, so he's already halfway to that mark.

The injury is terrible timing for him, and for his sake, I hope it doesn't slow his hot hitting. It's possible he misses just 10 days (retroactive to April 26), but he'll be worth keeping tabs on.

If your standard redraft league doesn't have any IR spots available, then Moore is someone you should be dropping. That's hard to do given his strong start and position versatility, but there's a chance Moore never gets back to that level of player.

He could be worth adding again in some standard leagues when he's activated, but I think he might be a better deep-league redraft option for the remainder of 2025.

Don't drop Moore in deeper redraft leagues, even if you don't have IR spots available. He's hitting too well and is too valuable as a super-utility player to let go of yet. Moore could be dropped if his production falls off after he returns to the field.

Should You Drop Dustin May?

May is down 5.1% today, bringing his overall mark to 71%. He was a streaming option two days ago, but that drop percentage is not what you see from a typical streamer after their start.

May had a favorable matchup against Miami on Monday, but allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings, while striking out three. May gave up seven runs in five frames against the Cubs the start before that.

He has a 1-1 record and respectable 3.95 ERA across five starts and 27 1/3 innings this season. May has allowed 15 runs (12 earned) on 22 hits and 12 walks overall, while punching out 22 batters.

After his last couple starts, May is starting to look more like a deep-league keeper who can be streamed in standard leagues in favorable matchups. He could face the Braves and Marlins in his next two outings, and those are both fairly favorable matchups, at least.

I'd be fine dropping May in standard leagues, then streaming him again when he's starting his next couple games. Until he delivers consistently good results against all opponents, he's not going to stick in standard redraft leagues.

Should You Drop Pavin Smith?

Smith was let go in 2% of leagues, bringing his overall mark down to 44%.

He has good numbers for the season, but has fallen off a bit of late. Over 27 games and 90 plate appearances this season, Smith has a .347 average and .478 OBP. He also has nine doubles and four homers among his 25 total knocks, along with nine RBIs, a stolen base, 18 walks and 16 runs scored.

He's scored a run in three straight games, but has just two hits over his last five games and 20 plate appearances. Smith has six walks and three runs scored in that span, so it's not all bad for him.

Smith is only starting against right-handed pitchers, so he was always a better deep-league fantasy asset anyways. Five games isn't quite enough for me to move on from him though, especially looking at how good his numbers still are after the recent cold stretch.

I'd keep rostering Smith in deeper leagues, just maybe benching him until he gets going at the plate again. He's at least worth a roster spot for another week or so, and then you can reassess things at that point.

Should You Drop Andrew Heaney?

Heaney is rostered in 77% of leagues after a 1.8% dropoff today.

He started on Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings against the Cubs. He took the loss, failed to register a strikeout and gave up two homers.

Heaney's numbers for the season still look fine. He has a 2.50 ERA and 2-2 record over six starts and 36 innings. Heaney has allowed 10 runs on 23 hits and nine walks, while striking out 31 batters.

He was a standard league keeper to some because of his hot start, but he was always due for regression after that start. More often than not, I'd view him as a deep-league keeper who can be streamed in standard leagues against weaker-hitting teams.

His next start is likely against a good San Diego lineup, and then he takes on a down (but still loaded) Braves' lineup after that maybe. I don't love Heaney for either of those starts, and would much rather he start in deeper leagues than standard ones.
