Is it Time to Drop Spencer Steer and Triston Casas in Fantasy Baseball Leagues?

Looking at several fantasy baseball drop candidates in the middle of the week.

After identifying some waiver wire hitters and pitchers to possibly add, let's look at droppable fantasy baseball players.

More droppable player data can be located on the waiver wire trends most dropped tab, which can be found on any fantasy baseball page here at FantasySP.

Should You Drop Matt Shaw?

Shaw was part of the headline on my last fantasy baseball drop story. We have a new development in his fantasy outlook, so he's worth talking about again.

Instead of letting the youngster battle through some of his offensive struggles, Chicago decided to send Shaw to the minor leagues for the time being.

In his first 18 MLB games, Shaw had a .172 average and .294 on-base percentage across 58 at-bats and 68 plate appearances. He homered and doubled twice among his 10 hits, drove in three runs and scored 11 times. Shaw also had 10 walks, which was encouraging to see, but also struck out 18 times.

Obviously, if he's not in the major leagues, standard league redraft fantasy owners don't have much reason to keep Shaw on their team. I'd drop Shaw and look for help now, instead of hoping he irons things out when he comes back up. We don't have the slightest clue when that might be, and stashing him until he's back in the big leagues would be a big risk to take.

In deeper redraft leagues, Shaw can still be held onto. But if you need his roster spot (in other words, your fantasy team has struggled so far), then dropping Shaw makes a ton of sense.

The only leagues where I'd say Shaw needs to be held onto in dynasty/keeper leagues. He's a highly-regarded hitting prospect, and I'm not giving up on him after just 18 MLB games. I'd guess he gets back up in the big leagues before June, if not sooner.

Should You Drop Easton Lucas?

Lucas was great in his first two starts before getting rocked in his third outing. It turned him from a potential keeper in all leagues to someone who is droppable and back to being a streaming option.

In starts against the Nationals and Red Sox, Lucas went 2-0 and didn't allow a run across 10 1/3 innings. He gave up four hits and three walks, while striking out 11.

Lucas started against the Blue Jays on Monday, working five innings. He allowed eight runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three. Lucas gave up three home runs, his first three of the season.

It was a definite bummer for the fantasy owners who picked up Lucas before that start. He was closing in on standard league keeper status, and now is squarely back on the streaming level.

Lucas has an upcoming start against the Mariners, which will be another great time to stream him. So I'm not a huge fan of dropping Lucas in deeper leagues, because he'll at least be usable in those leagues. I'd also say he should get some standard league streaming starts against Seattle, but he's not a keeper in those leagues and can be dropped until the day of his start.

After the Seattle start, a potential matchup against the Yankees could be next. That's not a matchup you'd want to try in standard leagues, and I think you'll be able to find better deeper options for that start.

I think Lucas will top out as a deep-league option this season. He will have standard league streaming value at times, but probably will fall short of being a keeper in those leagues.

Keep an eye on our daily streaming stories to see if Lucas is worth a start going forward.

Should You Drop Spencer Steer?

Steer has gotten off to a rough start at the plate, and is being dropped now as a result.

Across 13 games and 50 plate appearances, Steer has a .109 average and .180 OBP. He's got two doubles and a homer among his five total hits, along with three RBIs, four walks, five runs scored and 12 strikeouts.

Steer doesn't have a hit over his past four games, and only has walked and scored once in that span. He has four punchouts in that short span as well.

He was selected around pick 125 this year, so dropping him this early in the season is a bummer for those fantasy owners. Steer still has fantasy value because he can slot in at a couple positions, but he's definitely lost his fantasy appeal.

He has a .225 average and .319 OBP last season, so it's not like Steer is a .300 hitter. His fantasy value last year came with 20 homers, 92 RBIs, 25 stolen bases and 74 runs scored.

It's hard to give up on a player capable of those numbers, but he's definitely not worthy of starting in fantasy leagues right now, and shouldn't be owned in standard leagues for sure.

I'd hang on to Steer in deeper leagues, at least for another couple weeks. If his struggles continue, you can expect to see his own percentage keep falling. I doubt it drops below 40% if he's healthy and still playing everyday though.

If Steer gets dropped in your league, you should put Steer on your watch list. As last year showed, he's capable of being a daily fantasy starter. Steer should heat up at some point, and he'll be heavily added when that happens.

Should You Drop Jake Burger?

Burger was seen as a breakout candidate when he joined the Rangers. Instead, he's struggled to get his bat going, and is now being dropped in a lot of standard redraft leagues.

Burger is hitting just .151 and has a .182 OBP across his first 15 games and 55 plate appearances. He's got two doubles and two home runs among his eight total knocks, along with having seven RBIs, a walk, five runs scored and 15 strikeouts.

Burger has actually been better of late, with a hit in four straight games. He has just one RBI, no runs scored or walks and six strikeouts in that span though, so it still makes sense to drop him.

Burger was taken around pick 150 this year, so it's a bit easier to drop him than it was Steer. It's a similar case with both hitters though - if Burger gets dropped in your standard league, I'd keep close tabs on him in case he heats up.

I'd only consider dropping Burger in standard leagues right now, while holding him at least a couple more weeks in deeper leagues. He should heat up at some point, and when he does, his own percentage is going to grow rapidly.

Should You Drop Triston Casas?

Casas has battled injuries over the past couple years, so many fantasy owners highlighted him as a potential breakout star. So far, he's struggled mightily at the plate.

In 17 games and 66 plate appearances, Casas has a .180 average and .242 OBP. He has three doubles and a home run among his 11 total knocks, along with three RBIs, four walks, three runs scored and 18 strikeouts.

He's a career .244 hitter with a .349 OBP, so he's bound to heat up here soon. It's hard to justify rostering him in standard leagues right now (he's at 77% owned, and falling steadily).

He was taken around pick 150 as well, so it's a bit easier to move on from Casas, but he's another one to keep tabs on if he becomes available in your league. I still believe in Casas and think he will get going and be a good daily asset in all leagues.

Keep rostering Casas in deeper leagues, but maybe just bench him until he heats up again.
