Ryan Waldschmidt tearing up Triple-A while eyeing a return to the Diamondbacks

Waldschmidt is currently refining his approach with Triple-A Reno after being optioned in mid-June to find more consistent playing time. Since returning to the Aces, Arizona's top prospect has been on a tear, posting a 1.207 OPS and showing the dynamic power-speed blend that earned him a call-up in May. The Diamondbacks currently sit at 44-45 and third in the NL West, and while he is currently not on the active roster, his five steals and .259 batting average during his initial 33-game MLB stint show the foundation of a potential spark plug.

Our models project Waldschmidt to eventually provide a .265 batting average with a balanced profile of 8 home runs and 8 stolen bases over a full season. While his MLB slugging percentage was a modest .357 during his first taste of the majors, his recent minor league success against breaking balls suggests he is making the necessary adjustments to stick permanently. Given his elite prospect pedigree and the fact that he has already reached base at a .314 clip at the highest level, he remains a high-priority stash for the second half of the season.

The Diamondbacks have a full seven-game slate this week on the road against San Diego and the Dodgers. While our weekly projection of 13.5 fantasy points anticipates production based on a full slate of games, he would face a gauntlet of arms if recalled, including Yoshinobu Yamamoto and his elite 2.49 ERA. However, since he is not currently on the active depth chart for the third-place Diamondbacks, he cannot be used in standard weekly lineups. He is a premier hold in dynasty leagues but remains a Sit for now.
