Hey folks. Today, we're stepping away from the waiver wire grind and injuries and instead looking ahead to the next wave - the rookie class that has already dipped its toes into the NHL and is now setting the stage for what could be full breakout seasons.

These are not unknown names anymore, but they're still early enough in their careers that most fantasy managers haven't fully adjusted to their upside. We are talking about guys who have played a bit this season, and you should be looking out for in next year's draft. If you're in a keeper league, stash them now or put them at the top of your list for next season.

Each one of them has already made an impressive splash and instead of waiting and hoping for them to debut early season - you're further ahead as you have seen what they can do in the show - even if it's a smaller sample size.

And again, what makes this group interesting is that each player has already shown flashes at the NHL level this season, whether through powerplay usage, scoring touch, or immediate offensive involvement. As we head into next year, these are the kinds of rookies who can go from depth watch list names to full-time fantasy assets much faster than expected - let's dive in and take a look at what our focused prospects have accomplished so far this season.

Cole Hutson - Washington Capitals

Hutson has already generated serious buzz as one of the most dynamic young defensemen entering the league, and now with a three-year entry level contract signed with the Washington Capitals, the runway for a full-time NHL role is officially open. He arrives with legitimate pedigree from Boston University, where he led his team in assists and points as a sophomore and continued to show why he's been viewed as a high-end offensive defensemen from the moment he stepped into college hockey.

There's also the family angle that immediately stands out. As the younger brother of elite NHL defensemen Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens, the comparison is unavoidable - and in Cole's case, it's fair to say the offensive instincts run in the family. Both players are undersized, both play with pace and deception, and both process the game at a high level offensively from the back end. The difference is simply where they are in their development timeline, not the ceiling of their skillset.

What makes Cole especially intriguing from a fantasy perspective is how quickly his skill has translated at every level. He was already producing at a high rate in college, led major offensive categories at BU, and has shown he can drive play in international competition - including standout performances at the World Junior level. That type of resume suggests a player who isn't just adjusting to higher levels of play - he's actively dictating them.

Now the question becomes usage, and whether Washington leans into his offensive toolkit early. If he earns meaningful powerplay deployment, he immediately enters the conversation as one of the more interesting rookie defensemen to monitor for both points and shots on goal volume. For now, he profiles as a high-upside offensive defender whose fantasy value will be tightly tied to opportunity, but the talent level is clearly already NHL caliber.

Hutson has three goals, seven assists, and six powerplay points in 13 games played as a defensemen. He also has 21 shots on goal, 13 hits, and four blocked shots.

Anton Frondell - Chicago Blackhawks

Frondell has already made a strong early impression at the NHL level with the Chicago Blackhawks, but what really sets his profile apart is how complete his game looks for an 18-year-old stepping into a pro environment. There's a maturity to his play that shows up immediately - he doesn't look like he's surviving shifts, he looks like he belongs.

A big part of that reputation was built on his international performance, where he played a major role in helping Sweden capture gold at the World Juniors. In that setting, Frondell didn't just contribute, he looked like a player already comfortable in high pressure, best-on-best situations. That tournament success carried over directly into how scouts and organizations now view him: not as a long-term project, but as a near term impact player.

At 6-foot-1, 198 pounds, he also brings a physical readiness that's rare for teenagers. He plays a heavy, pro style game - engages in battles, finishes checks, and doesn't shy away from contact - while still maintaining strong puck skill and offensive awareness. Early NHL looks have already reflected that balance, with strong shot generation and steady involvement in all three zones.

The projection here is starting to get loud for a reason. There's already belief he could push into a top six forward role sooner rather than later with Chicago, and if that happens, the offensive ceiling jumps quickly. Even in limited NHL exposure, he's shown enough pace, structure, and competitiveness to suggest he won't need a long adjustment period. This is exactly the kind of rookie who can go from “interesting debut” to “every night fantasy option” faster than expected.

Frondell joins the ranks of the young core in Chi-Town such as franchise cornerstone forward Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, and defensemen Sam Rinzel. The future looks bright in the windy city, and Fondell may just be the next piece that elevates the franchise back into dynasty status.

Frondell has three goals, six assists, and two powerplay points in 10 games played as a forward. He also has 30 shots on goal, eight hits, and 11 blocked shots.

Ilya Protas - Washington Capitals

Protas has been one of the more fascinating late season call-ups to emerge within the Washington Capitals system, not just because of his production path, but because of how quickly he's climbed through each level without looking overwhelmed. From dominating the OHL, to putting up big numbers in the AHL, to now earning NHL looks, the transition has felt almost seamless for a player still just 19 years old.

There's also a rare and compelling storyline driving his early NHL opportunity - he's currently playing alongside his brother, Aliaksei Protas, on the second line. That kind of family connection at the NHL level isn't just a feel good moment - it can actively stabilize a young player's adjustment. Having a familiar linemate, especially a direct bloodline who understands your tendencies, can smooth over a lot of the typical rookie growing pains.

What stands out in Protas's game is just how physically imposing and offensively skilled he already is for his age. He's a massive forward who doesn't play like a prospect - he plays like someone who expects to drive offense. His OHL production was elite, his AHL numbers translated immediately, and even in brief NHL action he's shown he can handle pace and create chances without hesitation.

From a projection standpoint, there's a legitimate argument that he may end up being one of the better value picks from his draft range. The combination of size, skill, and rapid progression suggests a player whose ceiling hasn't even been touched yet. And with the added chemistry factor of playing alongside his brother, there's a real opportunity for him to settle into a consistent NHL role faster than most prospects his age.

Protas has one goal, three assists, and one powerplay point in three games played as a forward. He also has six shots on goal, zero hits, and one blocked shot.

Porter Martone - Philadelphia Flyers

Martone has wasted almost no time making his presence felt with the Philadelphia Flyers, stepping into a tough environment and immediately looking like he belongs in an NHL top six role. On a team still trying to find consistent identity and structure, he's been one of the few young players to bring both stability and noticeable impact shift to shift so far in his short stint playing in the show.

What stands out right away is how complete his early game has looked. He's generating strong shot volume, playing with a physical edge, and contributing offensively at a pace that suggests he's not just surviving at this level - he's actively driving play. For a player this early in his NHL career, that combination of confidence and engagement is usually a strong indicator that the transition is already ahead of schedule.

Even in a small sample, Martone has forced his way into meaningful deployment. He's holding down a top six role while also seeing time on the second powerplay unit, which speaks to how quickly the coaching staff has trusted his game. It's probably best that John Tortorella has moved on, as we know he heavily favors veteran players - which will not have provided Martone the opportunities he has been given so far.

More importantly, he doesn't look out of place in those minutes - he looks comfortable, which is often the hardest hurdle for young power forwards to clear.

Looking ahead, the projection is starting to get very clear. He already profiles like a long-term mainstay for the Flyers, and this late-season audition feels less like a trial and more like a confirmation. With his blend of size, intelligence, and physicality, Martone is trending toward becoming one of the foundational young pieces in Philadelphia sooner rather than later. And this is something they desperately need after Matvei Michkov took such a significant step backwards in progression this season.

Martone has three goals, four assists, and three powerplay points in seven games played as a forward. He also has 27 shots on goal, 11 hits, and two blocked shots.
