Hey folks. Columbus made a notable change behind the bench, signaling a potential shift in structure, accountability, and on ice deployment. Coaching changes can quietly reshape fantasy value, particularly when usage patterns have gone stale. Even subtle adjustments to ice time and special teams can open buy-low opportunities or create unexpected short-term value.

The focus then turns to the injury list, where several situations demand close attention. An offensive defensemen has been placed on injured reserve, removing a key source of points and powerplay production, a young dynamo traveling with their team hints at an imminent return, while an injury-prone goaltender once again finds himself on injured reserve, forcing difficult roster decisions.

Let's dive right into this information-packed piece today.

Columbus Coaching Change

The Blue Jackets have officially moved on from their previous head coach Dean Evason, and brought in a highly experienced NHL coach in Rick Bowness to take the reins. Management's decision comes with a clear message: the current status quo isn't cutting it and it's time to push toward relevance rather than tread water.

What makes this new hire notable in a fantasy context is the sheer volume of experience he brings. He is one of the most tenured coaches in league history, with well over four decades of NHL work behind him, including multiple playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup Final run. That background suggests a coach who knows how to structure effective systems, manage game flow, and get the most out of his roster - what many around the league refer to as the classic “coaching bump.”

Columbus's record this season has fallen short of expectations, leaving them at the bottom of their division and well back of a playoff spot despite a surprisingly strong campaign the year before. Management made this move now because they believe the club is closer than its record suggests and that, with the right leadership, this group can start trending up rather than continuing to slide.

From a fantasy perspective, the timing is important. A veteran head coach who emphasizes structure and defensive responsibility could tighten up mediocre stretches, stabilize special teams, and provide clearer usage patterns that fantasy managers can trust. That often translates to more predictable ice time, steadier powerplay roles, and ideally increased production from emerging scorers and top tier contributors who were underutilized or inconsistent under the previous regime.

Columbus has already solved current and future goaltending with Jet Greaves, they have an unexpected elite scorer in Kirill Marchenko, and have one of the best defensemen in the league in Zach Werenski. The time is now for this rebuild to start pushing forward, and the Blue Jackets believe that Bowness is the man to lead the charge.

Greaves has 13 wins in 30 games started as a goaltender. He also has a .908 save percentage, 2.71 goals against average, and zero shutouts.

Marchenko has 16 goals, 21 assists, and 13 powerplay points in 41 games played as a forward. He also has 131 shots on goal, 34 hits, and 26 blocked shots.

Werenski has 16 goals, 31 assists, and 11 powerplay points in 41 games played as a defensemen. He also has 150 shots on goal, 19 hits, and 57 blocked shots.

Erik Karlsson - Pittsburgh Penguins

EK65 has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, sidelining one of Pittsburgh's most important offensive drivers from the back end. While it's unclear exactly when the injury occurred, the expectation is that he'll miss at least a couple of weeks, which makes this more than a day-to-day situation but not one that should cause long-term concern.

Before landing on injured reserve, EK65 had been contributing steadily despite a modest goal total. One goal over his last 12 games doesn't jump off the page, but seven assists during that stretch highlight his continued ability to generate offense and quarterback the powerplay. His heavy usage and playmaking remain central to Pittsburgh's push to stay in the playoff mix.

From a fantasy perspective, this is a straightforward stash. The projected absence is manageable, and his offensive upside from the blue line is difficult to replace. Managers with injured reserve flexibility should hold firm, while those in shallower formats will need to weigh short-term survival against the reality that comparable offensive defensemen rarely emerge on waivers.

Karlsson has four goals, 29 assists, and 13 powerplay points in 44 games played as a defensemen. He also has 94 shots on goal, 10 hits, and 40 blocked shots.

Will Smith - San Jose Sharks

Smith is trending in the right direction as he works back from an upper-body injury, currently considered day-to-day and traveling with the team on their four-game road trip. That detail matters for fantasy purposes, as teams rarely bring injured players on extended trips unless a return is imminent. He has also progressed in practice, shedding the non-contact jersey, which is typically the final hurdle before rejoining the lineup.

The potential fantasy intrigue ramps up if Smith slots back in alongside franchise forward Macklin Celebrini. That pairing has been a focal point of the Sharks' long-term plans, and even in small samples, the chemistry has been evident. For fantasy managers, this isn't just about Smith's individual value - his return could also elevate the production of those skating with him, especially in offensive situations and on the powerplay.

Fantasy wise, Smith is a strong stash in most formats and a speculative add in deeper leagues if managers can afford the roster spot. His return timeline appears short, and the upside of immediate top line and number one powerplay usage alongside elite young talent makes him worth holding through the uncertainty. Keep a close eye on lineup reports heading into the opening game of the road trip, as confirmation of his return would make him a near must start in keeper and dynasty formats.

Smith has 12 goals, 17 assists, and eight powerplay points in 33 games played as a forward. He also has 80 shots on goal, seven hits, and seven blocked shots.

Thatcher Demko - Vancouver Canucks

Demko has once again landed on injured reserve with a lower-body issue, continuing a frustrating pattern for the Canucks. The timing is particularly unfortunate, as he will miss at least the next four games, starting with Monday's road matchup against Montreal, and it's currently unclear when he'll be ready to return.

From a fantasy perspective, this is a clear red flag. Demko's injury history already makes him a risky asset, and this latest stint on injured reserve underscores the volatility in relying on him for consistent starts or wins. For now, goaltender Kevin Lankinen will secure the majority of the spots yet again in the crease, so he should be an easy waver wire replacement for Demko, although his numbers are far from stellar. This is a volume pickup, at best.

Managers in deeper formats or those holding multiple goaltenders should consider replacing Demko temporarily and monitoring updates closely. Those without injured reserve spots may need to move quickly, as his return timeline is uncertain and there is no guarantee he will resume a full workload immediately upon return. His value in fantasy formats is now highly speculative until more clarity emerges on his recovery.

Demko has eight wins in 20 games started as a goaltender. He also has an .897 save percentage, 2.9 goals against average, and one shutout.

Lankinen has six wins in 20 games started as a goaltender. He also has an .883 save percentage, 3.4 goals against average, and zero shutouts.
