Fantasy Baseball Outfield Breakdown: Top Producers, Busts and Trade Targets

Top Outfielders

Houston's Yordan Alvarez is the top fantasy outfielder at the moment - he'd be the top fantasy hitter overall if not for two-way star Shohei Ohtani. Alvarez has been stellar all season, and most fantasy owners are going to want to enjoy his success. Alvarez has an injury history though, so it's at least tempting to sell high on the Astros' outfielder.

Washington's James Wood is the No. 2 fantasy outfielder, according to ESPN scoring settings right now. He strikes out a bunch, but he makes up for it with well-rounded numbers otherwise. If you can get a big return and it helps your team overall, that's about the only way I'd part with Wood.

New York Yankees' Cody Bellinger is the No. 3 fantasy OF right now. He's had big seasons in the past, but I don't see him sticking in the top three all year. I'd definitely be looking to sell Bellinger high, especially because he can also play first base, which just adds fantasy value to his name.

Jordan Walker of the Cardinals is the No. 4 fantasy outfielder at this point of the season. That's a big surprise to many, and it makes Walker a sell-high candidate as well. Walker could finally be breaking out, so I understand some holding Walker and hoping he keeps producing big for them.

New York Yankees' Aaron Judge is the No. 5 fantasy outfielder right now. He's a familiar name, and has the best chance of any top-five guy right now of sticking in the top five all season. I'd only trade Judge away for a massive return.

Because there's so many outfielders, let's quickly run over the next five fantasy outfielders so far this season, so Nos. 6-10.

Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout is in sixth, while Los Angeles Dodgers' Andy Pages is seventh. Arizona's Corbin Carroll sits in eighth, while Seattle's Randy Arozarena is ninth. St. Louis' Alec Burleson is another surprising name and he rounds out the top 10.

Struggling Outfielders

Atlanta's Ronald Acuna Jr. was a borderline first-round pick in most fantasy baseball drafts this year, yet he sits outside the top-50 fantasy outfielders right now. Some of that is due to injury, so hopefully he can stay healthy and regain value in time, but Acuna has been underwhelming and a bit of a draft bust so far.

San Diego's Fernando Tatis Jr. has struggled to provide pop this season, and he also sits outside the top-50 outfielders so far. Tatis went before pick 15 on average, so he's been a big disappointment so far. We'll see if his bat ever gets going.

Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio is outside the top-50 fantasy outfielders at the moment, although a long absence to start the season is the biggest reason behind that. The injury was revealed near Opening Day and it handcuffed fantasy owners. Chourio is starting to gain back value, but he has a lot of ground to make up after being a top-35 pick overall.

Athletics' Brent Rooker is another player who has disappointed this season, with an injury also not helping his cause. He's underperformed when healthy though, so Rooker has been a fantasy bust so far. We'll see if he can make up for lost time and provide his fantasy owners with better value going forward.

Position Fantasy Outlook

The fantasy outfield position is loaded, especially if your league doesn't distinguish between left, center and right fielders.

There's so many options to choose from, and there will be a ton of movement on the fantasy leaderboard before the 2026 season comes to a close.

It means that outfielders shouldn't be a big need for many fantasy teams out there. Those that need outfielders should get pretty good value on anyone they target in the outfield, as fantasy values are a bit lower for players at loaded positions.

Try going for proven guys, like Alvarez, Wood, Bellinger, Judge, Trout and Carroll over surprisingly good assets like Walker, Pages or Burleson. Some of those proven guys cost more, but they will be better additions to your team in the long run.

If you have more than enough fantasy outfielders, look to trade some guys away to help you acquire hitters at positions of need, or pitching help.

Just because outfielders are aplenty doesn't mean other fantasy owners won't jump at the chance to add a high-end fantasy player. Judging your fantasy outfielders and the overall state of your team really determines whether or not you need to hold or move your current outfielders.

Remember, there are plenty of options available, so be willing to add/drop or trade outfielders all season.
