With every team having close to 40 games remaining, each division in baseball is within 7.5 games at the top. It's unlikely that a team will overcome a seven-plus-game deficit at this point, but there are plenty of games left to flip any of the division races, even before we reach September. All it takes is one week to change the fortunes of any team near the playoff race (for better and worse).

Let's look at four starting pitchers in action on Wednesday who are widely available in fantasy leagues and have good matchups. Most stats are from MLB.com, as are the probable starters. The full streamer rankings are listed at the bottom.

Jake Irvin, Washington Nationals @ Kansas City Royals

Irvin is decent with walks but a below-average strikeout pitcher. His K% is especially low this season, sitting at 15.6% versus his 2024 rate of 20.3%, his career rate of 18.4%, and league average around 22.5%. He has also been susceptible to the home run, giving up a homer every 5.2 innings (against his career number of one every 5.9 innings, which still isn't great but is better). Add together fewer strikeouts, more hits, and more home runs, and it's clear why Irvin's ERA is pushing toward 5.00.

Kansas City won't hit home runs or walk, but they also don't strike out, leaving a lower ceiling for opposing pitchers in fantasy. The Royals are right near the middle in terms of base hits and batting average, but they are sitting at bottom-five levels in too many areas to find consistent success, leaving them among the bottom three in runs scored.

Irvin is a low-to-mid-level streamer. The matchup puts him here, as the Royals have been poor enough to be enticing for almost any pitcher, but Irvin's own performance hasn't been good enough to trust.

Michael McGreevy, St. Louis Cardinals vs. Colorado Rockies

The best matchup of the day goes to McGreevy, the third straight Cardinals pitcher to end up on the streaming list against the Rockies. Colorado is the worst team overall, has a bottom-five lineup, and might have the worst pitching staff in the league, though Coors Field plays into that. There aren't many bright spots; at least they only have about six weeks left.

McGreevy is only 68 innings into his career, but he has been as good with walks as any pitcher you'll see. He has only walked nine hitters in that time, a miniscule 3.3% rate. He is also a below-average strikeout pitcher but putting that few guys on base is a great way to limit runs when the big hits come. While it will take some time before we truly know what McGreevy will be as a pro, he has shown enough to project as at least a middling guy, a group that makes a ton of money in this league.

McGreevy is a mid-level streamer. Colorado has drawn the second-fewest walks, so the over/under on this one might be 0.5 walks from the starting pitcher. His lower strikeouts do cap his ceiling just a bit, but the matchup is pristine.

Eury Perez, Miami Marlins @ Cleveland Guardians

I listed Perez here before his most recent start against Atlanta, thinking he could be in line for a nice start against a team that has struggled all year. Well, the Braves hit three home runs off Perez and scored five runs in 5 1/3 innings. Most surprisingly, Perez only struck out one hitter. He is generally well above average with Ks, so there's a good chance for him to bounce back here in that area if nothing else.

Cleveland won nine of 10 before losing to the White Sox on Sunday and have played themselves into a good position in the wild card and even within shouting distance of the division after being back double-digit games for much of the season. The Guardians have bottom-10 offensive numbers over the full season, but they have been much better over the last month and might have played themselves off the streaming list. They are more of a fringe target now but show up today both because of Perez's talent and because we are a little short on other streaming options.

Perez is a mid-level streamer. The strikeouts give him a high ceiling, and Perez has been very good limiting hits and runs also. I don't love the matchup, but this is a situation where it's worth considering Perez if he's free in your league (owned in around 50%).

Cam Schlittler, New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins

Schlittler has thrown just 24 2/3 innings over five starts in his first season in the majors. A seventh-round pick in 2022, Schlittler did good work in the minors, including a 3.33 ERA and 303 strikeouts in 243 1/3 innings. He has been good with Ks in the big leagues while walking a few too many guys, but Schlittler has the makings of a successful pitcher.

The Twins haven't bottomed out the way they could have after shipping out about half of their big-league roster at the trade deadline. Minnesota is 5-6 since the deadline before Tuesday's result, actually a better rate than their season-long performance (56-63). I'm still betting on the downside, and the Twins are a team I'm happy to target when the circumstances are right.

Schlittler is a low-to-mid-level streamer. The strikeouts are promising, but Schlittler has no track record, and it's hard to know what to expect right now. Minnesota also hasn't been as bad in the time since the deadline as I thought they might be, making them more of a middling matchup until further notice.
