Analyzing More MLB Trade Deadline Deals: Chris Paddack, Carlos Carrasco and More

Morgan assesses three MLB trades from Monday from a fantasy baseball perspective.

A couple more MLB trades happened on Monday, so we're back to cover them here.

Here's the last MLB trade article we did, which links back to last week's couple trade stories as well.

Tigers Acquire Two Pitchers

Detroit bolstered its rotation by landing Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak from Minnesota. The move made more sense when Reese Olson was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.

Enrique Jimenez was the player Detroit sent to Minnesota in the deal.

Paddack is rostered in 13% of leagues, and is slightly trending up after the trade. Dobnak isn't rostered in many leagues synced here at FantasySP, and neither is Jimenez, a prospect.

Paddack is 3-9 with a 4.95 earned run average over 111 innings so far this season. He's struck out 83 batters and walked 27. Paddack has allowed 65 runs (61 earned) and 115 hits.

He's been inconsistent throughout the season, with his month of July being a perfect example. Paddack allowed two runs over five innings against the Rays in his first start, then surrendered six runs over five innings against the Cubs and five runs over five frames against the Rockies. He's coming off a great start against the Dodgers, allowing a run over six innings.

Paddack's fantasy outlook gets a boost by playing for a better team, and I like his chances of improving his ERA and overall numbers on a Tigers' pitching staff that seems to get the best out of pitchers. He might not ever be more than a deep-league keeper, but he could eventually get into standard league streaming territory, so his game logs are worth watching over the next couple starts.

Dobnak might not have a spot in the big leagues, like Paddack should, but he's at least a depth option.

He's pitched in just one big league game this season, allowing a run on two hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings against the Cardinals on March 30. He struck out one in that contest.

Dobnak has a 7.12 ERA over 60 2/3 innings at Triple-A since then, so it's easy to see why he hasn't been called back up. He'd likely only get MLB starts with Detroit if there were a couple more injuries, but I at least wanted to mention him so you can keep him on your radar, especially in really deep leagues.

Jimenez is the Twins' new No. 20 prospect. The 19-year-old catcher is playing in the FCL and has a 2029 ETA.

He has a .255 average and .363 on-base percentage over 137 games in three years. Jimenez has 30 homers, six triples and 10 homers among his 117 total hits, along with 73 runs scored, 68 RBIs, 75 walks, 12 stolen bases and 116 strikeouts.

Jimenez has some dynasty appeal, but only should be rostered in extremely deep setups. He's several years away from a potential MLB appearance, but he could be worth adding in a couple years if his numbers stick or improve a bit.

Brewers Land a Catcher

Milwaukee acquired Danny Jansen from the Tampa Bay Rays, sending prospect Jadher Areinamo in return. In a move to open up a roster spot, the Brewers designated Eric Haase for assignment.

Jansen is owned in just 3% of fantasy leagues, and that's not likely to change all that much, because William Contreras starts just about every day for Milwaukee. Jansen is at least worth discussing if a contending team is willing to trade for him.

Jansen has played in 73 games and logged 259 plate appearances this season. He has a .204 average and .314 OBP, along with 29 RBIs, 28 runs scored, 33 walks and 68 strikeouts.

He's only played catcher in the major leagues, so it seems unlikely that he'd play anywhere else in the field. If his bat heats up, he could get some starts as the designated hitter.

I'm not sure I really understand this deal for the Brewers, because Haase has performed better than Jansen, albeit in a very limited role. Over 30 games and 77 plate appearances this season, Haase has a .229 average and .289 OBP. He has three doubles and two homers among his 16 total hits, along with nine RBIs, 11 runs scored, four walks and 31 strikeouts.

You can see by Haase's games played mark that backup catchers don't play much in Milwaukee. Contreras has been battling a finger injury all year, but he just refuses to sit, and that is likely to be the case with Jansen too.

Areinamo was the Brewers' No. 24 prospect, so it was a decent return for the Rays. He's not ranked in a stacked Tampa Bay organization.

The 21-year-old has been playing in High-A and is just 21 years old. He has a .297 average and .355 OBP over 94 games and 415 plate appearances this season. Areinamo has 109 total hits, including 24 doubles, 11 homers and two triples, along with 51 RBIs and runs scored, 34 walks, 15 stolen bases and 48 strikeouts.

While he might not be ranked in his new organization, his numbers this season, and over his minor league career, make Areinamo a prospect to keep tabs on. He's likely a couple years away from a potential debut, but if he continues to deliver at the plate, he could eventually become a better prospect and MLB starter.

He's still only worth rostering in deeper dynasty setups, but he's one of the better prospects who has been dealt so far. Again, I'm not sure why Milwaukee made this trade, because I thought Haase was performing better than Jansen, and I think Tampa Bay won this trade, even with Areinamo being several years off from a potential MLB debut.

Braves Secure Another Arm

Atlanta added another pitcher to its roster by trading for Carlos Carrasco. The Braves sent the Yankees cash in the deal.

Carrasco isn't owned in many fantasy leagues, but he could get some fantasy attention if he excels in his time on the hill.

He's expected to start for Atlanta on Thursday against the Reds, which is a decent matchup. Carrasco would only be a streaming option in the deepest of fantasy leagues, but he's at least an option.

Carrasco made six starts over eight appearances with New York this season. He went 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA over 32 innings. Carrasco allowed 21 runs on 39 hits and 10 walks, while striking out 25 batters.

He's been an above-average starter in the past, but those days are well in the past for the now 38-year-old. Atlanta has a need for starting pitchers, and Carrasco is at least going to fill a rotation spot for a few starts, so he's at least worth mentioning.

I'm a bit surprised that the Yankees continue to deal pitchers away, because that's their biggest need in my eyes. I'd expect New York to add a couple pitchers before the deadline is up.

So all in all, we had three more lower-impact fantasy baseball trades that went through on Monday. Things should continue to pick up over the next couple days, so hopefully we get some bigger deals soon.
