Fantasy Baseball Week 14 Waiver Wire Pickups: Reid Detmers, Marcell Ozuna, and More!

Nick Roberts Jul 10th 10:31 AM EDT.

Fourth of July is always one of my favorite times of the year. Cook-outs. Baseball. Swimming. Carnivals. Basically, that awesome scene from The Sandlot.

While we won’t find The Great Hambino on the waiver wire, Week 14 still has some good gems out there for us to scoop up.  We’re more than halfway through the fantasy baseball season, so it’s time to start making up some ground (or holding it).

With no time to spare, let’s dive in and take a look at the Week 14 Fantasy Baseball Waivers.

As always, check out the fantasy assistant for personalized waiver wire recommendations and team analysis. Make moves based on projections, strengths and weaknesses, waiver alerts, and lots more.

Top Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Adds

(ownership percentages are based on ESPN leagues)

Reid Detmers, P, Los Angeles Angels (52.6%)

I don’t love to include players who are above 50 percent, but it’s worth writing about Reid Detmers if he’s still available in over 47 percent of ESPN leagues. Detmers is only 1-5 on the season with a 3.77 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 94 strikeouts in 82.1 innings. Nothing that special, right? Well, Detmers has allowed 1 or less runs in four of his last five starts. And he’s struck out at least eight batters in each of those five games. With a 2.05 ERA and .167 batting average allowed in June, the 23-year-old seems to be figuring things out and is most definitely worth an add if he’s available in your fantasy league.

Ezequiel Duran, 3B/SS/OF, Texas Rangers (32.9%)

I won’t lie, I have Duran on the fantasy baseball team I most pay attention to and haven’t looked at his ownership percentages in weeks. I was absolutely shocked to see him at 32.9 percent. Outside of being able to play three fantasy positions, Duran is hitting .314 on the season with 35 runs, 12 home runs, 34 RBI, and four steals. The 24-year-old hit .349 during the month of June while adding five home runs. If he’s available in your league, he’s a must-add.

Marcell Ozuna, OF, Atlanta Braves (20.0%)

Ozuna is having an underrated good season and is currently hitting .251 with 35 runs, 16 home runs, and 39 RBI. I don’t love to play the “double his first half numbers” game, but that would more or less put Ozuna on pace for a .250 average with around 70 runs, 30 home runs, and 75 RBI. While not a fantasy league-winning stat line, 30 home run hitters don’t exactly grow on trees, and Ozuna is on pace to push that number. The 32-year-old has hit .297 and .321 in May and June, respectively while adding 14 home runs over those two months combined. If Ozuna didn’t hit .091 during the month of April (something that doesn’t matter at this point during the season), he’d be up at 60-70 percent ownership.

Jeimer Candelario, 3B, Washington Nationals (13.7%)

Candelario has always been a solid-yet-unspectacular player, but he never got much attention while playing in Detroit. He hasn’t quite improved his profile in Washington, but he’s finally starting to put things together at 29 years old and is on the way to having the best season of his career. At .264 with 40 runs, 10 home runs, 38 RBI, and four steals, Candelario has been a solid and steady presence for his fantasy managers. He’s been consistent from month to month and should continue to deliver a second half similar to his first half.

Bryan Woo, P, Seattle Mariners (10.8%)

Woo had a rough first Major League start in allowing six runs to the Texas Rangers in two innings. However, Woo has been pretty darn good ever since and is worth keeping on your radar (or adding in deeper leagues). Over his last four starts, he’s only allowed five total runs and struck out seven in three of those four games. He’s struggled against lefties thus far, but he’s held righties to a .143 batting average thus far. While the 23-year-old hasn’t gone past the sixth inning in any of his starts, his arrow is pointing up with a 12.7 K/9 rate and a spot in the Giants’ rotation (at least for now).
