Logan Evans Undergoes Tommy John Surgery — Fantasy Baseball Impact on the Mariners' Rotation
Seattle loses a young arm for the 2026 season — here’s how the injury impacts the Mariners and fantasy managers.
The past several days have been all about discussing prospects when it comes to fantasy baseball coverage here at FantasySP. Injury news dropped this afternoon, so let's shift our focus and discuss that injury.
We will be discussing Seattle starting pitcher Logan Evans. Let's get right into it.
Fantasy baseball injury news can be tracked all season on FantasySP.
Evans' Injury and Early Stats
It was revealed that the right-handed pitcher underwent Tommy John surgery last week and will miss the entire 2026 season now.
On a positive note, the timing of the injury could mean he's ready to go for the 2027 season. It'll be a while until we learn of his exact return date though.
Evans is just 24 years old and made his MLB debut in 2025. He made 16 appearances (15 starts), covering 81 1/3 innings. Evans went 6-5 with a 4.32 earned run average.
Evans allowed 45 runs (39 earned) on 82 hits and 31 walks. He struck out 59 batters along the way.
He posted good numbers on his rise through the minor leagues. Evans had a 3.52 ERA over 166 innings, with 158 strikeouts along the way.
Evans will now miss the 2026 season, and hopefully not too much after that. It's a bummer after showing glimpses of good/great pitching in 2025.
There were six appearances in which he allowed a run or less, and three more games with only two runs allowed. Evans would have had a much better ERA if not for a pair of six-run outings.
Anyways, losing a young pitcher for a whole year is a blow to the Mariners, and for Evans himself.
Evans' Outlook
Of course, Evans should not be rostered in redraft leagues of any type for 2026. Hopefully you didn't already have your draft and picked him.
Evans is still a good asset in dynasty leagues, but losing him for the season could be a blow to some fantasy teams. Hopefully you have an IR spot to stash him in, otherwise you will have to try to stash him on the end of your bench for an entire year, or maybe more.
Most pitchers are able to bounce back after Tommy John surgery, and hopefully Evans can too. He's young enough where this shouldn't derail his career, but it does slow the progress he's made to this point.
With all that in mind, I'd still want to hold on to Evans through the injury. It's a good time to buy low on him, especially if your team is retooling and maybe isn't likely to win a fantasy title in 2026.
Getting Evans now could set you up for more success down the road, especially if he comes back stronger, which a good amount of pitchers do.
Mariners' Outlook
Most teams cannot afford to lose a starting pitcher, and while this will definitely hurt Seattle, it has more than enough other starting options to get by this season.
Right now, the Mariners' rotation is likely to be comprised of Bryan Woo, Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, George Kirby and Bryce Miller. It was going to be tough for Evans to crack that rotation anyways.
What the Evans' injury does is reduce the amount of depth options after the starting five though. Castillo and Woo were the only ones to make 30 or more starts last season - Gilbert made 25 starts, while Kirby made 23 and Miller just 18.
The only other pitcher who made more starts than Evans was Emerson Hancock, who is now maybe the top starting pitcher replacement if a member of the starting five were to miss time.
Cooper Criswell and Blas Castano are a couple starting options on the 40-man roster. Criswell is projected to open as the team's long reliever, but an injury could thrust him into the rotation right away now.
Seattle might not even need to make an outside move to bring in more starting pitchers, as there's plenty of good pitching prospects in the organization.
We probably have a bit better chance to see switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje this coming season. He has a 2026 ETA, and if a couple injuries hit, we could see him get called up. I'd guess Cijntje would be a heavily sought after fantasy asset, just for that fact that he's a switch-pitcher, so keep him in mind and be ready to pounce if injuries plague the Mariners' rotation more.
Randy Dobnak, Dane Dunning, Casey Lawrence, Gabe Mosser, Michael Morales, Ryan Sloan, Teddy McGraw, Kade Anderson and Cijntje are all non-roster invitees, so there's other options for the rotation if one of the starting five goes down before the regular season hits.
All-in-all, Seattle should be just fine after the Evans' injury, but if injuries persist, that's when the Mariners could be hurting. Luckily, the team has depth and is powered by its pitching staff.
