Notable Fantasy Baseball Players to Debut of Late: Colson Montgomery, Jack Perkins and More
Morgan discusses four young MLB players who have made their debuts recently.
There's been a few MLB players who have debuted over the past few weeks and performed well at the big league level.
Let's go over some of them in this article and discuss their fantasy baseball outlooks.
Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.
Colson Montgomery - White Sox
Montgomery was called up over the weekend, and performed well in his first three big league games. He's rostered in 9% of fantasy baseball leagues.
On July 4, he had a walk and strikeout over four plate appearances. He posted three hits, including a triple, on Saturday, while also driving in a run. Montgomery had two more hits, a walk, an RBI and a strikeout on Sunday.
His .500 average and .583 on-base percentage over his first three games is a good sign for the highly-regarded prospect. He's ranked 95th overall on the MLB's top-100 prospect list.
Montgomery has a 55 overall grade, with 55 marks for his power, arm and fielding as well. He has a 45 mark for his running and a 40 for his hitting.
He is 23 years old, was drafted No. 22 overall in 2021 and bats left-handed. Montgomery is a shortstop, but has played some third base in the minor leagues as well.
Over five minor league seasons, Montgomery has a .246 average and .364 OBP. Among his 341 hits, he has 48 homers, 69 doubles and 10 triples. Montgomery has 186 RBIs, 221 runs scored, 213 walks, 411 strikeouts and 15 stolen bases as well over 376 career games.
Montgomery hasn't delivered in the minor leagues like most scouts expected, but the White Sox decided to give him a chance at the big leagues anyways. What does Chicago have to lose?
Montgomery has performed very well in his first couple games, and should get some more fantasy attention as a result. He's just a deep-league option at this point, but I'm surprised his own percentage isn't higher.
He's a better option in dynasty/keeper leagues, but could gain redraft traction in a hurry. I'd already be adding him in some deeper redraft leagues, even if it was just to stash him on my bench for a little while.
Montgomery likely won't become a huge fantasy asset in standard leagues, but he's worth tracking in case he excels in the big leagues.
Yanquiel Fernandez - Rockies
Fernandez got called up to the big leagues earlier last week. He's at 3% rostered.
He's appeared in four games so far, starting each of one them. All those starts came against right-handed pitchers.
Fernandez has four hits, including a double, among his 13 plate appearances. He has an RBI and run scored, no walks and two strikeouts so far.
Fernandez is the team's No. 5 prospect. He has a 50 overall grade, with 60 grades in power and for his arm. Fernandez has a 50 mark for his fielding, a 45 for his hitting and a 40 for his running.
He's 22 years old, was signed by Colorado in 2019 and bats and throws left-handed.
In his five minor league seasons, Fernandez has a .279 average and .336 OBP. Across 469 games, he has 506 hits, including 77 home runs, 113 doubles and nine triples. Fernandez has 338 RBIs, 268 runs scored, 151 walks, seven stolen bases and 404 strikeouts.
Him not starting against left-handed pitchers is going to limit his fantasy outlook and value over time, but if he's delivering against righties, then Fernandez can at least be a deep-league fantasy option. He's batted eighth or ninth in the lineup across his starts so far.
He's done some solid things at the plate, and could move up the lineup over time. Fernandez is a player to keep tabs on, even if you don't feel like adding him right now.
I'd say Fernandez is worth adding in some deeper fantasy leagues right now though. Again, he's a better dynasty/keeper asset, but he has a little redraft value already, and it will only grow with more solid results at the plate.
Andry Lara - Nationals
Lara made a brief MLB appearance before being sent back to Double-A. He's not owned in any fantasy leagues synced here at FantasySP.
Lara was called up to help during a doubleheader on July 2. Lara pitched three innings in relief for Washington, allowing no runs on a hit and no walks. He struck out four batters and used just 36 pitches to get through his appearance.
Lara is the team's No. 16 prospect, and had a 2026 ETA, so to see him get moved up already means the team thinks pretty highly of him. Hopefully the next group that leads the Nationals is in a similar boat, because the GM and manager were fired.
Lara is a 45 overall graded pitcher. He has a 60 mark for his slider, a 50 for his fastball and a 45 for his changeup. Lara has a 50 mark for his control.
The 22-year-old throws from the right side and was signed by the Nats in 2019.
Lara has a 4.64 earned run average over 413 minor league innings. He's pitched in parts of five seasons, making 88 starts over 91 appearances. Lara has a .248 average against him, along with 380 punchouts and 159 walks.
It's a bit surprising to see Lara was added to the 40-man roster as the extra player for the doubleheader. He has weak numbers across three minor league levels this season, and will spend some more time in Double-A ramping things up.
Lara is a dynasty/keeper fantasy option only right now. After his solid debut, he's worth tracking a little more closely. He could get another crack at the big leagues this season, especially if the Nationals sell at the trade deadline.
Jack Perkins - Athletics
Perkins is rostered in 4% of fantasy leagues right now.
He's appeared in three MLB games this season, all coming since June 22. It's been a relief appearance for each outing, but he's covered at least three innings every time.
Perkins worked three scoreless innings against the Guardians in his debut on June 22. He allowed a hit and no walks, while striking out two batters. Perkins threw 30 pitches in that outing.
He tossed 48 pitches to get 10 outs against the Yankees on June 28. Perkins allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out three batters.
Perkins then worked three innings against the Giants on July 4, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks, while punching out five.
He pitched in wins for the Athletics in back-to-back appearances, and that means Perkins earned saves for both outings. Perkins has looked really good in his first few MLB outings.
Perkins is ranked eighth among the top-30 Athletics' prospects. He is 25 years old, throws from the right side and was taken 154th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft.
He has a 45 grade overall. His best pitch is a 60-grade fastball, and he has a 55 mark for his slider. Perkins has a 50 mark for his curveball and cutter. He has 45 marks for his changeup and control.
Perkins has a good 3.42 ERA over 47 starts and 55 minor league appearances. He's covered 239 2/3 innings over four seasons, striking out 278 batters along the way. Perkins has a .218 average against him and has walked 104 batters.
Perkins isn't a super highly-regarded prospect, but looking at his career numbers, he might be a bit overlooked. He's fared well in the minor leagues, and has gotten off to a good start in the big leagues.
He's pitched like he's part of the starting rotation with the space between his outings, but he hasn't been given a starting chance yet. That could be coming soon for Perkins, but he still has a little value in his current role.
He could be a sneaky good streaming option every time through the rotation. In really deep leagues, he's maybe worth adding, and starting when his turn through the rotation would be (if he were in the starting rotation).
Deep-league fantasy owners should keep an eye on Perkins in case he eventually cracks the starting rotation for the Athletics.
