2023 Fantasy Baseball Week 6 Trade Advice: Players To Buy Low & Sell High (5/10/23)

Nick Roberts May 9th 11:00 PM EDT.

We’re officially midway through Week 6 of the fantasy baseball season, and that means it’s time to start making some moves with your roster. Who do you sell high on? Who do you buy low on? Which struggling players just aren’t worth buying at all? Besides me spending too much time looking at this stuff (more on that below), we have some great resources available to us.

As you may or may not know, we have a fantastic Trade Analyzer Chart here on the site that you can use to gauge players’ current values. You’ll notice a few outliers in there that the algorithm will catch up to as we go, but this tool is an absolutely fantastic way to look at sell-high and buy-low players.

I’ll let you go explore the chart (and an amazing Trade Analyzer Tool if you’re a premium member) on your own in a minute, but if you’re short on time, here are some players who are sticking out to me as of May 10.

Peep the latest waiver wire trends to gain an edge over your opponents in your fantasy baseball leagues!

Top Fantasy Baseball Buy Low Candidates

Dylan Cease, Chicago White Sox

I wouldn’t blame you if you steered clear of Cease. But for those of you with a stronger stomach and/or tolerance for risk, I submit to you, the case of Dylan Cease. He currently carries his highest ERA (5.58) and WHIP (1.51) since his rookie season in 2019. And he’s coming off a season during which he finished with a 2.20 ERA and 1.11 WHIP AND  back-to-back seasons of more than 225 strikeouts. Now, I will say he’s been really bad with walks this year, so that may not just disappear. But if you can buy low, there’s a ton of upside with Cease.

Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners

You may not be buying ridiculously low due to Rodriguez’s drat spot dictating a steep price, but Rodriguez is hitting .210 and he’s likely frustrated anyone who drafted him. Enter, you. Rodriguez isn’t going to hit .210 all year and he’s actually not that far behind his home run, RBI, and steal pace from last season. See if you can sneak in with a buy-low offer here.

Alex Bregman, Houston Astros

I’m not screaming that Bregman is going to bust out like it’s 2019, but I do think he’s going to start hitting at a better clip than .205 with 20 runs, four home runs, and 16 RBI. The 29-year-old hit 23 home runs with over 90 runs and over 90 RBI last season, so I think it’s safe to say he’ll pick up the pace a bit. I’m not saying he’ll equal last year’s output (and you shouldn’t pay as if he will), but Bregman is a great buy-low value if you can get him cheap.

Top Fantasy Baseball Sell High Candidates

Esteury Ruiz, Oakland A’s

This isn’t me saying you MUST sell Ruiz. He’s definitely worth keeping on your roster if you already have him. But if you have a league mate who is desperate for help in the steals category, this might be your time to strike while the iron is hot. Ruiz currently leads the majors with 17 steals and is on pace for somewhere around 75 steals on the season. That’s a number he’s unlikely to hit, but it’s a story worth trying to tell as you attempt to pry a good player in return.

Masataka Yoshida, Boston Red Sox

In a way, you’re watching me guess here. However, I’d argue it’s a very well-informed guess. Yoshida has exceeded expectations to start his MLB career and is currently hitting .321 with 22 runs, six home runs, 24 RBI, and two steals. Since we’re only about a quarter of the way through the season, my educated guess here is going to be that pitchers (and their scouts) catch up to Yoshida and we see his numbers dip. I’d be happy to be wrong here (I’m a Red Sox fan), but I think Yoshida is bound to come back down to Earth a bit so I’m selling.

Eduardo Rodgriguez, Detroit Tigers

Rodriguez has been absolutely out-of-this-world as of late and carries a 3-2 record with a 1.81 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts through 44.2 innings through the first month-plus of the season. While I think Rodriguez will continue to have a good season (especially if a trade brings him to a contender who can pad his win total), he’s pitching at an unsustainable pace during which he’s only allowed two total runs in his last five starts. See if you can capitalize on this insane five-game stretch.
