Hey folks. The trade market has been active, highlighted by a rare divisional move sending a veteran defenseman to a rival for draft capital, and a playoff push team adding a veteran forward while shipping out a depth piece plus future picks. Whether you're tracking hits, blocks, or depth scoring, these two deals subtly but meaningfully shift opportunity across rosters and deserve attention before your next set of lineup decisions.

At the same time, real-world availability continues to be a key fantasy driver. One starting goalie is now done for the season after hip surgery, another is returning from an extended personal absence amid surrounding drama, and a top six forward faces a multi-game suspension - all of which open doors for sitters and streamers alike as we head into a pivotal stretch of the NHL schedule as it gets closer to the Olympic break.

With deals and roster movement piling up, there's plenty to unpack. Let's dive right into the breaking trade news, and the rest of the roster impacting movement.

Islanders and Rangers Trade

To the New York Islanders: Carson Soucy

To the New York Rangers: Third‑round draft pick (2026)

Fantasy Breakdown

This is a depth move on paper, but it carries niche fantasy relevance depending on your league format. The Islanders add a veteran defensemen capable of stabilizing a third pairing role and contributing on penalty kill shifts. Soucy's offensive upside is modest, but he provides physicality and reliability in a bottom pair role.

For fantasy managers in shallow leagues, there's little immediate impact - he's unlikely to generate significant points. In deeper leagues, however, he's worth monitoring for peripheral stats like hits and blocks, and could see marginal increases in minutes if injuries arise among the Islanders' top four defensemen.

From the Rangers' side, this is clean asset management; trading a depth veteran for a future pick subtly opens the door for younger defenders to earn more playing time, which could ripple into fantasy relevance in deep formats. It was no secret that the Rangers are now in selling mode, and this trade signifies a start to the floodgate being pried wide open.

Soucy has three goals, five assists, and 18 penalty minutes in 46 games played as a defensemen. He also has 39 shots on goal, 71 hits, and 66 blocked shots.

Islanders and Devils Trade

To the New York Islanders: Ondrej Palat, third‑round draft pick (2026), sixth‑round draft pick (2027)

To the New Jersey Devils: Maxim Tsyplakov

Fantasy Breakdown

Palat, who had been held for roster management, was widely speculated to be dealt - and now he has been.

The Islanders add a veteran forward with playoff experience who can immediately slot into their middle six rotation and contribute on the powerplay, if necessary. Palat's arrival could shift scoring depth and ice time for other forwards, opening up both opportunity and competition for points.

For fantasy managers, Palat is a clear addition in standard and deeper leagues. Emphasis on deeper. He has a track record of contributing across goals, assists, and powerplay points - though not many, making him an asset to start or add in some formats. On the Devils' side, Tsyplakov is a younger depth forward who may earn opportunity if injuries occur, but his fantasy impact is limited in the short term.

Palat has four goals, six assists, and one powerplay point in 51 games played as a forward. He also has 53 shots on goal, 89 hits, and 41 blocked shots.

Tsyplakov has one goal, one assist, and has a plus/minus of -9 in 27 games played as a forward. He also has 22 shots on goal, 46 hits, and four blocked shots.

Injuries and Suspensions

Thatcher Demko - Vancouver Canucks

It's a disappointing blow for Canucks fans as their starting goalie is now officially out for the season following hip surgery. Demko had been a steady presence in net, giving Vancouver a sense of stability between the pipes, and his absence leaves a clear gap in the lineup that fans and fantasy managers alike will feel immediately.

Kevin Lankinen will take over almost all of the remaining starts for Vancouver, thrusting him into the spotlight. From a fantasy perspective, this makes Lankinen the clear primary option, and managers should adjust their lineups accordingly. There's also a chance that secondary call ups or backups could see action in back-to-back situations or on rest days, making it important to monitor the Canucks' goaltending rotation closely.

This change reshapes both short term and deeper league strategy. Managers who relied on Demko now have a replacement priority, while those in deeper formats can consider speculative adds should any other netminder receive starts. Overall, the impact is significant - a season-ending injury at goalie is always a game changer in fantasy circles, and it's now all about maximizing the value of Lankinen and keeping tabs on the depth behind him.

If you're in a redraft league, waste no time and drop Demko and look for an alternative. If you're a Canucks' fan, again, Lankinen is your direct replacement here, though at a significantly lower caliber.

Demko had eight wins in 20 starts as a goaltender. He also had an .897 save percentage, 2.9 goals against average, and one shutout.

Lankinen has seven wins in 26 games started as a goaltender. He also has an .894 save percentage, 3.44 goals against average, and zero shutouts.

Linus Ullmark - Ottawa Senators

After an extended absence, Ullmark is finally back in the Ottawa net. His time away was surrounded by rumors surrounding the reason for his leave, but the organization issued a public statement squashing those claims, clarifying that these rumors were unfounded. Ullmark briefly suited up as a backup before making his official return on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights.

From a fantasy perspective, Ullmark is an automatic start. His return immediately stabilizes the Senators' previously questionable goaltending situation, giving owners a clear option in net. With him back, Ottawa now has a defined starter, and fantasy managers can anticipate more predictable start patterns going forward, which is a relief after the recent uncertainty.

Owners will be looking for Ullmark to regain form quickly, as his performance will dictate not only Ottawa's defensive confidence but also his own value in fantasy formats. If he can settle in and post consistent numbers, he becomes a top option in weekly and daily formats alike, providing a much-needed boost for Senators' goalies and fantasy rosters across the board.

Ullmark has 14 wins in 28 games started as a goaltender. He also has an .881 save percentage, 2.95 goals against average, and one shutout.

Bryan Rust - Pittsburgh Penguins

Rust has been suspended for three games by the Department of Player Safety for an illegal check to the head on Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser. This puts a temporary pause on his contributions and leaves a small gap in Pittsburgh's lineup, particularly for owners who rely on his consistent scoring and secondary stats.

From a fantasy perspective, Rust's absence opens opportunities for other Penguins' forwards to see increased ice time and potentially step into top six roles during the suspension. Owners will need to adjust start/sit decisions over the next few games, but he remains a valuable asset once the suspension concludes, and his return should quickly restore his role in the Penguins' offensive rotation.

Rust has 18 goals, 21 assists, and 17 powerplay points in 47 games played as a forward. He also has 125 shots on goal, 17 hits, and 52 blocked shots.
