Fantasy Hockey Trade Deadline Day Recap: Part 1 | Luke Schenn, Dylan Cozens, Brandon Tanev and More
Shelmo breaks down all of the trades on NHL trade deadline day so far in part one of this series.
We made it, folks! All day we monitored the trade deadline and here is my part one recap of all of the trades that happened throughout the day right up until the 3 p.m. buzzer, that brought the end of trade eligibility to the NHL.
Grab an iced capp, and strap yourself in. Let's dive into part one of my full list of all the deals that broke on trade deadline day.
The Capitals and Penguins Trade
To the Washington Capitals: Anthony Beauvillier
To the Pittsburgh Penguins: Second-round pick (2025)
The Capitals are getting a serviceable middle six forward in this deal. Don't let Beauvillier's numbers this season fool you, as the Pens have struggled to score all season long. Beauvillier is a flexible player who can play up and down your lineup and make an impact, and he has been getting both powerplay and penalty kill time as well. That said, there's not much fantasy value here.
Beauvillier has 13 goals, seven assists, and one powerplay point as a forward in 63 games played. He also has 120 shots on goal, 108 hits, and two blocked shots.
The Kings and Flyers Trade
To the Los Angeles Kings: Andrei Kuzmenko
To the Philadelphia Flyers: Third-round pick
A depth move for the Kings who are having a really decent year and are trying to capitalize on their standings. Kuzmenko will had a middle six forward who can move up and down the lineup and has seen some success on the powerplay. He won't be more than a depth forward with the Kings, and may not see the same deployment due to an increase of talent around him, however he is more than serviceable, especially for the price paid.
Kuzmenko has six goals, 14 assists, and eight powerplay points as a forward in 44 games played. He also has 52 shots on goal, and 11 hits and blocks respectively.
The Senators and Sabres Trade
To the Ottawa Senators: Dylan Cozens, Dennis Gilbert, second-round pick (2026)
To the Buffalo Sabres: Josh Norris, Jacob Bernard-Docker
A decent trade for the Sabres, honestly. Norris has been known to have some injury issues, and Bernard-Docker has not lived up to the hype and is not the most difficult defender to play against. He has also been on the bubble of being their seventh defenseman in the lineup. Cozens coming over will hopefully give him a spark and increase his production and get him out of the funk he has been in in Buffalo. The Senators also somehow stole a second-round pick out of this deal. Pretty impressive negotiating by general manager Steve Staios.
Cozens has not yet hit his ceiling, and it's likely his level of intensity will increase having the opportunity to play meaningful games.
Cozens has 11 goals, 20 assists, and 11 powerplay points as a forward in 61 games played. He also has 139 shots on goal, 148 hits, and 37 blocked shots.
Gilbert has zero goals, five assists, and 50 penalty minutes as a defenseman in 25 games played. He also has five shots on goal, 52 hits, and 29 blocked shots. He is not an impact player and will have no fantasy value in any league, although he has had recent solid physical numbers.
Norris has 20 goals, 13 assists, and four powerplay points as a forward in 53 games played. He also has 94 shots on goal, 133 hits, and 45 blocked shots.
Bernard-Docker has one goal, three assists, and four penalty minutes as a defenseman in 25 games played. He also has 18 shots on goal, 21 hits, and 25 blocked shots.
The Jets and Penguins Trade
To the Winnipeg Jets: Luke Schenn
To the Pittsburgh Penguins: Second-round pick (2026), fourth-round pick (2027)
As I called in my March 6 article; “Is it possible he gets moved again before the trade deadline? Maybe, we'll see.” I love it when a prediction comes true.
Schenn has one goal, four assists, and 41 penalty minutes as a defenseman in 61 games played. He also has 66 shots on goal, a whopping 228 hits, and 76 blocked shots.
This is great for the Jets who could use a bit more grit on their blueline. We've already discussed Schenn at length, so I will leave it at that. A final note is I sure hope the Jets go after St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn!
The Jets and Kraken Trade
To the Winnipeg Jets: Brandon Tanev
To the Seattle Kraken: Second-round pick (2027)
Keeping in line with the theme of adding grit to your team, the Jets made another trade minutes after the previous and picked up forward Tanev to the roster. Another middle six forward who will block shots and kill penalties. He will also be the oldest player in the locker room who will bring a calming presence and is a character guy.
I like this move for the Jets. Tanev has a reputation of being hard working and gives every shift his all. These moves have proven to fans that the Jets are taking a serious swing at the Stanley Cup this year. They are going to be fun to watch down the stretch!
Tanev has nine goals, eight assists, and 10 penalty minutes as a forward in 60 games played. He also has 85 shots on goal, 121 hits, and 91 blocked shots.
