Conference Championship Fantasy Football Matchups: Position-by-Position Breakdown
Breaking down the fantasy football matchups for every position for the championship games on Sunday.
Just three NFL games remain for the season. Two will happen on Sunday, as the AFC and NFC Championship Games take place. Let's break down the fantasy football matchups.
The Patriots and Broncos will meet in the AFC title game at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday before the Seahawks and Rams square off at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Fantasy football defensive rankings can be found all season on FantasySP.
Quarterbacks
Every quarterback playing this weekend will have a below-average fantasy matchup.
The best matchup belongs to Seattle's Sam Darnold, who will have a slightly below-average test against the Rams.
Denver is a bit tougher challenge for New England's Drake Maye. The Patriots' are an even tougher test for Broncos' Jarrett Stidham, who will be replacing the injured Bo Nix.
The toughest fantasy test is LA's Matthew Stafford against the Seahawks.
Seattle and New England each allowed 14 fantasy points per game to opposing fantasy quarterbacks this season. Denver gave up just 15 points, while Los Angeles surrendered 16 fantasy points per contest.
Running Backs
Unsurprisingly, all the running backs also have below-average tests as well.
The best matchup belongs to the Seattle running backs, as LA allowed 20 fantasy points per game. The Seahawks' backfield will be powered by Kenneth Walker now after the season-ending injury to Zach Charbonnet. Velus Jones was the back who got work last week, but Cam Akers is another option - both are on the team's practice squad.
Seattle allows 18 fantasy points per game to backs. Los Angeles has Kyren Williams and Blake Corum leading the backfield, and a split backfield could lead to subpar fantasy showings from each back.
New England and Denver each give up just 17 fantasy points per game, so the backs in that game are in for a very tough test.
New England has TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson. RJ Harvey has been leading the Broncos, with help from Jaleel McLaughlin, but J.K. Dobbins is an option too after he had his 21-day practice window opened (he's been on injured reserve).
Wide Receivers
The Rams are again the best fantasy matchup among the remaining teams at wide receiver. LA allows 33 fantasy points per contest to wideouts.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the top wide receiver for Seattle, so he's set up well. Cooper Kupp and Rashid Shaheed are some secondary options.
New England is a below-average test, allowing 28 fantasy points per game.
Denver has Courtland Sutton leading the way. With injuries to Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant, Marvin Mims and Lil'Jordan Humphrey are fantasy options to possibly consider.
Denver gives up 27 fantasy points per contest.
New England has Stefon Diggs leading the way and Kayshon Boutte as the No. 2 option. DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams are other options.
Seattle is a brutal test on fantasy wideouts, giving up just 25 fantasy points per game.
That means Puka Nacua and Davante Adams have the toughest challenge of the weekend. Most fantasy owners are still going to trust them, but expectations should at least be tempered a bit with each star wideout. Jordan Whittington and Konata Mumpfield were other wideouts who chipped in the last round.
Tight Ends
The best fantasy matchup for a tight end belongs to the Rams. Seattle gave up 15 fantasy points per game this season.
Colby Parkinson, Tyler Higbee and Terrance Ferguson were all involved a bit last week for LA. Maybe one of them could surprise, especially knowing that Seattle is much better at slowing wideouts than it is at stopping tight ends.
The Broncos' defense allows 14 fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends, which is just a spot behind the Seattle matchup.
Hunter Henry has been the top New England tight end, but he really struggled last round. He was outproduced by teammate TE Austin Hooper. The matchup for the tight ends in New England is much more favorable this week though.
The Patriots were an average fantasy test for tight ends this season, allowing 13 fantasy points per game.
Evan Engram was the most involved Denver tight end last week, but he only made one catch. Nate Adkins and Adam Trautman are some other tight ends who play for the Broncos.
The Rams are just below the Patriots, also allowing 13 fantasy points per game.
AJ Barner is the top Seattle tight end, but he too is coming off a very slow game. He fared well against the Rams this season though - we'll cover that more in stories to come.
So of all the fantasy positions, the tight ends have the best overall matchups. Unfortunately, there's not many very good fantasy options left.
