A big NBA trade went down on Wednesday evening, so let's discuss it, and the fantasy basketball fallout here!

The trade was between the Nuggets, Cavaliers and Clippers, but also included the Wizards and Hornets.

Trade Details

The big name in the deal was Peyton Watson, who went from the Nuggets to the Cavaliers. Cleveland also got Cam Whitmore from the Wizards as part of the deal.

Denver got a 2031 first-round pick from the Cavaliers, a 2032 second-round pick from the Kings and Julian Reese. The Clippers landed Max Strus in the deal.

Washington got Tre Mann, a 2027 second-round pick and cash. Charlotte ended up getting Dennis Schroder, something we covered a couple days ago.

Cavaliers' Outlook

Watson was the big player in the deal, and the Cavaliers did well in the trade and landed an impact player to upgrade their roster. The Cavs signed Watson to a four-year deal worth $88 million.

Watson has a chance to start in Cleveland, but even if he comes off the bench, he'll play enough minutes to be a good fantasy basketball asset. He's a forward, and can play the 3 or 4 spots.

Jaylon Tyson is another option at the 3, but it's the best spot for Watson to start at. That's because Evan Mobley is the starter at the 4 spot - he is definitely starting.

Across four years in the NBA (all with Denver), Watson started 64 of his 225 games played. He is coming off a career season, in which he averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 blocks and 0.9 steals over 29.6 minutes a night. He shot 49.1% overall and 41.1% from deep.

He might struggle to reach those averages if he's not playing as many minutes, but I still see Watson playing enough to be a good fantasy asset. He'll be worth deep-league fantasy ownership for sure, and should be in most standard leagues too. We can further assess his outlook when we know if he's starting or coming off the bench.

Whitmore is another option at the 3 spot. In three NBA seasons with Houston and Washington, he's shown some signs of promise.

He's averaged 10.5 points per game over his career, and could be another solid piece off the bench for Cleveland. He has competition for playing time, so he'll need to earn it, so I'm curious to see how the Cavaliers go about things at the 3 spot.

Cleveland is a better team after this deal, and they have a better chance to contend for the Eastern Conference title now. It doesn't make them the favorite, but it definitely helps the team's chances.

Nuggets' Outlook

Reese was waived after being traded to Denver, so all Denver really got in the deal were two draft picks. That's not a great return for Watson, but it does clear a roster spot.

Reportedly, the Nuggets will use that roster spot to chase after free agent DeMar DeRozan. We can cover that move when/if it happens.

After this trade though, Denver is worse off without Watson. They are falling behind in the Western Conference, and even the addition of DeRozan isn't going to help matters much. There will still be some good/great fantasy basketball assets in town, but the team looks like a playoff contender and not a serious threat in the West.

Clippers' Outlook

Strus is a solid get for the Clippers. The 30-year-old has played in the NBA for seven years already, and will now be joining his fourth team.

He can start or come off the bench, and has averaged 10.4 points per game over his career. He adds in a few rebounds and assists to be a decent fantasy asset.

Strus will likely be a forward depth option for LA. Brandon Ingram and Derrick Jones Jr. are the projected starters at forward, and Bennedict Mathurin and Rui Hachimura are also projected to be ahead of Strus on the depth chart.

Strus could still play and produce enough to be worth owning/utilizing in deeper fantasy leagues. We'll see if any more roster moves are made this offseason to help his cause going into the 2026-27 season.

Wizards' Outlook

Mann was someone we discussed earlier this week, in the same writeup as Schroder. We mentioned that his outlook wasn't great in Cleveland, and it didn't improve after he got shipped to Washington.

Trae Young is the starting point guard, and the team still has Bub Carrington too, so Mann looks like PG3 at best right now.

Mann has shown flashes of upside in the NBA, but likely won't play enough to be worth more than deep-league fantasy value in 2026-27. Injuries could change his fortunes, so we'll keep an eye on that and let you know if he's ever worth scooping up in the upcoming season.

Hornets' Outlook

Again, we already discussed Schroder to Charlotte earlier this week.

We mentioned how he has been in the NBA for 13 years and will be joining his 12th team. He's averaged 13.7 points per game over his career, along with a few rebounds and assists.

Schroder has a chance at a decent role in Charlotte, but he's a backup option to Coby White. Rookie Christian Anderson is another point guard option that Schroder will have to compete for minutes/production with.

That makes Schroder another deep-league fantasy option only, but if he plays enough and produces in his time on the court, he could sneak into some standard leagues here and there.
