Surprising Quarterback Performances

The top fantasy quarterback so far is Josh Allen, which isn't a surprise. What is a surprise is that Justin Fields, Daniel Jones and Aaron Rodgers are all top-seven fantasy QBs so far.

Fields and Rodgers squared off in the same game, and didn't have the best fantasy matchups based on last year's numbers. That didn't matter, as each quarterback delivered big-time numbers.

Fields was 16-of-22 passing for 218 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. The dual-threat QB added 48 yards and two scores on 12 rushing attempts.

Fields is going to need to keep delivering on the ground to offset lower passing numbers, but his dual-threat ability is why so many fantasy owners like rostering him.

Rodgers was 22-of-30 passing for 244 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He added nothing as a runner.

I was skeptical of Rodgers coming into the season, but he delivered big-time numbers as a passer. It'll be tougher for him to remain a good fantasy asset than Fields, but the aging QB might have some better fantasy value than most thought coming into the year.

Jones led the Colts to a thrashing of the Dolphins. He was 22-of-29 passing for 272 yards, a touchdown and no picks. Jones added 26 rushing yards and two scores on seven rushing attempts.

This performance really came out of nowhere, and solidified Jones' starting role for the time being. He is an underrated dual-threat option, and could have some legit fantasy value moving forward.

We'll cover these three quarterbacks more in the weekly waiver wire story, so be sure to check back for that as well.

Flowers, Coleman Lead Wideouts After Sunday Night Showdown

It's been a bit of a down week for most non-QBs in the fantasy football world. Zay Flowers and Keon Coleman changed the fortune a bit on Sunday night.

Flowers is the top PPR wideout in week 1 after hauling in seven of his nine targets for 143 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed twice for eight more yards.

Flowers is easily the team's top pass catcher, but even this kind of performance was a bit of a surprise. This could be Flowers' breakout year, so many fantasy owners are going to be interested in buying into Flowers after week 1.

Coleman had 112 yards and a score on eight receptions and 11 targets for the Bills.

There's still no clear No. 1 wideout in Buffalo, but Coleman made an early case for that honor in week 1. Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer and Dalton Kincaid are still around to steal work from Coleman, but after his week 1 performance, and seeing what team he's on, there's a chance that Coleman is a big-time waiver option going into the second week.

I loved Emeka Egbuka coming into the season, and the rookie delivered a big-time performance in his regular season debut. He's a top-five PPR wideout right now.

He made just four catches on six targets, but went for 67 yards and two scores. There's an obvious bump with the touchdown grabs, but with Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan out a while, Egbuka should deliver strong numbers in the early going.

Egbuka ended up finishing as the team's No. 1 wideout, outperforming Mike Evans. I'm a fan of Egbuka at least until Godwin and McMillan come back, and think he'll get more fantasy love going into week 2.

Deebo Samuel Sr. delivered a big showing in his Commanders' debut.

He had 77 receiving yards on seven catches and 10 targets. Samuel added a 19-yard rushing touchdown to really prop his fantasy score up.

He ended up leading the Commanders offensively through the air. I don't see that continuing all season with Terry McLaurin around, but maybe a change of scenery will help Samuel to a bigger fantasy year.

Another Surprise Atop TE List

Brock Bowers and George Kittle were amongst the tight ends who got hurt in week 1. Bowers still had a good fantasy showing, but he finished behind Juwan Johnson, who currently leads the position in PPR points.

Johnson didn't catch a touchdown to prop his score up either. He was targeted 11 times, making eight grabs for 76 yards.

Chris Olave still led the team in targets, but Johnson had more yards and catches. With Olave's injury history, and not many good pass catchers otherwise, Johnson could be a sneaky good fantasy option this season. New Orleans might not win much, but if they sling the ball around, maybe Johnson will remain a good fantasy TE.

Tyler Warren impressed in his regular season debut for the Colts.

He caught seven of his nine targets for 76 yards and rushed once for three yards. Warren led the Colts in targets and receptions, and he only finished behind Michael Pittman Jr. in yards.

Warren should remain a high-end fantasy option as the Colts search for long-term playmakers. Jones showed enough in week 1 to trust for the time being, and that boosts Warren's fantasy value a bit as well.

Harold Fannin Jr. is another rookie who shined on Sunday.

He went for 63 yards on seven grabs and nine targets, while adding in a three-yard rush. Fannin had the most targets of any Brown, and he greatly outproduced starting tight end David Njoku.

There's room on this offense for a guy like Fannin to consistently deliver, but I'm not as confident in him remaining a good fantasy option as I am with Warren. This team's fantasy outlook could change with every passing week, but Fannin is definitely among the fantasy tight end waiver wire options going into week 2.

Running Back Performances Down So Far

Only five fantasy running backs have over 20 PPR points at this point.

Derrick Henry leads the way, but he had a costly fumble that contributed to the Ravens blowing a lead to the Bills.

Travis Etienne is the No. 6 PPR back so far. He had 143 rushing yards on 16 carries and added 13 receiving yards on three catches and targets.

I thought Tank Bigsby was going to lead this backfield on the ground, but Etienne dominated the touches. Bigsby only had five carries for 12 yards, and wasn't involved in the passing game.

I don't see Etienne dominating the backfield like that all season, but he definitely will get a fantasy boost heading into week 2, while Bigsby falls to being a deep-league option. Maybe Etienne is going to star with a new staff in Jacksonville, so now could be the time to buy into him.

Dylan Sampson was the top running back for the Browns, and it wasn't even close.

He ended up getting 20 touches on the day. Jerome Ford, the presumed starter, had only seven touches, while Raheim Sanders got three looks.

Sampson had 29 rushing yards on 12 carries, which obviously isn't good. The rookie had 64 receiving yards on eight catches and targets though, so he was a very good PPR back in week 1.

The addition of Quinshon Judkins is going to muddy the backfield a bit, but I bet it's Sanders and Ford who are taken out of the picture, with Sampson serving as the lead back, or No. 2 back.

I'm not all-in on adding Sampson, but he could be a very good streaming option in all leagues until Judkins joins the mix.
