High-Value Backup Role in Kansas City Offers Intriguing Handcuff Appeal
Now serving as the primary backup behind Patrick Mahomes, Justin Fields finds himself in an intriguing situation in Kansas City. Head coach Andy Reid has praised Fields as a legitimate starter, expressing full confidence in his ability should he be called upon. While he won't see regular snaps without an injury to Mahomes, Fields remains one of the premier backup options in the league.
In draft circles, his ADP has seen massive volatility, settling around 416 overall in early July after swinging wildly throughout June. At this practically free cost, fantasy managers are treating him as a zero-risk stash. Our projections of 16.2 fantasy points reflect a lack of standalone volume, but his rushing upside makes him a highly valuable handcuff to target in the final rounds of deeper formats.
Fields brings plenty of historical production, including a 1,143-yard rushing season back in 2022. Though he only projects for 221 passing yards and 31 rushing yards in our season-long models, his dual-threat skill set would immediately put him in the streaming conversation if he ever starts. He is a high-upside hold for roster managers looking to secure the Kansas City quarterback room.
