Jordan Love Potential Injury Fantasy Football Impact
Jordan Love went down with a possible significant leg injury on Friday night. We will dive into the impact it might have on him and his team.
Friday night football in Brazil ended on an unpleasant and sobering note as the Green Bay Packers franchise quarterback went down with a leg injury in the closing seconds of the game. We do not know the extent of the injury or even exactly what the injury is just yet.
It could have been an ankle but looked more like it could have been a knee injury. Hopefully, we get an update on his status as soon as possible and the news is positive. However, while we wait on a diagnosis and timetable, we will have to consider how this will impact our fantasy teams and what moves we need to make.
First and foremost, we will start at the quarterback position. Malik Willis came in for Love after he went down and would presumably start if Love is forced to miss any time.
If Love was your starting quarterback, Willis is not a viable option to replace him. You shouldn't even entertain that idea for a second. In every opportunity he has received, Willis has been nothing short of a disaster. He's been bad enough that he only received three starts in Tennessee despite them having to sign other terrible quarterbacks off the street in 2022 just to field a team.
In those three starts, he didn't once manage to reach 100 yards or complete 50% of his passes. In his career, he has a total of zero touchdowns with three interceptions as well as one rushing touchdown accompanied by three lost fumbles. The only glimmer of hope would be his rushing upside, however, even that has been overly impressive.
For his career, he's totaled just 144 rushing yards with a career high of 43 yards in a single game. Needless to say, he should be left right there on the waiver wire where he is. Any other starting quarterback is a better option and we can also make a case for Taysom Hill if he's QB eligible.
You can make the case that this is both good or bad for Josh Jacobs, but odds are it will be terrible. The team will obviously want to throw the ball less if Love is not available, which would lead to more volume for Jacobs. With that said, the offense will be so bad that the volume won't be enough to make up for Love's absence.
Not only will the defense be able to stack the box to stop the run, but the offense won't be able to move the ball at all. That means fewer plays, much fewer red zone opportunities, and a bad game script with the team often trailing in the second half. This wouldn't make Jacobs a must sit, but it would certainly change his status as a must-start option.
A long-term injury to Love would be catastrophic to the all the pass-catchers on the Packers. We're not so sure any of them would be a startable option. The wide receivers and tight ends would all have to be left on the bench. That will do damage to a lot of fantasy teams being that they have at least four potential weekly fantasy starters in Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Luke Musgrave. You can also make a case for Dontayvion Wicks and Tucker Kraft in deeper leagues.
The loss of Love would be unbelievably deflating for Reed owners who had a monster game in the opener, going off for 138 yards and highlighted by a 70-yard TD catch and run. Even so, I don't see how you put him in your starting lineup if Willis is the starter.
The loss of Love would be devasting for the Packers in real life and for every fantasy option on that offense. Of course, we hope Love is fully healthy as soon as possible and the injury is minor just like we would for any human being. However, this will be a particularly tough loss for NFL fans who love watching, the fantasy owners who depend on him and the teammates he shares the field with.
We will keep you updated on any information of this injury as it becomes available to us. Hopefully he is able to progress positively through the week and potentially even play next week. This injury wasn't one that looked like it would clearly be a long-term issue, but it also looked like there was still a chance it was. Wishing Love the best and we hope to see him back out on the field soon.
