Week 3 Fantasy Football QB and TE Droppables: Should you drop Joe Burrow, Kyle Pitts, and Bryce Young?

Nick Roberts Sep 19th 8:10 AM EDT.

We're always looking to make moves in fantasy football, and this is going to be a weekly spot where we look at some of the most widely-dropped players across fantasy leagues and decide whether you should (or shouldn’t) cut bait with them – due to either underperformance, injury, or otherwise.

We covered waiver adds already, but in order to pick up someone, you have to drop someone. And that isn’t a decision you should take lightly. We’ve all made drops we’ve come to regret.

So let’s take a look at some of the most dropped players for Week 3 and decide if they’re actually drop-worthy.

As always, check out the fantasy assistant for personalized waiver wire recommendations and team analysis. Make moves based on projections, strengths and weaknesses, waiver alerts, and lots more.

Week 3 Fantasy Football Droppables

Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals

This is a bit of a troll by me as I'd never recommend you drop what was a top-8 draft day quarterback pick, but the numbers aren't looking very good for Burrow right now. Through two weeks, the only full-time quarterbacks averaging less fantasy points per game are, well, no one. The superstar is averaging just 9.3 fantasy points per game and has looked awful after missing the preseason witih a calf injury. He reaggravated that same injury this week so I'd think about sitting him in relatively tough matchups against the Rams and moreso against the Titans, but Burrow is an obvious hold. He'll figure things out eventually.

Verdict: Hold

Bryce Young, QB, Carolina Panthers

The first two weeks of the season have not been kind to this year's top overall pick. While Young has outplayed Burrow, that's a really low bar relatively speaking. Young hasn't thrown for more than 153 yards in either of his first two NFL games and looks a little lost in the moment thus far. While he's cushioned his stats (barely) with some extra rushing yards, the rookie is averaging just 10.5 fantasy points per game. Things will get better for Young as he gets more experience, but the Panthers lack any serious offensive weapons and will thus limit his upside. Things should get a little easier against Seattle and Minnesota, but I don't see any reason to hang onto Young in anything but deeper leagues.

Verdict: Drop

Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers

Pickett had an excellent preseason, but that hasn't exactly translated into a successful start to the regular season. The second-year starter is averaging just 10.0 fantasy points per game and hasn't topped 232 yards in either contest. He's already thrown three interceptions and is hasn't added much on the ground at all with a total of -2 rushing yards on the year. Witih Diontae Johnson out for at least four weeks, things might not get better any time soon despite easier (on paper) matchups against the Raiders and Texans. With so many options at quarterback, I think we can safely drop Pickett back to waivers.

Verdict: Drop

Kyle Pitts, TE, Atlanta Falcons

Sounds crazy, right? Well, what if I told you that there was a player who has played two games and only seen eight total targets that turned into four catches for 59 yards? You'd probably drop him, right? Well, I wouldn't go that far just yet as Pitts has more talent than any tight end not named Travis Kelce, but things aren't looking good for the former top-10 pick. The Falcons seem to be going out of their way to not utilize Pitts and have even gone as far as using Jonnu Smith as more of an offensive focal point than Pitts. While it's way too early to be dropping Pitts, he's not even close to a must-start right now.

Verdict: Hold

Juwan Johnson, TE, New Orleans Saints

Johnson was a popular preseason sleeper, but things just haven't worked out for him through two weeks. The Saints have a lot of mouths to feed with Chris Olave, Mike Thomas, and Rasheed Shaheed to name a few, and Johnson has found himself further down Derek Carr's pecking order. He's caught just five balls for 49 yards on eight targets overall thus far and isn't seeing enough targets to warrant a roster spot in most fantasy leagues. He's fine to hold onto in deeper leagues, but I'd rather roll with guys like Hunter Henry, Sam LaPorta, or Dalton Kincaid right now.

Verdict: Drop
