Fantasy Baseball Pitcher Streamers and Matchup Rankings for Wednesday

Every team is in their second-to-last series currently, bringing the light that much closer to the end of the tunnel. For some franchises, that's a welcomed end to a long season (for both fans and players), but for others, it's a sign that postseason baseball is about to start, and every game will really start to matter soon.

Moving to fantasy baseball, let's look at four starting pitchers with good matchups on Wednesday who are widely available in fantasy leagues and have good matchups. Most stats are from MLB.com, as are the probable starters. The full streamer rankings are listed at the bottom.

Cesar Perdomo, San Francisco Giants vs. Minnesota Twins

Connor Prielipp, Minnesota Twins @ San Francisco Giants

We'll start with a game in which we can target both teams with streaming pitchers. Both hurlers get a boost from this game taking place at a major pitcher's park in San Francisco, a good reason to start here. While the Twins have been middling or worse in pretty much every area over the past month, San Francisco has actually rated out fairly well in that time, though their counting numbers are better than their rate stats. When looking only at games that a team has played at their home park, though, the Giants rank in the bottom 10 in pretty much every offensive box stat; I feel confident targeting them in this one.

Perdomo just made his big-league debut at the beginning of the month and has made four appearances totaling 19 1/3 innings. It has gone fine, with 22 hits and eight runs allowed, though Perdomo has been low with strikeouts (12). Perdomo was decent with Ks in the minor leagues, so that number could come up a bit, but he's unlikely to suddenly become an above-average strikeout pitchers, leaving his ceiling a little lower. There's a lot of uncertainty here.

Prielipp is also in his first season, but he has been with the Twins since April 22, racking up 120 1/3 innings in that time. He has been average with hits and walks and better than average with home runs and strikeouts, but Prielipp has given up a few too many runs, probably a combination of bad luck and a rough August. He has been at his best in September, though, allowing just 15 hits and five runs in 21 1/3 innings with three walks and 19 strikeouts. This seems like as good a time as any to count on the young pitcher.

Perdomo and Prielipp are both low-to-mid-level streamers. Prielipp has a little more time in the majors, but he has the tougher matchup in this one also. Both pitchers have the location in their favor by playing in Oracle Park and are worthy of consideration here.

Max Scherzer, Toronto Blue Jays @ Baltimore Orioles

Toronto and Baltimore are both several games back in the wild card race, and they have a double-header today that could end with one team eliminated from playoff contention. Scherzer will take the mound in one of those games, maybe pitching his last game in the big leagues (though that's not a guarantee). Scherzer has found some success in the second half of the season, but he also has two starts in the past six in which he gave up six and seven runs, showing that he's not untouchable. His strikeouts are down and walks up, leaving Scherzer as a questionable player to trust.

The Orioles are closer to the middle than the bottom in many stats, showing decent power but a weaker hit tool, which shouldn't be surprising given their roster. The past month has been very much the same story, leaving Baltimore as a team that's worth targeting. Most importantly for our purposes, the Orioles strike out at a top-three rate, setting a nice ceiling for opposing pitchers.

Scherzer is a low-to-mid-level streamer. He has had plenty of ups and downs, but there has been enough good to maybe see the outline of a decent ceiling here with Baltimore's strikeout numbers.

Jeffrey Springs, Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels

Well, here we are. There are always meaningless games during the last week of the season, but these are the two worst teams in the American League, fighting for the second-worst record in baseball (Colorado will almost definitely finish last). Both the pitching staff and lineup have been a major issue for the Angels, but they surely expected more out of the bats. Instead, they are near the bottom of the league in pretty much every stat, looking at a major rebuild continuing.

Springs has been on the wrong side of things in many areas, including giving up too many hits, runs, and home runs with a well-below-average strikeout rate. He has been OK with walks, but that's not nearly enough to make up for everything else. Predictably, Springs has been worse when pitching at home in a minor league park in Sacramento, but his numbers are also rough on the road. This one is also at the A's home park, leaving Springs a notch lower than he would be otherwise.

Springs is a low-level streamer. I am tempted to bump him up because the matchup is so good, but he just hasn't shown enough this season to count on him, leaving him as a guy who belongs on the waiver wire unless you're desperate to get rid of innings.
