Should You be Dropping Ranger Suarez in Fantasy Baseball Leagues After Just One Start?

Looking at several fantasy baseball drop candidates near the start of the week.

After taking a look at some fantasy baseball waiver wire options (hitters and pitchers), it's time to identify some possible drop candidates.

Also be sure to check out today's streaming options.

More droppable player data can be located on the waiver wire trends most dropped tab, which can be found on any fantasy baseball page here at FantasySP.

Should You Drop Andrew Heaney?

Heaney is down 10.5% today, bringing his overall mark down to 53%.

Heaney had been one of the bigger fantasy surprises at the beginning of this season, but after allowing four runs in back-to-back starts, he's being dropped at a rapid pace. His last two starts came against the Padres and Cubs, who are both formidable offenses.

Over seven starts this season, Heaney still has a solid 3.18 earned run average. He's 2-3 and has allowed 14 runs on 31 hits and 13 walks over 39 2/3 innings, while striking out 34 batters.

Heaney was bound to regress after his hot start, and it makes sense that his numbers dropped against tougher opponents. Things won't get easier for Heaney coming up, with his probable starts being against the Braves and Phillies.

Heaney's time as a standard league streaming option might have already come to an end. He's still a solid deep-league option, but his outlook is much lower against all opponents than it was just 10 days ago.

I'd drop Heaney in all standard redraft leagues - he could be streamed again later in the season, but if he starts against the Braves and Phillies next, I'd skip him in those starts.

Heaney could still be started in deeper leagues against those teams, but I wouldn't make it a mission to start him. Only utilize him in those starts if you need the points or innings.

Should You Drop Sal Frelick?

Frelick is rostered in 47% of leagues after a 3.4% decrease today. He dinged up his knee on Sunday and missed Monday's game, but also isn't expected to hit the injured list.

Frelick has been good at the plate and on the basepaths across his 35 games and 135 plate appearances this season. He has a .297 average and .381 on-base percentage, along with nine RBIs, seven stolen bases, 16 runs scored, 13 walks and just 16 strikeouts.

He's cooled off over the past four games, with just one hit in that span. Frelick added two walks in those contests to still put up a couple fantasy points.

Frelick isn't going to provide you with a ton of power, even though he's batting fifth most games. He avoids negative fantasy points by not striking out a bunch, and some stolen bases help make up for the lack of power.

Frelick is still a good deep-league redraft option, and I'd try to hold on to him. I get if you need his roster spot to be producing, but I also anticipate Frelick back in the lineup soon, maybe as early as Tuesday.

He'll likely top out as a deep-league option, but he does have value in dynasty/keeper leagues as well as just a 25-year-old outfielder in his third MLB season.

Should You Drop Ranger Suarez?

Suarez was let go in 7% of leagues - he's now owned in 55% of leagues.

He made his season debut on Sunday, getting rocked across 3 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks. Suarez allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out six batters.

It was a rough start to the season for Suarez, but we're still talking about a pitcher who had a 3.46 ERA across 27 starts and 150 2/3 innings last season.

The matchup on Sunday wasn't favorable, and nerves probably played a role in Suarez's rough outing. Better fantasy outings should be in store moving forward.

Things should improve in his next start, when he takes on the Guardians. Suarez faces the Pirates likely after that, so he's lined up for some fantasy success.

I get dropping him after he was rocked, but I'd be happy to start Suarez against Cleveland and Pittsburgh in deeper leagues, at least. If he pitches well against Cleveland, then Suarez could be a standard league streamer against Pittsburgh.

Fantasy owners can react too much to a small sample size, and I think that's what's happening here with Suarez. Better days are ahead for the left-handed pitcher, so I'd actually consider adding him, instead of wanting to drop him.

You Should Drop Triston Casas

You'll notice the section title is different from the other ones. He's hurt and is down to 33% rostered, after being at 58% just a couple days ago.

He had knee surgery after he suffered a ruptured tendon in his left knee. Casas is out for the remainder of the season, and his long-term outlook is now murky.

Casas has had an injury-riddled career, and his latest injury is going to be his toughest challenge to recover from. Here's to hoping he can return to the big leagues in the years to come.

Across 29 games and 112 plate appearances this season, Casas had a .182 average and .277 OBP. He had 11 RBIs and walks, along with five runs scored and 27 strikeouts.

Casas can be safely dropped in all redraft formats. Hopefully you have an IR spot to stash him in in dynasty/keeper setups - if you don't, Casas might need to be dropped, especially because this injury could hamper him in the long run.

Should You Drop Kameron Misner?

Misner is down 3.1% and is now owned in just 10% of leagues synced here at FantasySP. Misner is hitless over his last three appearances, and has just three knocks over his past 10 outings.

In 30 games and 101 plate appearances so far, Misner has a .272 average and .317 OBP. He has seven doubles, three homers and a triple among his 25 total knocks, along with 11 RBIs, two stolen bases, 14 runs scored, six walks and 25 strikeouts.

The outfielder got off to a hot start this season, but he was due for some regression. The 27-year-old only had eight career MLB games coming into the season, so the hype around his strong start also fizzled in a hurry.

I get if you want to hold Misner in some fantasy setups yet, but I'd only consider keeping him in the deepest of leagues. If he continues to struggle, he should be dropped in all setups.

Should You Drop Noelvi Marte?

Marte is down to 69% rostered - he was up to nearly 75% just a couple days ago.

Marte was one of the hottest hitters in the game for a bit, but has just one hit over the past three games. He's got three hits over his past six games.

Marte's overall numbers still look really strong. He's got a .294 average and .342 OBP, along with 17 RBIs, four stolen bases, 10 runs scored, five walks and 12 strikeouts across 19 games and 73 plate appearances.

He's come off the bench in two of the team's past three contests, which could be the start of a bad trend for his fantasy outlook. He's hit cleanup in his past three starts, so it's hard to completely bail on him.

Marte is looking more like a deep-league asset, who will be streamable in standard leagues when he's hot at the plate. I agree with fantasy owners dropping him in standard leagues, but would hang on to him in deeper leagues.

He might just be a streaky hitter all season, so he'll be one to keep tabs on.
