Fantasy Baseball Week 14 Mid-Week Waiver Wire Pickups: Colton Cowser, Oscar Colas, and More!
We’re trying something a little new this week: Mid-week waivers!
There’s a lot that goes on between our weekly Monday Waiver column, so we thought we should probably do a quick pass through the waiver wire on Thursday and make sure we’re not missing anyone important.
With that, let’s dive in and see who’s popped up as a mid-week waiver add!
As always, check out the fantasy assistant for personalized waiver wire recommendations and team analysis. Make moves based on projections, strengths and weaknesses, waiver alerts, and lots more.
Top Fantasy Baseball Mid-Week Waiver Wire Adds
(ownership percentages are based on ESPN leagues)
Colton Cowser, OF, Baltimore Orioles (6.5%)
The Orioles have a seemingly endless supply of good young players in the Minors (with more on the way!), and Cowser is just the latest call-up for Baltimore. The 23-year-old debuted for the Orioles on Wednesday and went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. He doesn’t have a regular position for the O’s currently, but they’ll find a way to keep him in the lineup as long as he hits. Cowser was hitting .330 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 203 at-bats at Triple-A Norfolk, so he has the type of bat that could turn into a fantasy league-winner if he reaches his ceiling.
Bryan Bello, P, Boston Red Sox (35.5%)
I wrote about Bello a couple of weeks ago and he’s somehow still criminally under-rostered on ESPN, so I’m running it back! The Red Sox’ best young pitcher worked with Pedro Martinez over the offseason and the results speak for themselves. After missing the beginning of the season due to injury, the 24-year-old has now pitched 80.0 innings with a 6-5 record, 3.04 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 70 strikeouts. Even more importantly, he’s allowed more than two runs just once since April 29. He posted a 2.67 ERA in May, a 2.14 ERA in June, and has a 2.57 ERA with eight strikeouts through 7.0 July innings. Make sure Bello isn’t on your waiver wire.
Dane Dunning, P, Texas Rangers (31.9%)
Similar to Bello, Dunning shouldn’t be available in so many leagues. Through 86.1 innings, the right-hander is 8-1 with a 2.61 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts. Would it be nice if he struck out more batters? Sure. But then he wouldn’t be available on waivers in the beginning of July. Dunning is on a first-place team and should push for 15 wins this season. I’m not sure he’ll keep this up as he’s almost a full two points below his ERA of the past two seasons, but it’s worth adding him to see if he can!
Oscar Colas, OF, Chicago White Sox (3.0%)
While Cowser might be the prospect prize of the week, Colas isn’t far behind. The 24-year-old just got recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and should see immediate playing time. He’s been raking in Charlotte with seven home runs over his last 10 games, so we’ll have to hope he adjusts Major League pitching better than he did when he hit .211 in April. I can’t guarantee Colas won’t be back in Charlotte within a few weeks, but it’s most definitely worth taking a flier on him just in case he sticks.
Luke Raley, 1B/OF, Tampa Bay Rays (15.7%)
If you just looked at Raley’s numbers, you’d be confused as to why he’s available in almost 85% of ESPN leagues. The 26-year-old is hitting .277 with 45 runs, 15 home runs, 36 RBI, and nine steals. Actually, I’m still confused as to why he’s available in so many leagues. I think it’s because he mostly only plays against righties, but stats are stats – even if they come as part of a platoon. Anyway, Raley has hit .350 with three home runs over the last week and should be picked up in any league where he’s available.
