Sean Murphy's playing time crunch and slumping bat dampen fantasy appeal

Sean Murphy has cooled off considerably at the plate, hitting just .154 over his last four games and .192 over the past two weeks. Playing for the first-place Braves (88-62), the veteran backstop has settled into a backup role behind Drake Baldwin since returning from the injured list, sharply restricting his weekly opportunities.

Having missed extended time this season, Murphy's .210 average and three home runs through 24 appearances fall directly in line with our modest season projection of a .219 average. While flashes of pull-side pop remain, his elevated strikeout rate over the past two weeks suggests his batting average woes are sustainable rather than bad luck.

Atlanta faces a six-game road slate, kicking off against Chicago where Murphy could capitalize on favorable matchups against David Peterson (5.47 ERA) and Kevin Gausman (4.72 ERA) before a tougher weekend series in Houston against Hunter Brown (3.61 ERA). However, given his limited starts as the secondary catcher, he cannot be trusted in standard formats. Sit.
