Fantasy Football Week 7 Wide Receiver Who Should I Start? Quentin Johnston, Xavier Worthy, and More
Comparing Quentin Johnston to three receivers who he has been matched up with often on the FantasySP start/sit tool.
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston was off to a hot start this season before missing Week 6 with an injury. He leads his team with 377 receiving yards and four touchdowns despite that missed game.
Healthy for Week 7, fantasy owners are back to wondering where Johnston fits into the fantasy world. That has him all over our FantasySP start/sit tool.
Let's look at Johnston and three other wide receivers who he has been compared to often on the start/sit tool. We'll do a head-to-head quick-hit exercise to determine the best starter in each situation. Most stats are from NFL.com.
Use FantasySP's Who Should I Start? tool to compare players and help make your toughest lineup decisions each week!
Quentin Johnston, Los Angeles Chargers vs. Indianapolis Colts
Johnston is averaging more than five catches and 75 yards per game with four touchdowns in five games. That made him a top-10 fantasy receiver in both standard scoring and PPR after Week 5, and he's still in the top 11 in both categories despite missing Week 6.
Those are the type of numbers that would make a guy a must-start fantasy player, but Johnston has a history of underperforming, so owners are understandably wary of blindly putting him into their lineups.
Indianapolis seems like a tougher matchup because they have played so well, but there's a chance to find some success against this team. The Colts have allowed the 11th-fewest yards per pass attempt but the sixth-most fantasy points per game to wide receivers.
That worse performance in fantasy comes from both volume and touchdowns, as all six teams that have faced Indy have gotten at least 12 receptions and 100 receiving yards from their WRs, and receivers have scored seven total touchdowns. With Johnston's success so far, there is a chance for him to have another big game here in a nice matchup.
Ladd McConkey, Los Angeles Chargers vs. Indianapolis Colts
What better place to start than with Johnston's teammate. We know the matchup is good, and the Colts are also without cornerback Charvarius Ward for at least the next four games after he was placed on IR. Things are pointing up for the receivers here.
McConkey was the team's leading receiver last season, but he has been behind both Johnston and Keenan Allen statistically. McConkey had his best game of the season with Johnston out last week, setting season highs with seven receptions and 100 yards and catching a touchdown.
Now with Johnston back, McConkey might get squeezed with targets. Both Johnston and McConkey can thrive on the field together, but that hasn't been the case, especially as Allen has reemerged in LA.
Advice: Start Quentin Johnston over Ladd McConkey. Johnston has been the better player this season, earning him the nod here with both players on the field. McConkey could end up being the better fantasy guy at the end of the year, but performance so far points toward Johnston.
Courtland Sutton, Denver Broncos vs. New York Giants
Sutton is averaging 4.5 receptions and 63.7 yards per game with three touchdowns. He is on pace to essentially match his numbers from last year. That has him among the top 20 receivers in both standard and PPR scoring despite two very quiet games when he combined for two catches and 23 yards.
The Giants are right in the middle in yards per pass attempt allowed, but they have given up the fourth-most fantasy points per game to wide receivers. That disparity comes because teams have racked up volume against New York, averaging 14.2 receptions and 178.3 receiving yards per game from WRs.
We have Denver's top receiver here who leads the team in every major receiving stat facing a vulnerable Giants team that isn't terrible on defense but does struggle against wide receivers. Sutton has a positive outlook.
Advice: This is a tough one. Johnston has been the better player and is in the better passing game, but Sutton isn't terribly far behind individually, and he is the top target on his team, while Johnston has a little more competition for targets. In a near 50/50 play, I'll say to start Quentin Johnston over Courtland Sutton by a slim margin.
Xavier Worthy, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Las Vegas Raiders
After missing pretty much the entirety of the first three games, Worthy has now played in three, looking better in Weeks 4 and 5 before a quiet game last week. He combined for 11 receptions, 125 receiving yards, and 47 rushing yards in those first two games then had a modest two catches and 20 yards in Week 6, though he did score a touchdown.
Worthy will always get touches, but Rashee Rice also returns for this one and is expected to fill the WR1 spot that he held before a major injury suffered last season (and a six-game suspension this year). We don't know how things will turn out until we see it in action, but more competition for targets means a lower fantasy ceiling.
The Raiders are like the Giants in that they rank right in the middle in yards per pass attempt allowed but have given up the seventh-most fantasy points to wide receivers. WRs have averaged 13.5 receptions, 161.8 receiving yards, and one touchdown per game against Las Vegas, making them a team to target in fantasy.
Advice: Start Quentin Johnston over Xavier Worthy. This is another close one, but Worthy has the lower floor and now has a new piece being inserted above him in the passing game. While Worthy is still a decent option this week given the matchup, I prefer Johnston here.
