Tovar Looking to Snap Out of June Slump in Minnesota
The Rockies' everyday shortstop has hit a wall lately, batting just .176 over his last seven days and a meager .190 over the past month. While he remains a fixture in the lineup for the fifth-place Rockies, who sit at 32-49 in the standings, his 30 strikeouts over his last 21 games are a major concern for fantasy managers. With teammates like Brenton Doyle currently sidelined, the offensive burden on the young infielder has increased, but he has yet to rise to the challenge.
Looking under the hood, Tovar’s current .208 season average is a significant underperformance compared to our projection of .262 and his .269 mark from 2024. While his power has flashed with four home runs in the last 30 days, the high-whiff rate suggests this cold streak is more than just bad luck. We expect his numbers to eventually migrate toward his career averages, but until he cuts down on the strikeouts, he remains a volatile asset who is difficult to trust in standard leagues.
As the week concludes, Colorado travels to Minnesota for three games against a Twins rotation featuring Taj Bradley (4.11 ERA), Mike Paredes (4.05 ERA), and Connor Prielipp (5.17 ERA). While these matchups against mid-tier and high-ERA arms are objectively favorable, Tovar’s recent form is too poor to exploit the opportunity. Unless you are desperate for a potential home run from the shortstop position, it is best to leave him on the bench until he shows signs of life. Verdict: Sit.
