Fantasy Football Week 3 WR Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Matchup Breakdowns

When in doubt in fantasy football, it's often best to go with the matchups. Going based on gut feeling isn't a science; it's a 50/50 proposition that somehow always ends up the wrong way. The numbers won't always play out the right way, but you can make yourself feel much better losing with the right process.

Let's look at three wide receivers to start and three to sit in Week 3 of the fantasy football season. Most stats are from NFL.com, and fantasy points and rankings are from FantasyPros.

Start

Josh Downs, Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans

Alec Pierce is out for at least a month after being placed on IR, leaving Indianapolis perilously thin at receiver. They signed Darius Slayton, but he and Keenan Allen aren't going to be the ones to make up the difference. Downs leads the team in targets, receptions, and yards, and he and tight end Tyler Warren are going to be the ones driving the passing game (with Jonathan Taylor helping as well).

Usually, the Texans would be a team I'd want nothing to do with; Downs would seem to fit better in the “sit” category than he would here. Houston has struggled mightily against receivers, though, allowing the third-most yards per pass attempt and the most fantasy points to WRs through two weeks.

To be fair, those games came against Josh Allen and Joe Burrow; things are likely to get much better. We can't ignore how sieve-like Houston has been against the pass, though, and with Downs surely taking a large role in the passing game, he has a decent outlook in this one.

Xavier Hutchinson, Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts

Let's go right to the other side of the Houston/Indianapolis matchup, as the Colts are one of the few teams that can match the Texans for ineptitude stopping the pass. Indy has given up the most yards per pass attempt and the second-most fantasy points per game to receivers. While Houston faced Allen and Burrow, the Colts faced Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes, so it hasn't been much easier.

Nico Collins missed Week 2 and is questionable for this one, leaving plenty of opportunities for other pass catchers if the star can't take the field. Tight end Dalton Schultz led the way last week, but Hutchinson had the most volume among the receivers, seeing nine targets (though he only caught three for 37 yards). With the matchup in his favor, Hutchinson has a chance to put up a bigger stat line in this one if Collins remains out.

There's not a big ceiling, but Hutchinson is worthy of consideration for your WR3/4/flex spot. Check Collins' status, as it directly affects how much fantasy value Hutchinson will carry into this matchup.

Adonai Mitchell, New York Jets @ Detroit Lions

Do you believe in the Jets? It was easy to explain it away when they took care of the Titans in Week 1, but New York probably should have beaten the Packers last week, a team some saw as a Super Bowl contender (after seeing Green Bay fall flat against Atlanta on Thursday night, there probably aren't many people thinking that way right now). The Jets don't look like “The Jets,” though, and that's something.

Mitchell was an afterthought as part of the Sauce Gardner trade at last year's trade deadline, but he was a second-round pick in 2024 and entered the league with some intrigue. Mitchell has nine catches and 123 yards through two games, barely behind Garrett Wilson in both categories and with the same 14 targets that Wilson has. With a capable QB under center, Mitchell looks like he could find his place in New York.

The Lions are worse than average in yards per pass attempt allowed and have given up the fourth-most fantasy points to WRs. They struggled to stop the pass and wide receivers last year, so this isn't new. We are likely to see Detroit continue to get beat in the passing game, and that gives Mitchell WR3/4/flex upside even with Wilson ahead of him in the pecking order.

Sit

Stefon Diggs and Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders vs. Seattle Seahawks

I'm going to keep pointing out the Seahawks as a team to avoid until we see at least one team figure out how to beat their defense; it might be a while. Seattle has allowed the fewest yards per pass attempt and the fewest fantasy points to wide receivers. What else do we need to say?

Diggs and McLaurin are two talented players, but neither guy is his best in 2026, and they are without quarterback Jayden Daniels for the foreseeable future. Marcus Mariota is a fine backup, but he has a much lower ceiling than Daniels, and against a team like Seattle, things could get ugly. I'm staying away from Washington's entire offense this week.

Caleb Douglas, Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs

There were real questions about who would lead the way among Miami's pass catchers, and Douglas has been the top guy so far, leading the team with seven receptions (tied with Malik Washington and De'Von Achane) and 113 yards. There's real value in having Douglas on your roster, as he could keep emerging as his rookie season goes on.

This isn't the week to put him in your lineup, though. Douglas is dealing with an ankle injury and might not play, but even if he does, he could be limited or at risk of aggravating the issue. He also has a very tough matchup, as the Chiefs have allowed the fourth-fewest yards per pass attempt and the third-fewest fantasy points per game to WRs.

Between Douglas' own issues he's dealing with (which were a problem last week also) and the tough matchup, there's no value in having him in your lineup this week. Hang onto him, but don't test fate in this one.

Jakobi Meyers and Brian Thomas Jr., Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New England Patriots

I had Meyers and Thomas listed here last week with a poor matchup against the Broncos, pointing out that Parker Washington might be OK to put in your lineup, but Meyers and Thomas were likely to struggle. That came to fruition, as Washington racked up seven catches for 98 yards, while the other two combined for just four receptions and 68 yards.

The matchup isn't quite as bad here, but New England is still an above-average defense, allowing the fifth-fewest yards per pass attempt and the 10th-fewest fantasy points to wide receivers. Washington seems to have emerged as the top option in Jacksonville, leaving the other two looking for secondary work.

Facing another stout defense, I don't like the idea of trusting Meyers or Thomas to find enough yards or receptions to have a big day. They will likely have to find the end zone to be successful, and it's tough to count on TDs, especially at a position with so many capable guys. Washington is a fine player to start, but I'm staying away from both Meyers and Thomas again.
