Jared Goff doesn't seem like a top fantasy quarterback, but he has finished in the top 10 among QBs in each of the past three seasons and is back in that group early in 2025. That has fantasy owners investigating Goff and where he stands in the fantasy hierarchy this week.

Goff has been showing up all over our FantasySP start/sit tool this weekend in the leadup to the bulk of the week's games. With talented players around him, there's always a chance for Goff to have a huge day, making him a guy who must be considered in fantasy each week.

Let's look at Goff and four guys playing in the late window/night games who he has been compared to often on the start/sit tool. We'll do a head-to-head quick-hit exercise to determine the best starter in each situation. Most stats are from NFL.com.

Use FantasySP's Who Should I Start? tool to compare players and make your toughest lineup decisions each week!

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Goff ranked as QB9 entering Week 7. He is on pace to match most of his numbers over his Detroit career, looking like vintage Goff. That's a valuable fantasy player, though he has a lower ceiling because he never runs the ball.

This is more about ruthless efficiency as a passer, as Goff is completing nearly 76% of his passes at 8.0 per attempt. That's the type of play that will have him in the MVP conversation again at the end of the season.

Tampa Bay has given up the eighth-most yards per pass attempt and the 11th-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. The Bucs have been beaten up with injuries, mostly on offense but also a bit on defense, leaving them vulnerable, and an attack like the Lions has a chance to do real damage this week.

Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts @ Los Angeles Chargers

Jones has been fantastic in 2025, surprising Indianapolis and the world. He is averaging more than 250 passing yards per game on 8.3 per attempt while completing nearly 72% of his passes. He's not doing great work running the ball, but Jones does have 76 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

That all came together to make him QB7 entering Week 7. A player who had exactly one decent season before 2025 is an honest-to-God MVP contender after six games; there's still a long way to go, but things couldn't have worked out much better for Indianapolis.

The Chargers are one of the toughest pass defenses in the league, allowing the fourth-fewest yards per pass attempt and the eighth-fewest fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. LA was a shutdown defense last season, so it's not a surprise to again see them among the best in the league.

Advice: Start Jared Goff over Daniel Jones because Goff has a much better matchup.

Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Detroit Lions

Opposing Goff is Mayfield, who has been better than the Detroit quarterback from a fantasy standpoint, ranking as QB4 entering the week. Mayfield is averaging 256.5 passing yards per game on 7.9 per attempt with 12 touchdowns and just one interception. He has added 26.3 rushing yards per game, though he hasn't scored on the ground yet.

Mayfield was a top-10 fantasy QB each of the past two seasons with Tampa Bay and looks like he is right back in that conversation. A big part of that comes from his passing prowess, of course, but Mayfield continues to run the ball, giving him a little fantasy boost each week (and helping his team greatly at the most important moments).

Detroit has allowed the ninth-most yards per pass attempt and the eighth-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. They are torn apart by injuries in the secondary right now, and we can add in Brian Branch, who is suspended for this game. A group with a lot of talent, the Lions don't have anything close to a full-strength team right now.

Advice: Start Baker Mayfield over Jared Goff. Mayfield has been better, he runs the ball, and his matchup here is probably better given the copious injuries that Detroit is dealing with on defense.

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos vs. New York Giants

Nix was drafted as a fringe weekly fantasy starter this year, just after the top guys who are in lineups every week. He hasn't played up to that level, ranking as QB13. Nix is on pace for fewer passing yards, passing touchdowns, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns than in 2024.

The Giants are right in the middle in both yards per pass attempt and fantasy points per game allowed to quarterbacks. Specific to what Nix does best, New York has held down QB rushing, allowing just 24 yards per game on the ground to quarterbacks and one touchdown.

Advice: Start Jared Goff over Bo Nix. Nix has the running advantage, but Goff has the better matchup in this game and has been the better player in 2025.

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans @ Seattle Seahawks

Stroud has been efficient but at a low volume most of this season. While he is completing nearly 71% of his passes, Stroud is averaging just 215.2 passing yards per game with eight touchdowns. He also runs a modest amount, averaging 24.4 yards per game on the ground this year.

Seattle has allowed the 11th-fewest yards per pass attempt and the 13th-most fantasy points per game to QBs, sitting near the middle overall. They have a lot of talent on defense but also a few holes that bring down the unit, leaving them vulnerable at times.

Advice: Start Jared Goff over C.J. Stroud. Goff has the better matchup and is the better fantasy player, clearly making him the choice between these two.
