Thursday's Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Adds: Davion Mitchell, VJ Edgecombe and More
Looking at several fantasy basketball waiver wire options near the start of the regular season.
Another day, another round of fantasy basketball waiver wire options.
Here is the waiver wire article from Wednesday.
Check out fantasy basketball waiver wire options on FantasySP all season long!
Should You Add Davion Mitchell?
Mitchell was great in the team's loss to the Magic on Wednesday. He recorded 16 points, 12 assists, six rebounds, two steals and one block over 34+ minutes. Mitchell made 7-of-15 shots and 2-of-6 from 3-point land. He had one turnover and four fouls.
Mitchell will have an expanded role in the early going with Tyler Herro and Kasparas Jakucionis out with injuries. Herro will be out a bit, so it makes sense to add Mitchell for a while.
Over 74 games overall last season, Mitchell averaged 7.9 points, 4.9 assists, 2.3 rebounds, 1 steal and 0.2 blocks over 27.4 minutes. He took on more after joining the Heat.
His usage and minutes in the opener should open the eyes of fantasy owners in a hurry. He's up 26.55% today and sits at 58.18% overall. He needs to be added in deeper leagues, and a good amount of standard leagues until Herro comes back - don't wait, because he could be scooped up in your league today.
Should You Add Isaiah Stewart?
Stewart is rostered in 21.82% of leagues after a 15.7% increase today.
He played nearly 25 minutes off the bench in the team's loss to the Bulls on Wednesday. Stewart had 20 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two assists. He was 8-of-14 from the floor and made both of his free throws and 3-pointers. Stewart had no turnovers and committed three fouls.
Detroit is down Jaden Ivey and Marcus Sasser to start the season, and while they don't play the same position as Stewart, their presence could mean less usage and production for Stewart.
Until they are back, Stewart could be a pretty good fantasy asset. I like the idea of adding him in some deeper leagues today. If he continues to produce similarly to the opener, then he'll be rostered in all deeper leagues in a hurry, then become a standard league option.
Take a look at your roster and see if Stewart is worth adding over some of the guys near the end of your bench.
Should You Add VJ Edgecombe?
Edgecombe is rostered in 90% of leagues after a 8.37% increase, and he should get to 100% by the time he plays another game.
He started and played 42 minutes in the team's surprise win over Boston on opening night. The rookie had 34 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Edgecombe made half of his 26 field goal attempts, 5-of-13 from deep and 3-of-6 at the free-throw line. He had two turnovers and one foul.
It was a stellar debut for the Sixers' guard. He took advantage of some extra minutes available with Jared McCain and Paul George both out. Sidenote: but if the Sixers can stay healthy, they might boast one of the best offenses in the league.
Anyways, Edgecombe needs to immediately be added in all fantasy leagues. He's going to have a big role, even when the team is at full health. With how many injury-prone players Philly rosters, there's a chance that Edgecombe gets the chance to star every night.
Let's hope you get to add Edgecombe today, but this might be the last time he's available in any fantasy leagues.
Should You Add Herbert Jones?
Jones is rostered in 71% of fantasy leagues and looked good in the opening game he played.
He played just over 36 minutes in the team's loss to the Grizzlies. Jones went for 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and steals and one block. He also had two turnovers and fouled out after committing six fouls. Jones was 6-of-14 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point land and made both of his free throws.
New Orleans was without a couple players in the opener, and lost another to injury, but I expect Jones to hold a healthy role and usage regardless. The big thing with Jones is availability, as he only got in 20 games last season. He averaged 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.5 blocks over 32.4 minutes.
Jones should be rostered in all deeper leagues, and he's worth owning in some standard leagues. I don't ever think he'll get to a point where he's a must-add player in standard leagues, but if he keeps the level of production up that he had in the opener for an extended period, it's a possibility.
He's worth tracking for those not willing to add him in standard leagues now.
Should You Add Ryan Kalkbrenner?
Kalkbrenner started and looked good across 26+ minutes for the Hornets in their blowout win over the Nets. He tallied 10 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and one assist.
Kalkbrenner made five of his six shots on the night. He had four turnovers and committed four fouls.
It was a great first showing for the rookie. The second-round pick appears to have earned a big role right away, so he needs to be added in more fantasy leagues. He's up 6.4% today and sits at 15.45% overall.
Charlotte isn't dealing with any injuries right now, so this could be sustainable for Kalkbrenner. He deserves some fantasy love in deeper leagues, and if he remains a double-double threat most nights, he could become a standard leaguer in time.
He's a player to keep tabs on, but he's definitely getting a good fantasy value boost after the opener.
Should You Add Tim Hardaway Jr.?
Hardaway is on the rise before he even takes the floor. He's sitting at 15.45% rostered after a 6.36% increase today.
He's on the Nuggets, who aren't dealing with any notable injuries at this time. Most expect him to come off the bench, but he could play enough minutes to be a valuable fantasy asset, especially in deeper leagues.
I'd wait to see his usage and production in the opener before adding him in too many more leagues. There's a chance he plays well, and gets added in a bunch more deeper leagues, so you'll want to keep an eye on his first few games with the team.
I don't see him ever getting into standard leagues while in Denver. He could maybe get there if a guy like Christian Braun or Cameron Johnson were to miss extended time though - Hardaway is one of the top backups for both those projected starters.
Should You Add Tre Jones?
Jones is up 6.29% and is rostered in 23.64% of leagues overall.
He helped the Bulls past the Pistons in the opener. Jones started and played 31+ minutes, tallying 12 points, eight assists, three steals and one rebound. He was 5-of-8 from the floor, while making one of his two free throws and his only 3-point attempt. Jones committed three fouls and had two turnovers.
He found a little fantasy life when he joined the Bulls last season. He averaged 11.5 points, 4.9 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 0.3 blocks over 25.3 minutes in 18 games and nine starts with the team. He was sparsely used in San Antonio for 28 games before that, so his overall averages are much lower.
Anyways, it appears that Jones has a pretty nice role right now for the Bulls. Chicago was without a couple players on Wednesday, including Coby White, so Jones' role and usage will change when White returns in a couple weeks.
For now though, Jones is worth some fantasy ownership in deeper leagues. At least utilize him until White is back, then re-assess things when the Bulls are at full health at guard.
There's a chance Jones is able to stick as a decent deep-league asset all season, so don't chalk his first game up to being an outlier with some teammates out.
