Backup Tight End Offers Contingency Upside While George Kittle Recovers

Jake Tonges enters the 2026 campaign positioned as the primary backup tight end in San Francisco behind George Kittle. With Kittle sidelined on the physically unable to perform list with an Achilles injury, Tonges is in line for elevated early opportunities. Coming off a 2025 season where he posted 34 receptions for 293 yards and five touchdowns, he has demonstrated reliable red-zone utility.

Our season models project Tonges for 30 receptions, 250 receiving yards, and three touchdowns (49.0 fantasy points). While the offense prioritizes established weapons like Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel Sr., Tonges faces minimal tight end competition for backup snaps following Tanner McLachlan's season-ending injury.

In draft markets, Tonges' ADP has steadily drifted downward from roughly pick 210 in July to around pick 245 in full-PPR formats. Given his low roster percentage and falling draft cost, our projections view him as an inexpensive contingency stash rather than an everyday fantasy starter.
