Fantasy Hockey Injury Report: Marchenko, Hyman Go Down as Morrissey, Chabot Near Returns

Shelmo discusses five key injury updates and what they mean for fantasy hockey managers in this Canadian market heavy edition.

Hey folks. We've got another batch of injury news to break down, and there's plenty happening across the Canadian market. The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken a huge hit after losing a top-six forward who had been producing at a point-per-game pace since joining the team.

Meanwhile, Edmonton has another injury concern involving a veteran winger who has struggled to produce consistently this season. With yet another setback, fantasy managers have to start wondering whether his health and production are becoming too much of a risk.

There is some good news on the blueline, though, with Winnipeg and Ottawa both receiving encouraging signs regarding the potential returns of their top defensemen. Neither player is guaranteed to be ready just yet, but getting these key contributors back would be a welcome boost for two Canadian teams. We'll look at what their potential returns mean for their teams and fantasy managers waiting to get them back.

We'll also check in on a young Pittsburgh Penguins center who has returned to practice following a concerning medical episode. It's encouraging to see him back on the ice, but we'll have to see how quickly he can return to game action and whether the interruption affects his momentum. As always, we'll break down the latest updates, who could benefit from these absences, and what fantasy managers should do with each player.

As always, let's dive in.

Kirill Marchenko - Toronto Maple Leafs

It's a bit of a scary situation for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are still trying to find some consistency this season. They can thump the Edmonton Oilers but then struggle to get past the Calgary Flames. Now, they've potentially lost one of their newest stars after trading for Marchenko and signing him to a long-term deal.

Marchenko fell awkwardly after taking a hit in the second period against Calgary on Monday and did not return to the game due to a lower-body injury. At this point, he is considered day-to-day, we don't have any updates yet. With Toronto scheduled to face Seattle on Wednesday, his status is worth watching closely as we wait for more information.

Fantasy outlook: Marchenko is off to an excellent start with 14 points in his first 14 games with Toronto. Managers should hold him for now, but keep a close eye on practice reports and updates from the Maple Leafs. Hopefully, this turns out to be a minor issue, because Toronto can ill afford to lose a productive top-six forward for an extended period.

Zach Hyman - Edmonton Oilers

Hyman is off to what has already been the worst start of his career, and things just keep getting worse for the Edmonton Oilers winger. With linemate Connor McDavid clipping along at three points per game, Hyman has a measly one point in just six games and is already dealing with his second injury of the season. It's been a woeful start for the grinder, who just can't seem to get anything going offensively.

Hyman left Monday's game against Detroit after suffering a head injury and is expected to miss at least a week. The Oilers need him healthy and producing if they want to get the most out of their offence, especially with McDavid playing at such an incredible level. Hopefully, this latest setback is only a short-term issue and Hyman can get back on the ice soon.

Fantasy outlook: Despite the dreadful start, Hyman remains a high-value fantasy player because he is stapled to McDavid. We can only hope he returns to full health and starts finding his scoring touch again. I'm not ready to give up on him, but managers will want to see some production once he's back before feeling comfortable about his outlook. For now, patience is the play.

Benjamin Kindel - Pittsburgh Penguins

It was a scary situation for the Pittsburgh Penguins when their young center suffered a vasovagal episode on the team flight on October 20, forcing the plane to divert. Thankfully, Kindel has made encouraging progress and returned to practice Tuesday, reporting that he feels normal again. It's great news for the 19-year-old and the Penguins after a concerning situation that understandably put hockey on the back burner.

Before the incident, Kindel had put together a promising start to the season with two goals, four points and 23 shots on goal across nine games. He has a chance to return to the Penguins' lineup Thursday against Utah if his progress continues. Given his age and the encouraging start he's had, getting back into game action and continuing to develop will be the next steps to watch.

Fantasy outlook: Kindel is an intriguing young player, particularly for managers in deeper and dynasty leagues. His four points and 23 shots in nine games show some early promise, but there is no need to rush into adding him in standard leagues just yet. The priority is making sure he's ready to return, then monitoring his role and production once he's back in the lineup.

Josh Morrissey - Winnipeg Jets

It's been a frustrating few weeks for the Winnipeg Jets, who have been without their top defenseman since he suffered a wrist injury. Morrissey was placed on injured reserve and is considered week-to-week, missing Winnipeg's last four games.

The good news is that he will travel with the Jets on their upcoming four-game road trip, which is an encouraging step in the right direction. However, travelling with the team doesn't necessarily mean he's ready to return, and his status remains uncertain.

Morrissey is a key piece of Winnipeg's blueline and plays a major role in all situations, particularly as the team's top powerplay quarterback.

Neal Pionk has stepped into Morrissey's spot during his absence, benefiting from the increased deployment and powerplay opportunity. While the Jets will be eager to get their top defenseman back, Morrissey's return could also mean a change in Pionk's role and fantasy value.

Fantasy outlook: Morrissey should be held in all leagues while managers monitor his status throughout the road trip. His powerplay role and ability to contribute across multiple categories make him too valuable to drop simply because of a multi-week absence.

Again, Pionk is worth considering as a temporary option in deeper leagues while he holds the top powerplay spot, but managers should be prepared for his deployment and production to take a hit once Morrissey returns. Keep watching Winnipeg's updates, because a return to practice would be the next meaningful sign that Morrissey is getting closer.

Thomas Chabot - Ottawa Senators

This is great news for the Ottawa Senators and their new captain, who appears to be getting close to a return after missing the past three games with an upper-body injury. HOTSAM BACHO was a full participant in Monday's practice in Vegas, although he skated on an extra defensive pairing, and the team had not yet decided whether he would play Tuesday against the Golden Knights.

Head coach Travis Green confirmed that Chabot is close, and he may return for Thursday's game against Los Angeles. This will be one of three key returning players for the Senators. If William Eklund and Linus Ullmark can follow suit, they will be back to full strength.

Chabot is an important part of Ottawa's blueline, averaging over 25 minutes of ice time per game this season. He had four points, including one goal and three assists, in nine games before the injury. Getting him back would be a welcome boost for the Senators, particularly given how heavily they rely on him in all situations. If you've been waiting on him, the latest practice report is encouraging, but make sure to confirm he's playing before putting him back into your active lineup.

Fantasy outlook: Chabot is worth holding in most leagues, especially formats that reward shots, blocks and heavy ice time alongside offensive production. His return should restore some stability to Ottawa's defense, and managers should monitor his deployment once he's back in the lineup.
