Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire: Garand Steps Up, Perfetti Heats Up, and More

Hey folks. We're back with another fantasy hockey waiver wire article, and with the NHL season getting underway, there are already some interesting names worth checking out. Injuries, strong starts and changes in lineup deployment are creating opportunities for players who may not have been on many fantasy managers' radars just a few weeks ago.

This time around, we're looking at four players who could provide a boost to your fantasy roster right now. Whether you're searching for help between the pipes, looking to capitalize on a breakout offensive start, or hoping to find a defensemen who can deliver useful production, there are some intriguing options available.

Of course, we don't want to chase every hot start and end up making unnecessary roster moves. The key is identifying players whose current opportunities could translate into meaningful fantasy value. We're going to take a peek at four names I'd be considering adding off the waiver wire.

Let's dive in and see who can help your squad this week and beyond on this Canadian Thanksgiving.

Dylan Garand - New York Rangers

This is a huge opportunity for Garand, who could find himself carrying a significant workload for the New York Rangers after the devastating news that Igor Shesterkin will miss the remainder of the season. Losing a goaltender of Shesterkin's caliber is a massive blow to a Rangers' team that was starting to build some momentum and show signs of returning to form.

Joonas Korpisalo is also expected to miss at least four weeks, leaving Garand in line for plenty of work while New York figures out its goaltending situation. The rookie tendy has already shown some promise at the NHL level, including earning his first NHL shutout earlier this month, but being thrust into an extended run of starts is a very different challenge. The Rangers may still explore other options in net, so this situation is worth monitoring closely as it develops.

Fantasy outlook: I'm viewing Garand as a clear volume pickup for the rest of the season, particularly in deeper leagues or formats where you need help accumulating goalie starts. The opportunity is there for him to see plenty of action, but I'm not necessarily rushing to add him in standard Yahoo or ESPN leagues with default settings that punish goals against.

The Rangers may struggle to provide consistent goal support, which could limit Garand's win potential even if he gets a heavy workload. Still, if you're in a league where volume matters and you're willing to take a chance on an unproven goalie, Garand is absolutely worth a look. I'd be adding him in deeper formats while keeping a close eye on any moves New York makes to address its goaltending situation.

Cole Perfetti - Winnipeg Jets

Perfetti is off to a fantastic start to the season, and the biggest reason for optimism is where he's playing in the Winnipeg lineup. This breakout kid has been skating alongside Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele on the top line, giving him an opportunity to produce alongside two established offensive weapons.

Through his first four games, Perfetti has recorded three goals and three assists, including four powerplay points. That's a strong start for a player who finished with just 32 points in 68 games last season after reaching 50 points the year before. To me, it seems Perfetti has been on the cusp of breaking out for a while now, and this start suggests this might be the year. Winnipeg also signed him to a five-year contract this summer, showing the organization continues to believe in what he can bring to the team.

Fantasy outlook: I'm buying into Perfetti as a waiver wire target, especially while he's getting top-line minutes with Connor and Scheifele and seeing time on the first powerplay unit. I've already grabbed Perfetti in one of my leagues where he was available, and I'll be holding him for the season. I'd suggest you do the same.

He has already shown he can reach the 50-point mark, and this deployment gives him a chance to get back there and potentially do even more if he can maintain it. Obviously, we shouldn't expect him to keep scoring at this early pace all season, but the opportunity is legitimate and makes him worth adding before he's rostered in more leagues. If he's still available in your league, I'd be looking to pick him up now rather than waiting for another week of production to push his roster percentage higher.

Viktor Arvidsson - Detroit Red Wings

Arvidsson has gotten off to a strong start in Detroit, recording four points through his first four games, with all three of his goals coming on the powerplay. The veteran winger signed a two-year, $5M AAV contract with the Red Wings after putting up 25 goals and 54 points in 69 games with the Boston Bruins last season.

He's currently skating alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond on Detroit's top line and is also getting a look on the first powerplay unit. That deployment gives him some legitimate offensive upside, especially with Larkin back in the lineup after missing the first two games of the season - though we know with the trade rumours this is not likely to last, as the former captain should be on his way out this season. Arvidsson has already shown he can provide useful scoring when healthy, and his early production suggests he could be a worthwhile addition for fantasy managers, given his early production and elite deployment opportunities.

Fantasy outlook: I'm interested in Arvidsson as a waiver wire pickup, particularly in leagues that reward powerplay production and goals. He's getting valuable deployment with Detroit's top offensive players, and his ability to score gives him some appeal beyond deeper leagues.

The obvious concern is whether he can maintain this level of production over a full season, especially given his age and injury history. I wouldn't expect him to keep scoring a powerplay goal every other game, but if he holds onto his current role, he could be a useful source of goals and powerplay points. He's worth adding in most leagues where you need forward help, and I'd take advantage of the opportunity while he's producing.

Jared Spurgeon - Minnesota Wild

Spurgeon is another player benefiting from an unfortunate injury situation, as Brock Faber remains out indefinitely after undergoing surgery for a fractured skull. Faber's absence leaves a massive hole on Minnesota's blue line, and Spurgeon has been the one stepping into a bigger role. He's now skating on the top pairing alongside Quinn Hughes and seeing time on the second powerplay unit, giving him an opportunity to contribute at both ends of the ice.

Spurgeon has always been a defensive bulwark with some offensive touch, and he's already started taking advantage of the extra responsibility with a goal and an assist through his first two games. At 36, he's not necessarily a player you'd expect to suddenly break out offensively, but the increased deployment makes him an intriguing option while Faber remains sidelined.

Fantasy outlook: I'm looking to ride Spurgeon's increased deployment for as long as Faber is out. He's not going to replace everything Faber brings to Minnesota, but the added minutes alongside Hughes and the second powerplay unit opportunity give him a path to useful fantasy production.

His defensive game can also help in leagues that reward blocks and other peripherals, making him more than just a speculative offensive pickup. The biggest concern is whether he can stay healthy while taking on the extra workload, but with no clear timetable for Faber's return, there's enough opportunity here to make Spurgeon worth adding. I'd be targeting him in deeper leagues and formats that value defensemen, then reassessing once Faber is ready to return.
