The Signing and Some Stats
Njoku signed a one-year deal worth $8 million. It was a move that was reported on Monday.
The tight end met with the team following the 2026 NFL draft, and now will join a new organization for the first time in his career.
The 29-year-old was drafted 29th overall by the Browns in 2017. He played in 118 games over the past nine seasons with Cleveland.
He has 4,062 receiving yards on 384 catches and 588 targets for his career. Njoku has caught 34 touchdown passes.
His best season was in 2023, when he caught 81 of his 123 targets for 882 yards and six touchdowns. Njoku has three other seasons with 500 or more receiving yards, and has caught at least four touchdown passes in all but two seasons.
Njoku got lost on a mostly bad offense over his career with Cleveland. Moving to the Chargers instantly makes this his best situation he's been a part of.
Outlook in LA
The Chargers have 2025 fifth-round pick Oronde Gadsden in the tight end room, and Charlie Kolar was another pickup this offseason. There's a chance Njoku leapfrogs both of them on the depth chart and leads the position in 2026.
Gadsden did some solid things in his rookie year, but the addition of Njoku tells you that the team doesn't fully believe in him yet. I expect the Chargers to have Gadsden and Njoku on the field a bunch, and Kolar could also carve out a role as well.
At receiver, LA has Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Tre' Harris as projected starters. Rookie Brenen Thompson, Keandre Lambert-Smith and Derius Davis are among some depth options in that room.
At running back, LA has Omarion Hampton, Keaton Mitchell, Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson. And of course, Justin Herbert is the team's quarterback.
It's a pretty solid offense overall, but it feels like it could use another piece or two. I think that's why the Chargers decided to add Njoku.
The signing gives them another tight end option, and maybe the lead guy at that position. Njoku could become a trustworthy target for Herbert, and be as high as No. 3, or even 2, in the passing game overall.
If it all comes together in LA, this offense should be above average, but it just feels a player or two short of becoming elite.
Njoku's Fantasy Outlook
I like this landing spot for Njoku, but for now, he's just a deep-league fantasy asset in my eyes. Things could definitely change in time though.
Njoku and Herbert will have to develop some chemistry over the summer and training camp, and then we'll have to see what kind of role Njoku is lined up to play for LA.
If Njoku is slated to start, his status as a deep-league asset becomes even stronger, and then the tight end could be an option in standard leagues. If he clearly is the top tight end, and is on the field enough, Njoku could become a weekly starter in standard leagues.
The tight end position isn't a super strong one, so Njoku could still battle for a top-10 finish at the position. He'd need to stay healthy and deliver somewhat consistently for that to become a reality, but I at least think it's a possibility.
So while I view Njoku as a deep-league fantasy asset for now, I think he's a name to keep in mind as the season closes in. Njoku could become a fantasy surprise in 2026, so be keeping tabs on him.
This signing hurts the outlooks for Gadsden and Kolar, and might take some production away from the receivers, especially any non-starters.
The move doesn't really impact the backfield too much. Hampton should be the workhorse back, and best fantasy option by a good bit.
The signing is big for Herbert. It gives him another passing target, and ups the passing game potential a little bit.
It's a smart move in the real world, as the Chargers get another offensive weapon as they look to make some noise in the AFC. Don't sleep on this move.
