Fantasy Football Week 16 Streaming Defenses: Chiefs, Saints, and More
Three D/ST squads with good matchups in Week 16 that are widely available in fantasy leagues.
As we approach the end of the season, stress rises with every fantasy football move. Despite all the work you put in, all the hours you spend anguishing, it comes down to luck and timing in the end, making owners often feel helpless.
Offensive performance is generally more consistent than defensive, so you can't always count on your top fantasy option the same way at D/ST that you can at RB or WR. When you're choosing your fantasy defense, it's often about the matchup as much as the team you are choosing for your lineup. That makes defensive streamers important every week, but especially in the fantasy playoffs.
Let's look at three D/ST units with good matchups in Week 16 that are widely available in fantasy leagues and can easily be picked up and inserted into your lineup. Most stats are from NFL.com.
Use FantasySP's defensive rankings to find the teams and players with the best matchups each week!
Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay's offense can be explosive at their best, but they have also had struggles at times, partly brought on by injuries. They have gotten healthier and might be ready to finish the season at their best, but the Bucs haven't been the machine that they seemed to turn into at times last season.
After averaging 29.5 points per game last season (fourth best), Tampa is down at 23.4 this year, right in the middle of the league. That's fine, but it lowers their ceiling as a team, particularly with their defense struggling. There's a reason the Bucs are laboring in a bad division.
The Panthers have had times at which they looked like an above-average defense and times on the other side; they settle in somewhere close to the middle. That is impressive given that Carolina may have had the worst defense in the league last season, but they're not scary; they can be beaten.
Carolina's D/ST is just a low-level streamer in this case. Tampa Bay can have a big offensive game any given week, and they now have their full complement of running backs and wide receivers all healthy at the same time. You might be able to find a better fantasy option, but if you find yourself stuck, the Panthers are a team you can probably pick up late in the week.
Kansas City Chiefs @ Tennessee Titans
Tennessee is one of the best offenses to target with D/ST groups in fantasy. Rookie quarterback Cameron Ward has been the most-sacked player all year, and he is tied at the top currently with Geno Smith and Justin Herbert, having gone down 49 times. His seven interceptions aren't too bad, but Ward has also lost six fumbles.
The Titans have scored the second-fewest points, ahead of only the Raiders. They are short on talent at nearly every offensive position, something that hasn't helped Ward grow. We won't know much about his true talent level for a few more years, but it's not a great start to the top overall pick's career.
The Chiefs lost Patrick Mahomes and have been eliminated from playoff contention, leaving Kansas City with something that they haven't had in about a decade: meaningless games. KC could choose to rest guys as the season winds down, but the defense should still be fine for now.
Kansas City has given up just 19.1 points per game, the fifth fewest. Their D/ST group is owned in less than half of fantasy leagues, but they aren't as widely available as the other two teams here, so you might not be able to grab them; they will surely be popular this week against the Titans.
Throw in a waiver claim on the Chiefs and enjoy a great outlook in the fantasy playoffs. There are no guarantees when talking about this position, but Tennessee offers about as good a chance as anyone at a strong week.
New Orleans Saints vs. New York Jets
Several teams are fighting for the unofficial title of lowliest franchise of 2025, and the Jets are a prime contender. They were just beaten 48-20 by Jacksonville, and New York is looking at the prospect of starting undrafted rookie Brady Cook the rest of the season. They play the Patriots and Bills to finish the year, so this is probably the Jets' last chance at a victory.
There just really isn't much reason to expect New York to pull out the win, though, especially on the road. They are dealing with injuries on both sides of the ball and traded away two of their best players at the deadline, leaving a team short on both depth and top-line talent.
The Saints aren't great defensively, but they rank toward the middle in a lot of categories (like points, yards per pass attempt, and yards per rush attempt allowed). They can at least approximate an average group, and when the matchup is heavily in their favor, that's good enough.
There's a decent ceiling here for New Orleans, making them a sneaky play that also carries plenty of risk. This is a bad football team that could have a terrible game any day, but they have looked functional and have a great matchup in Week 16.
