Summary
Nix is the next guy after the five potential first-round quarterbacks. There is a significant gap between him and the rest of the pack ahead of him. Many projected him to fall just outside of the first round. We don't believe he will go that high. It would surprise us if he didn't fall at least to the back half of Round 2 and possibly even into the third round.
Someone could reach for him because he's a quarterback, but there will be far superior players on the board throughout the second round and the sixth QB drafted doesn't bring value if you draft him that high. This is a mediocre player at a position people are desperate for. It will be interesting to see where he lands and if he gets a shot to compete for a starting job with so many QB-needy teams out there.
Strengths
- Good athlete who can escape and make plays with his feet in the open field
- Diagnoses things well prior to the snap
- Will attempt to work through his options
- Quick release
- Good velocity on his passes
- Can find receivers make plays with his arm while scrambling
- Strong pocket presence
- Hard-nosed runner when he takes off
Weaknesses
- Looks hesitant and scared at times when the blitz comes at him
- Footwork needs work
- Struggles to make plays at times when his first option is gone
- Lapses in decision-making on occasion
- Deep ball is too flat
- Targets his short-area targets too often
- Panics under pressure and makes subpar throws that usually fall short
- Tends to sail passes in tight windows, particularly in the end zone
Our Take
Nix has a shot to be a solid backup quarterback in the NFL. However, that's his ceiling and you don't draft a player like that on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. We don't have high hopes for him as you can tell because we ranked him behind other players we don't have high hopes for but are still better than him. He will be a non-factor as a starting QB in the NFL.
