The NBA trade deadline is nearly a month away yet, but a big trade went down on Wednesday night. Let's break it down from a fantasy basketball perspective.

The Atlanta Hawks sent Trae Young to the Washington Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. There were no picks involved with the deal.

Trae Young Fantasy Breakdown

Young is obviously one of the more notable players in the NBA, but he's only logged 10 games played so far in the 2025-26 season.

He's averaging 19.3 points, 8.9 assists, 1.5 rebounds, 1 steal and 0.1 blocks over 28 minutes a night. Young is shooting 41.5% overall and he's 30.5% from 3-point land.

Young averages 25.2 points per game for his career, along with 9.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1 steal and 0.2 blocks over 34.3 minutes a night. He's a career 43.2% shooter with a 35.1% clip from deep.

So don't read too much into his time with the Hawks to begin the season. Young should be a high-end fantasy guard once he takes the court again.

Wizards Fantasy Outlook with Young

Young will lead a pretty young Washington team now. His presence will hurt the fantasy outlooks for Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson and other guards, as Young will be in charge of the offense now.

I think Young's presence will help Kyshawn George, who is the top option at shooting guard for Washington. With Young commanding so much defensive attention, it could open things up for George.

Bilal Coulibaly is the top small forward, with Justin Champagnie the top backup. Champagnie gets plenty of run and usage with Khris Middleton being the top power forward. Young's presence should help all those forwards get more open shots, so increased shooting percentages could bump their fantasy values up a bit.

I think Young's presence is a big-time help for Alexandre Sarr, the team's center. Marvin Bagley III is another decent fantasy option at center. When fully healthy, Sarr should still be the team's No. 2 offensive weapon after Young, and I think his fantasy production will increase a bit, so I like the idea of acquiring Sarr for the stretch run.

Having McCollum and Kispert as the return opens some playing time in Washington. Young will cover a lot of the minutes, but there will be a few other minutes to cover, so Washington's game logs will be worth watching when Young joins the mix, and the team is at full health.

McCollum and Kispert Fantasy Breakdowns

McCollum is on the back nine of his career as a 34-year-old, but he still has some gas in the tank. He's averaging 18.8 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks over 30.9 minutes a night, while shooting 45.4% overall and 39.3% from deep.

He's still averaging 30.9 minutes a night, and is shooting better than he did last season, but still has lower averages across most stats.

Kispert has been a decent role player over his five-year career. He's appeared in 19 games this season, averaging 9.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.2 blocks over 19.5 minutes a night. Kispert is shooting 49.6% overall and he's 39.5% from deep.

He's posted better numbers in the past, but was also playing more minutes a night.

Hawks Fantasy Outlook with McCollum and Kispert

I'll be interested to see how McCollum and Kispert fit into the Hawks' rotation moving forward. Atlanta looks to be retooling, so adding an aging McCollum to the mix isn't the smartest idea.

Dyson Daniels and Luke Kennard are some top options at point guard, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kennard are the top shooting guards. Those are the two spots where McCollum could play, so it's possible those three Hawks see slight decreases in production, as they've got to their averages without Young around much this season.

Zaccharie Risacher and Jalen Johnson are a couple young forwards who are now primed for bigger roles with Young out of the mix. I like Risacher, Johnson and Daniels to lead the Hawks moving forward, but we'll see how things shake out after the dust of the trade settles.

Vit Krejci, Mouhamed Gueye, Asa Newell, Kennard, Alexander-Walker and Kispert are some other forward options for the Hawks, but none of them really stand out.

Onyeka Okongwu and Kristaps Porzingis are the top centers, with Gueye also being able to help out there. Okongwu and Porzingis both have solid fantasy outlooks, and could take on more without Young around now.

Atlanta is more the team to watch after the trade, because outside Daniels, Johnson and Risacher, I'm not exactly sure how things will shake out. It might take some time to get answers, so be ready to add and drop players as things play out.

Final Thoughts

I was rather unimpressed with this trade.

I feel like Atlanta didn't get much back for Young, and that this move will set the Hawks back moving forward. Johnson's fantasy owners have to be thrilled, and Daniels and Risacher are now better options too.

I wouldn't be surprised if Atlanta keeps retooling the roster before the trade deadline, and we'll keep tabs on the team's best fantasy asset as time passes.

Washington got the star player in the deal and didn't have to give up much. The team is rebuilding, but Young could launch the team's rebuild ahead a good bit.

There's not many fantasy outlooks in Washington that are severely impacted by the deal, but it will at least be interesting to see the shifts in each player when Young joins the team.

Time will tell who wins the deal, but I honestly don't see a way that the Hawks win the trade.
