2023 NFL Free Agency Frenzy: Where Will DeAndre Hopkins Land?
The NFL offseason has always seen many exciting trades happen. Each team is trying to acquire a player who can go on and change the fortunes of a franchise for good. Additionally, each offseason has seen some or other trades that have been predicted to define the upcoming season. One of the players involved in trades like this is the veteran receiver, DeAndre Hopkins.
Although Hopkins has been a little cryptic about his trade in the offseason, there might finally be some clarity in terms of his trade. Although the Arizona Cardinals have not confirmed anything, rumors have circulated in the league. Hopkins could soon be catching passes and making touchdowns for Bill Belichick. The news comes in light of the Cleveland Browns having no interest in reuniting DeAndre Hopkins with Deshaun Watson. They have informed the media that they don’t intend to pursue his services. That could also be due to the fact that as he enters his age 31 season, Hopkins may have only indicated Super Bowl contenders as his destinations.
The dominant player had a no-trade clause in his contract but lost it due to the suspension he received last year. Hopkins was forced to miss his team's first six games for violating the NFL's anti-doping policy. Despite a limited number of games, he still dominated all the other receivers on the Cardinals with a total of 717 yards and three touchdowns.
While Hopkins to the Patriots was one of many speculated offseason deals, there hadn't been much clarity about it. However, some recent updates have made it clear that Hopkins in New England is anything but a confirmed deal. It seems that there are only two things holding the case up. Interestingly, the main reason behind this is Bill Belichick's overthinking. Hopkins is coming off the lowest totals of his career, and “D-Hop” has a contract valid until the conclusion of the 2024 season.
While Belichick clearly wants Hopkins, he's not willing to give up too much for the receiver. There are reports circulating that the Cardinals have inquired about Patriots receivers DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne, which is also the reason why a deal hasn’t happened yet. However, the Patriots could easily consider another method of compensation, as the deal is very likely to happen since the Cardinals are very open to trading Hopkins as they are in a midst of a rebuild. In three seasons with the Cardinals, Hopkins has been relatively healthy and a dangerous weapon.
Fans don’t seem very convinced by the news regarding the potential trade. However, with the way off-season trades and outings have gone, anything seems possible in terms of personnel changes. Plus, the willingness of an experienced coach like Bill Belichick to build a team to his liking and his ability to make a trade of this magnitude makes this that much more believable.
On the other hand, the Tennessee Titans could see a major improvement and return to glory should they be able to obtain the services of DeAndre Hopkins. The Titans were at the bottom of the league in terms of wide receivers after losing A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles last season. The Titans were never able to overcome the massive loss in production and had a tough time moving the ball down the field and finding the end zone. Bringing in Hopkins would give them a versatile threat instantly, and somebody who can make impressive plays down the field in decisive moments.
