Fantasy Hockey Trade Deadline Day Recap: Part 3 | Brad Marchand, Brandon Carlo, Fabian Zetterlund and More
Shelmo breaks down all of the remaining trades on NHL trade deadline day in part three of this series.
Again, we're still going, folks! All day we monitored the trade deadline (part 1 story, part 2 story) and here is my part three recap of all of the trades that happened throughout the day right up until the 3 p.m. buzzer, that brought the end of trade eligibility to the NHL. This is a wrap up so it has all the rest of the trades, so this is a bit longer of a read.
Grab a final iced capp, and strap yourself in for the last time. Let's dive into part three of my full list of all the deals that broke on trade deadline day.
The Blue Jackets and Sharks Trade
To the Columbus Blue Jackets: Luke Kunin
To the San Jose Sharks: Fourth-round pick (2025)
A depth forward deal for the Blue Jackets at best. Not much to say here, and this has no fantasy impact.
Kunin has 11 goals, seven assists, and 46 penalty minutes as a forward in 63 games played. He also has 95 shots on goal, 163 hits, and 64 blocked shots. Also of note he has a +/- of -24. Yikes!
The Devils and Penguins Trade
To the New Jersey Devils: Cody Glass, Jonathan Gruden
To the Pittsburgh Penguins: Chase Stillman, Max Graham, third-round pick (2027)
Another depth forward move here. This seems to be a theme here, and also doesn't have a huge impact on fantasy, or the Devils really - but it will help having a serviceable forward to help deal with injuries in Glass who is the only notable player in this deal.
Glass has four goals, 11 assists, and two powerplay points as a forward in 51 games played. He also has 78 shots on goal, 43 hits, and 31 blocked shots.
Gruden is a fourth-round pick in 2018, Stillman is a first-round pick in 2021, and Graham is a fifth-round pick in 2024 and none of them have played an NHL game this season.
The Panthers and Bruins Trade
To the Florida Panthers: Brad Marchand
To the Boston Bruins: Conditional second-round pick (2027) - if Marchand plays more than 25% of the first two playoff rounds with the Panthers this year, the pick becomes a first-round pick (2028)
This is an absolute blockbuster of blockbusters. This trade in itself tells the world that the Bruins are selling, and nobody is safe. The captain of 1000+ games, who is the heart and soul of this team, is moving for the sunshine state.
Now imagine a line with Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, and Marchand. I would coin this the “keep your head up” line. They would come at you like an absolute freight train.
The rats will come flying on the ice, but will they be for the Panthers, or will they be for Marchand?
Marchand is built for the playoffs, and plays a very physical, get under your skin, type of game. That said, his multiple back surgeries have slowed him down, so he isn't quite the player he used to be. Still a pest, though. Definitely still a pest.
Marchand has 21 goals, 26 assists, and 13 powerplay points as a forward in 61 games played. He also has 175 shots on goal, 66 hits, and 27 blocked shots.
The Maple Leafs and Bruins Trade
To the Toronto Maple Leafs: Brandon Carlo, retain 15% of Carlo's contract
To the Boston Bruins: Fraser Minten, first-round pick (2026)
A great example of Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving filling holes. This is the second position the Maple Leafs needed to bolster. Along with forward Scott Laughton, the Maple Leafs are now poised to compete in the best division in the NHL.
Carlos brings with him more grit, a winning pedigree, and a gritty defense first playstyle. Another similar style to Laughton, both players play hard minutes and kill penalties and have a defensive playstyle. Exactly what the Maple Leafs needed. It's not often the Maple Leafs
Carlo has one goal, eight assists, and 24 penalty minutes as a defenseman in 63 games played. He also has 64 shots on goal, 64 hits, and 119 blocked shots.
Minton has two goals, two assists, and one powerplay point as a forward in 15 games played. He also has 16 shots on goal, 26 hits, and eight blocked shots.
The Avalanche and Flyers Trade
To the Colorado Avalanche: Erik Johnson
To the Philadelphia Flyers: Givani Smith
This is a fairly nothing burger trade. Both players involved are up and down between the NHL and AHL.
Johnson has one goal, two assists, and 11 penalty minutes as a defenseman in 22 games played. He also has 14 shots on goal, 40 hits, and 14 blocked shots.
Smith has 13 games played and has no real stats of significance.
The Senators and Sharks Trade
To the Ottawa Senators: Fabian Zetterlund, Tristen Robins, fourth-round pick (year TBD)
To the San Jose Sharks: Noah Gregor, Zack Ostapchuk, second-round pick (2025)
This is a big trade for the Senators. Acquiring Zetterlund is going to be a huge addition to their forward core. This top six forward can be a sneaky point producer, while also throwing the body and putting himself in front of pucks way to defend.
Zetterlund is the biggest piece of this deal, and will have an uptick in production in fantasy league. He is taken in most league with an 80%+ roster rate through all leagues. While not as big of a piece, Gregor was a decent depth forward going the other way.
Zetterlund has 17 goals, 19 assists, and six powerplay points as a forward in 64 games played. He also has 141 shots on goal, 115 hits, and 63 blocked shots.
Robins is a second-round pick from 2020. This forward has not played an NHL game yet this season.
Gregor has four goals, two assists, and 17 penalty minutes as a forward in 40 games played. He also has 46 shots on goal, 76 hits, and 25 blocked shots.
Ostapchuk has one goal, three assists, and 26 penalty minutes as a forward in 43 games played. He also has 20 shots on goal, 86 hits, and 11 blocked shots.
The Utah and Blackhawks Trade
To the Utah Hockey Club: Shea Weber (Contract), Victor Soderstrom, Aku Raty
To the Chicago Blackhawks: Fifth-round pick (2026)
A salary cap dump here. The Blackhawks took on Weber's contract and two prospects who have not played in the NHL yet.
Soderstrom is a first-round pick in 2019 and is a defenseman, and Raty is a fifth-round pick from 2019 and is a forward.
The Bruins and Sabres Trade
To the Boston Bruins: Henri Jokiharju
To the Buffalo Sabres: Fourth-round pick (2026)
This is likely to fill the roster and Jokiharju is coming in to replace Carlo who was traded earlier to the Maple Leafs.
Jokiharju has three goals and assists respectively, and 12 penalty minutes as a defenseman in 42 games played. He also has 44 shots on goal, 34 hits, and 31 blocked shots.
The Penguins and Maple Leafs Trade
To the Pittsburgh Penguins: Connor Dewar, Conor Timmins
To the Toronto Maple Leafs: TBD
From what I gather, this was strictly a moving contracts out type deal. A couple depth players who were in and out of the lineup were dealt to the Penguins to free up the number of contracts the Maple Leafs had in the system.
It sounds like the return will end up being late round draft picks, but this is so far unconfirmed.
Dewar has zero goals, three assists, and five penalty minutes as a forward in 31 games played. He also has 28 shots on goal, 80 hits, and 18 blocked shots.
Timmins has two goals, six assists, and 24 penalty minutes as a defenseman in 51 games played. He also has 51 shots on goal, 40 hits, and 77 blocked shots.
The Sabres and Rangers Trade
To the Buffalo Sabres: Erik Brannstrom
To the New York Rangers: Nicolas Aube-Kubel
Another nothing burger trade here, swapping similar depth players' positions, and neither are NHL roster mainstays.
Brannstrom has three goals, five assists, and one powerplay point as a defenseman in 28 games played. He also has 33 shots on goal, 14 hits, and 39 blocked shots.
Aube-Kubel has one goal, one assist, and 17 penalty minutes as a forward in 19 games played. He also has 18 shots on goal, 33 hits, and three blocked shots.
The Devils and Kraken Trade
To the New Jersey Devils: Daniel Sprong
To the Seattle Kraken: Seventh-round pick (2026)
Another minor trade here, and the first of three involving the Devils picking up small pieces. The once World Juniors legend and second-round in Sprong has spent most of this season in the AHL.
Sprong has two goals, three assists, and one powerplay point as a forward in 19 games played. He also has 31 shots on goal, 11 hits, and zero blocked shots.
The Devils and Islanders Trade
To the New Jersey Devils: Dennis Cholowski
To the New York Islanders: Adam Beckman
Again, the second minor deal with low impact players for the Devils.
Cholowski has three goals, seven assists, and two powerplay points as a defenseman in 33 games played. He also has 26 shots on goal, five hits, and 30 blocked shots.
Beckman was a third-round pick in 2019. The forward has not played an NHL game this season.
The Hurricanes and Predators Trade
To the Carolina Hurricanes: Mark Jankowski
To the Nashville Predators: Fifth-round pick (2026)
Well, the Canes couldn't just keep sending players out and receiving picks could they? Eventually they need some bodies on the roster, or at least in the system. This is shoring that up as a depth piece.
Jankowski has four goals, five assists, and 15 penalty minutes as a forward in 41 games played. He also has 45 shots on goal, 23 hits, and 20 blocked shots.
The Bruins and Devils Trade
To the Boston Bruins: Daniil Misyul
To the New Jersey Devils: Marc McLaughlin
Again, the Bruins can't just sell their entire roster for picks and not replace them. And again, the Devil's keep acquiring players for the system. Both small time players with no NHL or fantasy impact.
Misyul has only one game played this year as a defenseman, and no noteworthy stats.
McLaughlin has two goals as a forward in 12 games played. He also has 13 shots on goal, 23 hits, and six blocked shots.
