Trade Details and Stats

The Jazz added Jaren Jackson Jr., Jock Landale, John Konchar and Vince Williams Jr., while sending Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang and three future first-round picks to Memphis.

Jackson is the headline player in the deal. In 45 games this season, Jackson is averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1 steal over 30.7 minutes a night. He's shooting 47.5% overall and he's 35.9% from deep.

Jackson has seen his scoring drop from the past couple seasons. It doesn't help that he didn't have much help in Memphis around him.

Landale has started 25 of the 45 games he's appeared in this season. He is averaging 11.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.5 blocks over 23.6 minutes a night. He's shooting 51.4% overall and is 38% from deep.

Landale is enjoying a career season in what is his fifth NBA season. He's a nice backup option at center, but had been starting with so many other pieces out for Memphis.

Konchar has appeared in 30 games so far this season, starting just once. He's averaging 3.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1 steal and 0.4 blocks over 14.5 minutes, while shooting 52.1% overall and 33.3% from 3-point land.

Konchar is more of a depth rotation piece, but can be a nice secondary option if given enough playing time.

Williams has started 12 of the 34 games he's played in this season. He's averaging 8 points, 4.4 assists, 4 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks over 21.6 minutes, while shooting 35.2% overall and 30.8% from deep.

Williams has shown flashes of good play over his four-year career, so maybe a change of scenery can unlock his potential a bit more.

Clayton is in his rookie season, having come off the bench for all 45 games he's played in. He's averaging 6.8 points, 3.2 assists, 2 rebounds, 0.5 steals and 0.3 blocks over 18 minutes a night. Clayton is shooting 39.8% overall and he's 30.8% on his triples.

Clayton is just 22 years old, and he could be the point guard of the future in Memphis depending on what happens with Ja Morant.

Anderson has come off the bench for all 20 games he's played this season. He's averaging 7.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.5 blocks over 20.1 minutes, while shooting 52.3% overall and 60% from deep.

He's been a nice bench option over his career, but at 32 years old, he's on the back nine of his career, and just a depth option at this point.

Hendricks has only played 76 games over his three-year NBA career. He's gotten in 33 games (six starts) this season, averaging 4.9 points, 3 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.2 blocks over 14.9 minutes a night. Hendricks is shooting 45.3% overall and is 34.3% from deep.

Hendricks is still only 22 years old, so maybe the change of scenery can finally help him start living up to his potential/hype.

Niang has yet to play this season and is out now with a foot injury. The 32-year-old is another guy who has been a decent bench option over his nine-year career, but he's not that big of a threat nowadays, especially because he hasn't played all year, and has bounced around a ton over the past couple years.

Utah Outlook

I like the core Utah has built after the addition of Jackson. He should start at center, with Lauri Markkanen at power forward, Ace Bailey at small forward, Cody Williams at shooting guard and Keyonte George at point guard when the team is fully healthy. Don't forget about Walker Kessler down the road - he's out for the rest of this season though with an injury.

This trade is a nice fantasy boost for Jackson, who now has some better players around him. He doesn't need to be the go-to guy, and that's when Jackson could really deliver some good numbers.

Landale will be an option to back up Jackson, but Jusuf Nurkic is another option at center, so this trade could end up hurting Landale's fantasy outlook a bit.

Vince Williams is an option at the guard spots, with his best chance at significant minutes coming at the 2, where Cody Williams is slotted in. Isaiah Collier is another point guard option, while Svi Mykhailiuk is an option at the 2 or 3. I don't love the move for Vince Williams, but maybe things will open up for him a bit, so keep an eye on his role moving forward.

Bailey is a young and emerging forward. Brice Sensabaugh and Cody Williams are also options at SF, as is Vince Williams. There should be some playing time available for the Williams duo, Collier, Sensabaugh and Mykhailiuk, but one could be cut from the rotation as well.

Markkanen has the power forward spot locked down. Kyle Filipowski is his top backup option. Jackson could also play there some, which would open minutes for Nurkic or Landale.

Depending on their opponent or players available, Utah could now play bigger across the starting lineup, or go with a bit more small ball lineup.

The big thing for the Jazz is that they are a deep team after the trade. The guys I mentioned already will do a lot of the heavy lifting.

That leaves Konchar probably on the outside of things looking in. The guard/forward could be aided by injuries, or other roster moves.

This is a positive trade for the Jazz in my eyes. I think they could come out ahead in this deal, but it really will be determined by what Memphis does with those first-round picks.

Memphis Outlook

Trading Jackson away leaves a big void in Memphis, which appears to be moving toward a rebuild, or retool at least.

Morant, Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke are all out of the picture right now, and we might never see this version of the Grizzlies if Morant is traded away before the deadline.

Morant is the best player on the team for now, but with him out, Ty Jerome and Cedric Coward should hold down the two starting guard spots. Jaylen Wells is the small forward, with Hendricks at power forward and Santi Aldama at the center spot.

Clayton is a secondary guard option. He has Scotty Pippen Jr., Cam Spencer and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to contend with for playing time, so I don't like that for Clayton. Hopefully he gets ample playing time as the team looks to develop him.

Another trade could help Clayton out, but if Morant is held, I think Clayton will have a tough road to playing time.

Caldwell-Pope, GG Jackson II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper are some other options at small forward. Anderson is a forward option as well, joining the same mix of guys, plus Aldama, for time at the power forward slot.

Center is wide open after Jaren Jackson was dealt away. It leaves time and opportunity out there for Hendricks, Niang and Edey and Clarke when they return.

Unlike things in Utah, which are pretty easy to predict, things are more open in Memphis after the trade. So I'll be watching the game logs and waiver wire list closely to see who is maybe worth adding, or who is droppable after the roster shakeup.
