Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda talked about his injury, rehab and future with the Yankees.
Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery in Cincinnati on Tuesday after having his right ulnar collateral ligament examined by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek.
Spin: After looking at Pineda's elbow on Monday, Kremchek agreed with Yankees head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, who initially recommended the pitcher undergo Tommy John surgery. The surgery is scheduled to be performed by Kremchek. Pineda, who missed all of 2012 while rehabbing from a right shoulder tear, is expected to miss the remainder of the '17 season with a flexor muscle strain and a partial tear of his right UCL. "It's pretty devastating," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said on Friday. "It was devastating for him. He understands what it's like to work back from a serious injury, and now he's got to do it again." Pineda was 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 96 1/3 innings across 17 starts for the Yankees this season.
